All about DisplayPort cables and related equipment

Here you will find almost everything within DisplayPort cables and accessories. DisplayPorts can be used to connect your television with your computer, or maybe you need an adapter that can convert from DisplayPort to another type of connector, such as HDMI, VGA, and DVI.

DisplayPort connectors are quite similar to HDMI connectors, but unlike HDMI, which is found on many AV devices today, DisplayPort is primarily intended for computers.

The intention is for DisplayPort to gradually replace the DVI connector, which is still partly found on desktop and some laptops, as it is both smaller and can therefore be integrated into the new, slimmer laptops. Additionally, DisplayPort cables can also transmit both video and audio in the highest quality, which the DVI connector cannot handle.

At avXperten we carry almost everything within DisplayPort cables and accessories, and this also includes Mini DisplayPort!

DisplayPort

Under the DisplayPort category, you will find, among other things, DisplayPort adapters that can convert between Display Port to HDMI, DisplayPort to DVI, DisplayPort to VGA, DisplayPort to USB C, and DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort.

With a DisplayPort Extender, you can extend the distance between your DisplayPort and, for example, your television, so you do not need to get up every time you want to show something new or pause a video.
However, it is recommended that you use the shortest cable, as you may experience signal loss if the distance is more than 15 meters.

We also naturally carry standard DisplayPort cables in various lengths in both standard and professional quality, which you can also use to transmit 4K and 3D signals from, for example, your Macbook to your 3D television.

You can also get DisplayPort extension cables that can give you a better opportunity to connect your laptop to your television without having to get up to operate it.

If you need to display content from your computer or an information system on two screens or projectors simultaneously, you can use a DisplayPort splitter that can distribute the signal to two screens at once.

You can also purchase adapter cables that can connect a computer with DisplayPort to a screen with DVI connector, or a television with an HDMI input.

If you have an older projector, it may have a VGA port instead of HDMI or USB, and here you can also get an adapter cable that can connect the two devices to each other without problems.

It may also be necessary to have a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adapter if you have two devices with different types of connectors that need to communicate with each other.

Mini DisplayPort

Under the Mini DisplayPort category, you will find many of the same types of cables, adapters, and connectors as under DisplayPort, just for Mini DisplayPort instead.

You can find adapters, cables, Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort to DVI, Mini DisplayPort to HDMI and Mini DisplayPort to VGA, as well as Mini DisplayPort extension cables. All cables are available in different lengths, so you can surely find a cable that fits your needs.

Mini DisplayPort adapters can be used between Macbook and another device if the other device does not have Mini DisplayPort, such as an old screen with VGA or a television with HDMI input.

The Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable allows you to connect the two types of DisplayPort connectors together.

Mini DisplayPort to DVI allows you to use a standard screen together with, for example, a Macbook with Mini DisplayPort output.

Mini DisplayPort to VGA makes it possible to use an older screen with your Macbook.

Mini DisplayPort extenders give you the opportunity to place your computer on the coffee table while it is connected to your TV, allowing you to easily control what you want to watch on a large screen without having to get up all the time to start something new.

Under the DisplayPort category Splitters, you can also find a Mini DisplayPort splitter that can distribute the signal from your computer to multiple screens.

Thunderbolt

Under the Thunderbolt category, you will find Thunderbolt cables, which are an original Apple product. Thunderbolt cables have the same type of connector as Mini DisplayPort and can therefore be used with Mini DisplayPort connectors.

Thunderbolt cables are most useful with Apple products but can also be used to connect a Macbook to a television, either via a Mini DisplayPort connector if the television has one, or via an adapter from Mini DisplayPort to, for example, HDMI or VGA if it is an older television.

Like DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, and HDMI, Thunderbolt transmits high-quality video and audio, so there is no need for extra cables beyond the Thunderbolt cable.

DisplayPort is not HDMI – but what is the difference?

At first glance, it can be hard to see the big difference between DisplayPort and HDMI cables. Functionally, the two types of cables are actually very similar, and today both are referred to as fully digital standards.

While DVI can only carry analog signals, both DisplayPort and HDMI can indeed offer full digital high-speed connections for both video and audio. Both cable types also support copy protection and 3D images.

Although the two cable types, HDMI and DisplayPort, fundamentally look incredibly similar, there is still a difference between them. Essentially, they perform the same task, but the difference lies in the way they perform the task. They do so in different ways, which is related to their origin.

While HDMI comes from the world of televisions and DVD players, DisplayPort comes from the world of computers. Unlike HDMI, which is based on s-video and composite signals, DisplayPort cables use a more sophisticated and flexible method of data transfer.

The overall difference between the two cable types is therefore that HDMI is most geared towards AV equipment, while DisplayPort is most geared towards computers and data.

Advantages of DisplayPort cables over HDMI cables

Although DisplayPort and HDMI cables can virtually do the same thing, HDMI is often a more popular choice than DisplayPort.

DisplayPort is a completely new standard, which has resulted in the fact that it is still not possible to manufacture easy connection converters for DisplayPort in the same way that they exist for HDMI. However, there are still many advantages to using DisplayPort that are worth knowing about.

First of all, a DisplayPort cable has a greater bandwidth than HDMI. This means that a DP cable can transmit 17.28 GB/s compared to an HDMI cable that can transmit 10.2 GB/s.

This also means that DisplayPort cables can carry much more than just video and audio. DisplayPort can indeed, unlike HDMI, configure its bandwidth for multiple audio/video streams, giving greater freedom.

DisplayPort also has what one would call customizable data lanes, which HDMI does not have.

Furthermore, DisplayPort cables support multiple screens on one cable, which makes it the obvious choice over HDMI if you are interested in connecting two or more screens.

Secondly, DisplayPort has the advantage of being a royalty-free cable type. And what does that mean? It means that DisplayPort is free.

Indeed, a fee or royalty is charged per unit when it comes to HDMI. However, it is only 4 cents per unit, so that should not be the reason why one chooses DisplayPort over HDMI.

In addition to the above, DisplayPort cables also have fewer implementation rules and are less regulated than HDMI, giving manufacturers greater freedom to "play" with DisplayPort.

What can DisplayPort cables be used for?

A DP cable can be used for many different purposes. Just like with HDMI, a DisplayPort cable is used to transmit both video and audio when connecting devices.

Due to its origin, DisplayPort cables are, however, most often used in connection with computers, for example to connect a computer with a screen, but the cables can also be used in other contexts.

For example, they can be advantageous to use in a home cinema where you want an even better quality than what HDMI can offer.

DisplayPort cables come in variants that support, among other things, 4K2K Ultra HD resolution or 5K Ultra HD, which can be quite advantageous if you own a screen that supports the high resolutions.

In our range here at avXperten, you will find several different DisplayPort cables with varying max resolution and with different lengths, so you can choose according to your needs.
