How to use a bread machine

If you want to use a timer function, which makes the bread ready at the time you want, you should avoid regular yeast, as it works too early.

Instead, use dry yeast, but remember to add it last, so it is on top of the ingredients.

Here is a quick guide to typical use of a bread machine:

1. Open the machine and place the ingredients in the container.
2. The “wet” ingredients go in first, and the dry ones on top - place the yeast on top.
3. You can use both dry yeast and regular yeast, but it should be started quickly if you use regular yeast, whereas dry yeast can be used with the timer function.
4. Now set the bread machine to the right program.
5. See at the top of the machine where the different programs are indicated, typically with a number.
6. Select the number that corresponds to your recipe and your ingredients.
7. You can also set the size of, for example, your bread, typically on a button titled “loaf-size”.
8. You can also choose the type of crust your bread should have, either very light or dark.
9. If you are using dry yeast, you can choose to set a timer so that the bread is ready at a specific time.
10. If you do not select a timer, the machine will just start immediately.
11. Making bread typically takes anywhere from 3-4 hours from start to finish.
12. Some bread machines have a timer on the display, which tells you how long your bread is taking to be ready.
13. When the bread is finished, simply remove the pan from the machine, remember an oven mitt as it can be hot.
14. Turn the pan upside down on a cutting board, and give it a couple of light taps until the bread falls out of the pan.
