DVI to HDMI Adapter - connect screens and computers

On this page, you will find our selection of DVI to HDMI adapters, which can be used to connect a DVI input or output with an HDMI input or output.

This means that if you have a computer that only has a DVI port for connecting an extra screen, but the screen has an HDMI port, you can convert the port using a DVI to HDMI adapter or a DVI to HDMI adapter cable.

DVI ports and cables often do not support audio transfer, but only image or video, however, images are transmitted in incredibly high quality.

There are several different types of DVI to HDMI adapters and adapter cables, so it can seem overwhelming to find the right one for your needs.

If you are unsure about what to look for when choosing an adapter, you can read below, where we have gathered some points to pay attention to.

3 things you should know before buying a DVI to HDMI Adapter

Below we have gathered some things that you might find helpful to be aware of when finding the right DVI to HDMI adapter or adapter cable for your needs, as there are indeed many models to choose from.

#1 - DVI to HDMI Adapter or cable?

When you look for a DVI to HDMI adapter, it can be found both as an adapter without a cable and as an adapter consisting of a cable with an HDMI connector at one end and a DVI connector at the other.

If the screen you want to connect to your computer already has a cable that fits the screen, you can find a DVI to HDMI adapter without a cable, which simply plugs into the DVI port on the computer and can receive the HDMI plug from the screen, or vice versa.

The advantage of an adapter without a cable is that you don’t have a long cable hanging if you already have a perfectly good HDMI or DVI cable, and adapters without cables are often cheaper than those with cables.

A DVI to HDMI adapter with a cable can be the solution if, for example, you have lost the cable for the screen you wish to connect to the computer.

Here you can find adapter cables in different lengths that have different connectors at each end of the cable.

Cables can often be found in the following lengths:

  • 1 m.
  • 1.5 m.
  • 2 m.
  • 3 m.
  • 5 m.
  • 10 m.

#2 - Connector types on DVI to HDMI Adapter

When talking about connector types on a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable, it is the gender of the connector that is mentioned, as it is almost given that we are talking about DVI and HDMI connectors.

What you should pay attention to regarding the connector type is whether the connector has the correct gender, regarding both the HDMI and DVI parts.

If the connector is to be used to connect to a device, it is often a male connector, and if the connector is to receive another connector, it will often be a female connector.

On an adapter, there is often a male connector at one end and a female connector at the other; the male connector is used here to connect to, for example, the computer's female connector, and the female connector on the adapter is used to receive the male connector from the other device, in this case, the screen.

You can find DVI to HDMI adapters with different connector combinations:

  • HDMI male / DVI-D male
  • HDMI male / DVI-D female
  • HDMI female / DVI-D female
  • HDMI female / DVI-D male

#3 - Length of DVI to HDMI adapter cable

If you need a DVI to HDMI adapter with a cable, it can be beneficial to consider how long a cable you need.

As a starting point, it is recommended to choose a cable that is as short as possible without it being too tight.

This is because it is desired that the signal running through the cable should not be transported further than absolutely necessary, as a very long cable has relatively higher resistance than a short cable.

This can be compared to talking to a neighbor, and the farther away the neighbor is, the louder you have to speak for him to hear you clearly.

In the same way, you risk the signal through the cable degrading as the cable length increases.

For the same reason, it is recommended to invest in a DVI to HDMI adapter cable of good quality, especially if you require a long cable.

Besides the cable length, it can be advantageous to keep an eye on the direction of the signal, i.e., whether it is DVI to HDMI or HDMI to DVI; on this page, it is primarily DVI to HDMI, and therefore also this direction the signal can run.

Some cables can be used in both directions, and here it does not matter so much if you need to reverse the cable.

To find the length of the cable you need, you can measure the distance from, for example, the computer to the screen, and at the same time consider if the cable needs to be run through cable organizers or down the wall, and therefore should be a little longer.

If you arrive at a measurement of 2.5 meters, and you can only find cables in lengths of 2 and 3 meters, you should of course choose 3 meters, as otherwise you will end up short of cable.
