Handheld Vacuum Cleaner - a faithful companion for a clean home

Here on the site, you will find our large selection of smart handheld vacuum cleaners.

A handheld vacuum cleaner is a small device that, like a regular vacuum cleaner, can collect dirt from various surfaces.

A handheld vacuum cleaner is often a supplementary device to your regular vacuum cleaner, as it can be used more easily up high, as well as on various furniture where a regular vacuum cleaner can be a bit cumbersome to use.

A handheld vacuum cleaner is definitely not a replacement for a regular vacuum cleaner, as it is not easy to clean the floor with the device.

If you want a more dust-free home, a handheld vacuum cleaner is, however, a fantastic device that can be easily taken out and used without problems.

Handheld Vacuum Cleaner - not just for home

A handheld vacuum cleaner is very popular for the home, where it can easily handle dirt on the kitchen counter, in the furniture, or other areas where your regular vacuum cleaner cannot be used.

There are, however, many other places you can use a handheld vacuum cleaner.

Here are just a few examples of where you can use a handheld vacuum cleaner:

  • Handheld vacuum cleaner for car
  • Handheld vacuum cleaner for caravan
  • Handheld vacuum cleaner for boat
  • And many other areas

If you have an area that is very dusty, where a large regular vacuum cleaner is not handy, a handheld vacuum cleaner is absolutely essential.

9 things you should consider before buying a handheld vacuum cleaner

Before you choose a handheld vacuum cleaner, there are several things you should be aware of.

Not all handheld vacuum cleaners have the same features or the same power.

Below, you can read more about the different features and types of handheld vacuum cleaners, so you can more easily choose the right one for your needs.

#1 - Handheld vacuum cleaner with good suction power

A handheld vacuum cleaner is often used, despite its size, for very dusty areas.

This could be for very dusty furniture or carpets, where strong suction power is a clear advantage.

If you choose a powerful handheld vacuum cleaner, you will be able to clean your furniture and various dusty surfaces in your home more easily and quickly.

Suction power is often measured in pressure, which is stated in Pa - the higher, the more powerful it is.

Alternatively, you can typically also look at the wattage, as this is an indicator of how powerful the vacuum cleaner is.

#2 - Handheld vacuum cleaner with a stick (hybrid vacuum cleaner)

There are selected handheld vacuum cleaners that can actually also be used as a normal vacuum cleaner.

This is made possible by using an included stick, which can be attached to the handheld vacuum cleaner, transforming it into a “normal” vacuum cleaner.

This makes it possible to use a handheld vacuum cleaner exclusively, especially if you live in a smaller home.

However, be aware that both the battery and suction power are significantly worse than normal vacuum cleaners, and this model should therefore not be your primary choice if you live in larger homes.

#3 - Consider where your handheld vacuum cleaner will be used

Handheld vacuum cleaners can typically be used in your home, but selected models are actually also designed for other purposes.

In our selection, for example, you will find handheld vacuum cleaners designed for cleaning cars, as well as cleaning furniture and other special areas.

  • If you choose a handheld vacuum cleaner designed for a specific purpose, it will be significantly more effective in that area.
  • Many especially choose a handheld vacuum cleaner for the car, as it is much easier to use for cleaning the car than a regular vacuum cleaner.

You can easily get into all corners without having to struggle with a large robust vacuum cleaner.

#4 - Battery life & charging time

The biggest time saver when it comes to handheld vacuum cleaners lies in an efficient battery.

With a solid battery, you can expect a longer lifespan for the vacuum cleaner before it needs to be recharged.

Moreover, a good battery typically also charges faster, saving even more time.

This is a clear advantage for larger tasks, as a handheld vacuum cleaner usually does not have much battery life and typically cannot be used for much more than 20-30 minutes before it needs to be recharged.

However, you can also find handheld vacuum cleaners that can be directly connected to a power outlet so you can use them as long as you need.

#5 - Dustbin capacity

If you need to use your handheld vacuum cleaner, for example, in the garage where it can be incredibly dusty, it is an advantage to choose a vacuum cleaner with a large dustbin.

This ensures that you do not have to stop midway to empty the vacuum cleaner and can just continue until you are finished.

The size of the bin is typically measured in liters; you can see the individual vacuum cleaners' bin sizes by clicking on them at the top of this page.

#6 - Handheld vacuum cleaner for both wet and dry vacuuming

Many modern handheld vacuum cleaners allow for vacuuming of both normal dry dirt and, in fact, wet substances.

This means that you can actually vacuum up various spilled liquids without damaging the vacuum cleaner.

Handheld vacuum cleaners with this function often have a separate container for liquids, so you can easily empty it in the sink or trash can.

Remember that not all handheld vacuum cleaners have this function; models without this feature can actually be damaged if you try to vacuum up large amounts of liquid.

#7 - Noise level of your handheld vacuum cleaner

Like all other vacuum cleaners, a handheld vacuum cleaner also makes a significant amount of noise.

However, due to their size, you can actually find selected handheld vacuum cleaners that are slightly quieter than regular vacuum cleaners.

  • You can always check the noise level of your handheld vacuum cleaner by reading the description and looking for the “dB” or “decibel” number.
  • The higher the dB, the more noise your handheld vacuum cleaner makes, so if this is a problem, you should of course choose one with the lowest noise level.

#8 - Power consumption of your handheld vacuum cleaner

If you are particular about knowing your electricity consumption very closely, it may be worth knowing how much power your handheld vacuum cleaner uses.

To find this out, you just need to find the stated number of W, which is the power that the handheld vacuum cleaner has.

This number covers the unit's power consumption per hour.

For example, if you have a handheld vacuum cleaner with a power of 100W, this corresponds to 0.1 kWh when you divide by 1000.

kWh is the term most people are familiar with, as you pay a certain number of kr. per kWh from your electricity provider.

Additionally, you can just consider how often you use the handheld vacuum cleaner and calculate its operating cost.

For example, we can assume that you use the aforementioned handheld vacuum cleaner that uses 0.1 kWh per hour.

If you use your handheld vacuum cleaner for only 15 minutes a day, this corresponds to 0.025 kWh, multiplied by your electricity price, which amounts to just a few ore a day.

Handheld vacuum cleaners are units that do not use particularly much power, as they do not have the enormous suction power like larger vacuum cleaners, which can easily have power ratings of 700W or more.

#9 - Storage of your handheld vacuum cleaner

Depending on the size and type of handheld vacuum cleaner you choose, you may have different options for storage.

Handheld vacuum cleaners with a long handle can sometimes come with a corresponding charging station or holder that can be mounted on the wall or in a cabinet.

The easiest solution is simply to store the vacuum cleaner in a closet by itself.

If your handheld vacuum cleaner is one of those with the long suction head, you can choose to remove this and then store the vacuum cleaner.

The very small models can easily be hidden in a cabinet or drawer and do not take up much space.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Handheld Vacuum Cleaners

Handheld vacuum cleaners are ingenious for reaching all the tight spaces in the home, and are significantly easier just to take out and do a bit of cleaning without the heavy lug that a regular vacuum cleaner comes with.

Below you can see a number of advantages and disadvantages associated with using a handheld vacuum cleaner:

Advantages

Disadvantages

Extremely easy and light to move

Suitable for cleaning furniture

Suitable for cleaning window sills, moldings, etc.

No cord provides more flexibility

Easy to store

Can reach all corners, even up high

Less suction power than normal vacuum cleaners

Less storage for dust/dirt

Limited battery life

Requires more frequent internal cleaning

It is rarely a good solution to exclusively have a handheld vacuum cleaner, as they are actually not well-suited for cleaning the floor, unless you have one of the larger models with a corresponding suction head.

They do not hold a charge for very long, and are therefore most often used for the areas where your normal vacuum cleaner is not easy to use.

This applies, for example, to moldings, window sills, furniture, corners up by the ceiling, etc.

For these things, a handheld vacuum cleaner is much better than a normal one, and can easily reach those tight spots without any problems.

FAQ about Handheld Vacuum Cleaners

Can a handheld vacuum cleaner replace a regular vacuum cleaner?

A handheld vacuum cleaner can rarely replace a normal vacuum cleaner, but can instead handle all the areas a normal vacuum cleaner has difficulty with. For example, for cleaning furniture, or the window sill, a handheld vacuum cleaner is brilliant and can easily get into the tight corners where a normal vacuum cleaner would be too large.

Can you replace the battery in a handheld vacuum cleaner?

Modern handheld vacuum cleaners have a built-in rechargeable battery, but there can still be some models that use regular batteries. The rechargeable solution is primarily used today since it is more environmentally friendly and convenient for the user. You just need to connect the included charging cable when the handheld vacuum cleaner is low on power, and then it will be ready to go again quickly.

Why do handheld vacuum cleaners have so much less wattage than normal vacuum cleaners?

Normal vacuum cleaners today often have up to 1000 watts or more, as they need to have good suction power to pick up all the dirt from the floor. Due to the characteristics of handheld vacuum cleaners, they do not require anywhere near as much power. Therefore, handheld vacuum cleaners often only have between 30 and 100 watts, as their suction power does not need to be nearly as high, due to their primary use for small amounts of dirt and debris.
