#1 - Type of 5G Antenna

When you need to choose a 5G antenna for your 5G router, you can find several different types on the market, and it is important to know what each type can offer, so you can better choose which one suits your needs.

First, you have the option of getting a directional antenna that receives the signal from the 5G network from a specific direction and improves the signal from there.

The advantage of a directional antenna is that they often have a longer range than other antennas, allowing you to catch the signal from the nearby network antenna more easily.

However, it's important that you check precisely where your nearest 5G network antenna is located so you can aim your antenna in that direction, ensuring you capture the signal from the nearest antenna.

This way, you are better secured to obtain a much better signal, and thereby get a better and faster internet connection from your 5G network.

The second type of antenna you can get is an omnidirectional antenna, which can capture the 5G signal in a 360° radius, so you can be sure to pick up a signal no matter where you set up the antenna.

This can be very useful if you are not sure where your nearest 5G antenna is, or if it is not practical to have a directional antenna set up in the correct direction.

The downside of using an omnidirectional antenna is that they often do not have the same range as a directional antenna, so the signal may potentially be weaker.

In that case, a signal amplification of +6 dBm will be about a quadrupling of the signal's strength, so if you have a signal strength of -80 dBm, it will rise to -74 dBm, a significant improvement.

In the same way, a signal amplification of 15 dBm would be more than a 30x increase in the signal's strength, moving from -80 dBm to -65 dBm.

Therefore, it may be a good idea to try to measure the signal strength at home on the router, so you can see where it is before you purchase a 5G antenna.

#3 - Connector for the 5G Antenna

Another important consideration you should make is whether the connector from your 5G antenna fits your router, so they can connect to each other.

If your router has a different connector than the 5G antenna, it will be difficult to connect them, as you will either need a special adapter for the connector, or it may just not be possible.

Most 5G antennas use one or more SMA connectors, so if you want to ensure that your router can connect to the antenna, it's a good idea to check if your router has an SMA connector.
