Electric fireplaces - A smart way to heat your home

Here on the site, you will find our selection of electric fireplaces that fit into almost any home.

Electric fireplaces are a popular choice for home and office as they are more flexible in their setup compared to more common fireplaces and wood stoves that use wood.

There are also other advantages to electric fireplaces such as being more energy-efficient and also creating less mess.

Electric fireplaces operate differently from other types of fireplaces and wood stoves, as they are powered by electricity instead of gas, wood, coal, and similar.

However, this also means that the majority of electric fireplaces require to be plugged into a nearby socket to function; this also contributes to making electric fireplaces more user-friendly and easy to work with.

The popularity that electric fireplaces have gained over the years is due to their flexibility and ease of use, and there have also been several different variations on the market over the years.

Different variants that fit several different homes also mean that there is much more to consider when you are exploring which fireplace will suit you best.

5 things to consider when buying an electric fireplace

There are some things you should know about electric fireplaces before you consider whether to invest in one.

First and foremost, electric fireplaces run on electricity, and only electricity, which means that the majority of all fireplaces require a main power supply to operate efficiently.

Another important point is that the flames in your fireplace are not real, but instead generated by reflecting light against the front of the fireplace using rotating mirrors.

Other modern fireplaces typically use LED lights to create the flames, but older models may still use halogen bulbs, which need to be replaced every three or four years.

Although the flames are fake, electric fireplaces will typically have a built-in heater that provides supplementary warmth to accompany the flame effects.

Typically, the heater will be a fan heater, but in some more expensive models, you may experience that it is infrared heaters instead.

Infrared heaters in electric fireplaces can often heat larger areas than fan heaters, and are often also quieter than fan heaters.

A major advantage of electric fireplaces is that they require less cleaning and maintenance compared to other fireplaces and wood stoves, and they do not produce any byproducts, meaning you do not need chimneys or similar.

Since the flames are fake, you can also often touch the fireplace itself, as the fireplace is not warm, but rather the area around it.

#1 - The fireplace's power source

An electric fireplace is an electronic device, and therefore typically requires a power source to function.

Typically, however, the fireplaces come with a power cord and a plug that you can easily and simply connect to the typical Schuko sockets you can find in your home.

However, it is important to remember that you should not connect your electric fireplace to power via an extension cord, but only directly to a socket.

This is because electric fireplaces are very delicate, and you risk that, by not having a direct connection to the power source, both the power system and the fireplace can be damaged.

The fireplaces typically work as soon as they are plugged in, and you can therefore connect them to your regular socket as soon as you get home.

Some variants of electric fireplaces are designed to be permanently installed in your home, such as some variants that need to be built into your wall, and thus also be permanently connected to your power system.

However, you can also find fireplaces that come with a plug kit as standard, allowing you to plug into the socket instead, thereby avoiding larger home installations.

#2 - The fireplace's flame effects

The flame effects are seen by many as the focal point of an electric fireplace, as they provide both appearance and atmosphere, similar to what a real wood stove or fireplace can give you; even if the flames are not real.

The flame effects in an electric fireplace are created by reflecting light from rotating mirrors, which gives the illusion of flickering flames.

The realism of the flames will vary between each brand and model of electric fireplaces, but typically you will be able to see a correlation between the realism of the flames and the price of the fireplace, and since the more realistic you want the flames to be, the larger your budget should be.

However, you can still find fireplaces with good flame effects at reasonable prices.

#3 - The fireplace's heater

Almost all electric fireplaces are capable of generating heat through a built-in heater.

There are typically two types of heaters in an electric fireplace:

  • Fan heaters
  • Infrared heaters

Fan heaters are typically what you encounter in electric fireplaces, as they work very similarly to a regular fan heater, where air is blown over a heating element, which then generates warm air in the room.

Infrared heaters are often better at heating a larger area compared to fan heaters, and can generally be found in more expensive models of electric fireplaces.

A good rule of thumb is that typically infrared heaters will be able to heat areas up to 90 m², whereas fan heaters can heat areas up to 35 m², but it is important to remember that this varies among different products, and therefore you are always recommended to check the product's heating capabilities.

#4 - The fireplace's maintenance

Since electric fireplaces run on electricity, this means that the flames are not real.

Many modern electric fireplaces use LED lights to create flame effects, but you may find that older models use lamps; many have found that LED lights are designed to last much longer than regular light bulbs, so you do not need to worry about replacing the bulbs.

This can happen if you buy an electric fireplace with bulbs, but apart from that, there is not much maintenance associated with electric fireplaces.

Compared to other types of fireplaces, such as those that burn wood, there is nothing to set up or clean; therefore, there are no byproducts such as smoke or gas to consider, and therefore there is also no chimney or flue to maintain.

Dust should be removed from the heat input and/or output when necessary, but otherwise, there is typically no other maintenance to remember.

#5 - Smart features for Electric Fireplace

Many types of electric fireplaces can be found with a multitude of different interesting features:

  • Thermostatic control
  • Remote control
  • Timer function
  • Flames that can change colors
  • Option to activate only the flames
  • Overheat protection
  • Control over flame speed and brightness

Thermostatic control gives you the ability to set the fireplace to your desired temperature, and with electric fireplaces, they can quickly heat the room to the desired temperature and then maintain it.

This way, you do not have to deal with adjusting the temperature all the time, but rather just lean back and enjoy the comfortable temperature in the room.

Many electric fireplaces offer remote control, which also allows you to adjust all the fireplace's smart features with a remote control while you sit comfortably on your sofa.

If you enjoy the atmosphere and mood that the flames can provide, but do not need to have the heater activated, for example in the summer, then fortunately there are many electric fireplaces that allow you to enjoy the flames without worrying about the heat.

Speaking of flames, you can find many fireplaces that offer you the ability to adjust the intensity and brightness of the flames, so you can get the most out of your fireplace.
