Vandalarm - Prevent Expensive Water Damage
Here on the page, you will find our selection of water alarms that can alert you to water leaks, allowing you to prevent costly water damage.
Water alarms are becoming increasingly common, even in private homes, because they can quickly notify you if the water level reaches a certain point, giving you the chance to save valuable heirlooms from water damage and to stop the leak.
Water alarms are also known for, among other things:
- Leak detection alarm
- Water leak alarm
- Water detector
- Leak indicator
The many different names indicate that there are many different models on the market, and the water alarms are available in almost as many price ranges.
Water alarms are available for several different purposes, for example:
- to notify you when the faucet is dripping too much
- to notify you when the toilet is running
- to notify you when water pipes are leaking
They are also available for installation in various places, where some are intended for floor installation, while others are meant for wall, pipe, or faucet installation.
If you are confused by the many models and variants, read on below, where we have compiled some useful knowledge that can help you in your search for the right water alarm for your needs.
6 Things You Should Know When Looking for a Water Alarm
If you want to be alerted to a leak or flooding in the basement so you can avoid a large water bill or damage to valuable possessions, then a water alarm might be something for you.
Here you will find some useful knowledge that can help you in your search for the right water alarm for your needs.
#1 - Type of Water Alarm
There are many types of water alarms, and some are more similar to each other than others, but they are all designed to notify you in one way or another when they detect a water spill.
Some water alarms are developed to alert you in case of flooding or water on the floor, such that a notification is given when the water reaches a certain point.
Other types are designed to detect leaks in pipes, either by measuring temperature and humidity in a room or through laser measurement of humidity between pipes and on the floor.
There are also types that connect to the water meter and can shut off the water if the consumption continues for more than 30 minutes, for example.
The most common ones, which many choose because the water alarm does not require a plumber's visit, are those that are simply placed on the floor and sound an alert when they detect water on the floor.
They are somewhat similar to the round smoke alarms that many have mounted on the ceiling, but they can also be square and easily placed under a shelf or behind a washing machine.
#2 - WiFi Water Alarm and/or Sound
When looking for a water alarm, among the many models and variants, there is both the possibility of WiFi water alarms and alarms with sound only.
A WiFi water alarm works somewhat like an alarm system or Smart Home electronics, and can therefore be operated with an app via your smartphone.
This means that you do not need to be home to hear the water alarm, but you will receive a message on your phone indicating that water has been detected on the floor, allowing you to react quickly and stop the damage.
Most water alarms still primarily function by sounding an alert when there is a water leak, but some can also have a SIM card installed or be connected to your alarm system, so you receive a call if the alarm goes off.
If you already have Smart Home control in your home, you can advantageously choose a water alarm, as it may be able to connect to your existing Smart Home system.
It is also nice to receive a message on your phone if you are on vacation and there is a water leak, so you can quickly contact a neighbor to shut off the water until you are home.
#3 - Sensitivity and Measurement Range
Water alarms have different sensitivities for when they should sound the alert; for example, a leak alarm has a higher sensitivity than a floor water alarm, but the floor alarm can have different measurement ranges.
For instance, a floor water alarm often measures down to 2 mm in water height, and as soon as this height is reached, it will sound an alert.
Some water meters have a slightly higher measurement height but also notify when the water height exceeds this.
A leak alarm will sound an alert when the humidity in the room reaches a certain level, which requires a greater sensitivity.
Therefore, it is advantageous to be particularly aware of either the measurement range or measurement height, as well as the sensitivity of a sensor-controlled leak alarm.
#4 - Where You Can Use a Water Alarm
You can use a water alarm in several places in the house, for example in the laundry room near the washing machine, dishwasher, behind the refrigerator, or in the basement to protect against flooding.
The water alarm can save you a lot of money in connection with a water leak or simply from water spills.
For example, a toilet that runs just a little bit all the time can cost you up to 275 liters of water a day, which amounts to nearly 7000 DKK a year, depending on water prices and drainage fees in your area.
A dripping faucet that drips slightly all the time can cost you up to 1500 DKK a year, depending on the price of water.
A significant water leak from a pipe or similar can run into several thousand kroner, and if the leak is not detected in time, you may risk having to renovate large parts of the room.
Therefore, you can, in principle, use the water alarm everywhere in the house where there are water installations, whether they are visible or hidden in the walls.
#5 - Volume of the Water Alarm
The volume of the water alarm's signal can vary from model to model, but is usually around 80-86 dB.
If you need to ensure that you can hear your water alarm, especially if it is located in the basement, it may be beneficial to choose a sound alarm with as loud a signal as possible.
You can also choose a water alarm that notifies you via an app on your phone, which reduces the chances that you may not hear the alarm a little bit less.
#6 - How Can You Otherwise Detect a Water Leak?
You can also investigate whether you have a water leak by simply turning off all faucets and keeping an eye on your water meter.
The water meter can often measure water consumption as low as 1 liter per hour, and if the meter is still running when all faucets are off, it may indicate that you have a water spill somewhere in the house.
In that case, it's time to go on a hunt, as a water spill or leak can be hidden many other places than a dripping faucet or a running toilet, for example:
- leaks in installations and connections
- leakage or frost-damaged outdoor faucet
- damaged pipes in floors or walls
- and much more.
