What is Chromecast?

A Chromecast is a small wireless media player that connects to the HDMI port on your TV, allowing you to stream movies and other content that you control directly from your smartphone. With a Google Chromecast, you can use all your apps that you already have installed on your phone, as you cast the content over to Chromecast and up to the big TV screen in the living room. It’s a fast way to turn your TV into a Smart TV, so you easily gain access to streaming services like Netflix, HBO Nordic, Viaplay, YouTube, DR TV, TV2 Play, and many more.

How do you use Chromecast?

Chromecast works completely wirelessly, as it needs to connect to your Wi-Fi network. Once Chromecast is set up, you control it via your iPhone or Android phone or from a tablet or Laptop. With Chromecast, your phone acts as a remote control, and you can “cast” content from apps on the phone to the TV screen without using battery on your phone. Physically, the Chromecast device is a small dongle that only measures 13.5 x 51.8 x 51.8 mm, available in 3 editions:

  • An HD edition (Chromecast 2)
  • A 4K Ultra HD edition (Chromecast Ultra 4K)
  • A pure audio edition (Chromecast Audio)

Chromecast comes in a box that contains the Chromecast HDMI dongle, a USB cable (used for power), and a USB power supply. If the screen has a USB port, you can power your Chromecast directly from there. Otherwise, use the included power supply.

  2. Go to Chromecast.com/setup on your phone and follow the instructions
  3. Connect to your Wi-Fi network on your Chromecast
  4. Press the Cast button in an app and stream content to your TV

It’s a quick and easy process, and you’ll be guided through the entire installation with an easy-to-understand menu directly on the screen.

Here you can see a more detailed guide to setting up Google Chromecast:

  1. Connect your Chromecast to one of the TV's HDMI ports and the USB power plug to a compatible USB power port on your TV or to a wall outlet, so your Chromecast gets power.
  2. Download the Google Home app from the Google Play Store.
  3. Log into Google Home.
  4. On the menu bar, select “devices,” here you can see your new Google Chromecast.
  5. Select “set up.” The Google Home app will now connect to your Chromecast.
  6. Once the two devices are paired, you will need to confirm a code that can be seen on the screen.
  7. Select a Wi-Fi network and connect your phone (it must be the same network the two devices are on).
  8. You are now ready to stream content from your phone. Tap the “Cast” icon when you play content and select your Chromecast.

Avoid expensive TV subscriptions

Once you’ve tried a Chromecast, it’s hard to imagine being without it. If you still have an expensive cable TV subscription with one of the major cable companies, you know they quickly cost more than 500,- kroner a month. You also need to buy or rent a special box, which is large and cumbersome to install. With a Chromecast, you can quickly get started streaming TV, and you only need to subscribe to the services (like Netflix) that you really want to watch. There are also no cumbersome cables that need to be run into the house to a large box that you have to find space for. A Chromecast takes up almost no space and is hidden in the HDMI port at the back of the TV. It doesn’t get easier or more elegant than that.

A world of movies and TV apps

Considering buying a Chromecast, but worried about whether there’s enough content compared to your cable TV, you don’t need to be worried. There are plenty of apps for your phone. Some of the most well-known apps are the many apps that can be used to stream movies and TV. Here are just a few:

  • Netflix
  • HBO Nordic
  • YouTube
  • Viaplay
  • DR TV
  • TV2 Play
  • TDC Play
  • YouSee
  • Stofa
  • C More

Plus many more like Dansk Filmskat, Google Play Film, Telia TV, Plex, Filmstriben, Daily Motion, and Vimeo. There are literally thousands of apps that support Chromecast. There are also plenty of foreign TV apps such as NRK TV, ZDF, and SVT.

Can I use Chromecast for music?

Chromecast is perfect for music streaming. On the audio side, there are plenty of music apps such as:

  • Spotify
  • Tidal
  • Google Play Music
  • SoundCloud
  • Deezer
  • YouSee Music
  • TDC Play
  • YouTube

Everything you can find on Chrome can be cast

You can actually cast everything you can find in the Chrome browser directly to the TV screen. This means that you can watch YouTube directly in the Chrome browser without needing to go into the YouTube app. If you have a Windows PC or Laptop with Chrome installed, you can add a “Casting” button to the Chrome browser, and then you can cast content from the browser directly to the TV screen. Finally, you can use the screen to show your own videos, photos, and slideshows from a photo app such as Google Photos or Google +. With Chromecast, you can turn your television into a picture frame. Customize your television screen with Google Photos, Facebook, news headlines, and much more.

How do I control Chromecast?

You simply use your phone as a remote control. Unlike many other media players, Chromecast does not have a dedicated user interface that you navigate with a remote. Instead, Google Chromecast uses the apps that are already on your phone or tablet to send video to the television. You can also stream from your Laptop if you use the Chrome browser.

How much battery does Chromecast use?

When you stream content, Chromecast takes over and streams video directly from the server, which means you get good and stable picture quality that does not drain the battery on your phone. Supported apps show a Cast button that you can press to connect to Chromecast. This works with both iOS and Android devices. This also means that you can use your phone for other tasks while you stream TV.

What is the difference between the different Chromecast models?

Chromecast comes in different variants. The first on the market was Chromecast 1 from 2013, which has since been replaced by Chromecast 2. Chromecast 2 has a new design and improved functionality, faster Wi-Fi, and a thinner design. The latest edition is Chromecast Ultra, which is the 4K Ultra HD version of Chromecast. It can stream content in 4K resolution (3840 x 2160). With Chromecast Ultra, you get clearer images, sharper colors, and smoother video playback when you stream content on a 4K television. Whether your television is 4K or HD, the content is automatically optimized, so you get the best possible picture quality. Chromecast Audio is a digital audio media player that can stream sound from mobile to speakers over a wireless network. Chromecast Audio connects to the AUX input in your speakers, giving you a high-quality audio player. Chromecast Audio supports lossless sound in high resolution, which is even better than CD quality. You can stream sound in up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

Do you need extra equipment?

A Chromecast does not require any extra equipment besides the phone, PC, or tablet you want to cast content from and a Wi-Fi network, so you can stream content. Be aware that your TV must have an HDMI input for you to cast to it. Most newer TVs usually have this. Chromecast requires very little power from either a USB port in the TV or from the included power supply. Finally, it might be worth mentioning that you need to subscribe to the services like Netflix, HBO Nordic, etc. to watch them. It goes without saying that without a subscription to these, there’s no content to cast to the TV aside from free services like YouTube or DR TV.

Chromecast is a smart little media player that connects to an HDMI port in your TV. With a Chromecast, you can wirelessly stream Netflix, HBO Nordic, Viaplay, YouTube, DR TV, TV2 Play, and much more to your TV via Wi-Fi. You control Chromecast from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Chromecast is also integrated into smart Android TV devices.
