Electric Car Charging Cables - Find the Right Cable for Your Electric Vehicle!
Right here, you'll discover our selection of charging cables for electric cars.
We offer charging cables in both mode 2 and mode 3, as well as type 1 and type 2 options.
Whether you're looking for a cable for a charging station or a standard socket, you'll find the cable types you need right here.
Always ensure that you purchase the correct charging cable for your electric vehicle by checking your car's plug type, and consider reading the manual to make sure you’re getting the right one.
Charging cables for electric vehicles are essential; without one, you won't be able to use your car once the battery is depleted.
No matter the brand of your electric vehicle, our charging cables are compatible with a broad range of makes, including popular automotive brands such as:
- Audi
- BMW
- Chevrolet
- Citröen
- Fiat
- Ford
- Honda
- Hyundai
- Jaguar
- Mercedes-Benz
- Nissan
- Opel
- Peugeot
- Porsche
- Tesla
- Smart
- Volkswagen
Charging cables for electric cars are generally universal, meaning that as long as the plug type and mode are compatible, they will work with your vehicle regardless of the brand.
If you're unsure what mode 2 or mode 3 and type 1 or type 2 mean, keep reading here for a quick explanation of these specifications.
Mode 2 Charging Cable
There are different “modes” of charging cables which can mainly be categorized into mode 2 and mode 3.
Let's start with mode 2, which can be essential for some electric car owners.
A mode 2 charging cable allows you to charge your electric vehicle using a standard power socket.
This means you are not required to install a charging station at home, and you can charge your electric car at any regular power outlet.
However, there is a downside to this otherwise convenient charging method, namely the speed.
Mode 2 cables have a maximum output of 3.6kW, which is comparable to the slower mode 3 cables.
Additionally, the amperage level is also lower, ranging from 10-16A, while the lowest mode 3 cable delivers a consistent 16A.
If you want the ability to charge your electric vehicle almost anywhere, mode 2 is a fantastic option, especially given that public charging stations are not yet widespread.
Mode 3 Charging Cable
A mode 3 charging cable requires that one end be connected to a charging station specifically designed for electric vehicle charging and cannot be plugged into regular sockets.
These charging stations can be found around the country and can also be installed at home.
Charging stations are undoubtedly the best way to charge your electric car, as they are significantly faster than standard sockets.
With a charging station, you will be less confined to your garage compared to using mode 2 cables.
More and more charging stations are being established around the world, including in the UK, which is making it increasingly easier to charge your electric vehicle on the go.
You might also consider purchasing an extra mode 2 cable to keep in your car, ensuring you can charge your electric vehicle no matter where you are.
Mode 2 or 3? Which Should You Choose?
Electric vehicles are still evolving, and more and more are appearing globally and in the UK every day.
This also means more public charging stations are emerging, making it easier to charge your electric vehicle.
On another note, the batteries in electric cars are becoming more advanced, allowing them to cover significantly more miles than before.
This means there's less need for frequent charging if you have a newer model.
When choosing a cable type, it's important to consider where and how you use your electric vehicle.
If you often stay at home and visit family in the countryside for extended periods, having a mode 2 charging cable that can plug into a regular socket might be advantageous.
For charging in your own home, however, a mode 3 cable will definitely be the better option, as it can charge your car significantly faster.
Here’s a look at the efficiency difference between the various cable types (mode 2 and mode 3):
| Function | Mode 2 Charging Cable | Mode 3 Charging Cable |
| Plug Type | Socket, Type 1, Type 2 | Type 1 & Type 2 |
| Charging Power (kW) | 3.6 | 3.6-22 kW |
| Rated Current (Amps) | 10-16 A | 16-32 A |
In addition to these factors, you should also check whether the cable is single phase or three phase.
Three-phase is relevant as it's the type of plug that provides the fastest and most powerful charging.
This type of plug is commonly the large red industrial plugs seen particularly in workplaces, but they can also be installed at home.
It’s definitely a three-phase plug that you should have installed in your garage if you want to efficiently charge your electric vehicle there.
Type 1 and Type 2 Charging Cables - Choose the Right One!
When it comes to charging cables for electric cars, you'll typically hear about different plug types.
These types are called type 1 and type 2, but it’s important to know which type fits your electric vehicle, as otherwise the charging cable may not be functional.
As a rule of thumb, remember:
- Type 1 cables are primarily for Asian brands.
- Type 2 cables are primarily for European brands.
Type 1 Electric Car Charging Cable
The type 1 plug is designed with 5 pins and is primarily used for electric cars from Asia and to a lesser extent Europe.
This plug type may be required if you own an electric vehicle from an Asian manufacturer, but it can be challenging to find public charging stations with this plug type in Europe.
However, you can always charge electric vehicles with a type 1 plug at home, provided you purchase the correct charging cable for that type.
Asian car brands do not only use type 1, as they are often produced for the western market and can also use type 2.
Car brands that can use type 1 charging cables include:
- Honda
- Citröen
- Fiat
- Ford
- Kia
- Mitsubishi
- Nissan
- Opel
- Peugeot
- Renault
- Toyota
- Chevrolet
Type 2 Electric Car Charging Cable
The type 2 charging cable is typically what we see used in Europe when we charge our electric vehicles.
This plug type is designed with 7 pins, which is the standard for the European market.
It’s also this plug type that Tesla has developed their superchargers for, providing incredibly fast charging for Tesla cars.
Car brands that use type 2 charging cables include:
- Citröen
- Fiat
- Ford
- Honda
- Hyundai
- Jaguar
- Kia
- Land Rover
- Mercedes
- Mini Cooper
- Mitsubishi
- Nissan
- Opel
- Peugeot
- Porsche
- Renault
- Seat
- Skoda
- Smart
- Volvo
- Tesla
- Volkswagen
- Audi
- Chevrolet
- BMW
Both plug types now feature a smart “connector” function to ensure they don’t fall out of the socket at public charging stations.
Even if you have a vehicle requiring a type 1 plug, you can still charge at type 2 charging stations with modern adapters.
This is done by acquiring a charging cable that has both type 1 and type 2 plugs.
You simply plug the type 2 end into the public (or private) charging station, and then connect the opposite type 1 end to your electric vehicle.
You can also have a private charging station installed at home, where you can choose the correct type that fits your vehicle's make.
If you want to future-proof your charging needs, you should opt for a type 2 plug, as this is what major manufacturers are investing in for the future.
Type 2 is practically always the type used in the charging stations themselves, making it essential that one end of your charging cable is compatible with this plug type.
