10 Things You Should Look For When Choosing the Best Headphones
There is an enormous selection of headphones, which can make it incredibly difficult to choose the perfect pair for your specific needs.
Below we go through a long series of considerations you can make before buying headphones, so you can be assured of the absolute best pair for your needs.
#1 - In-ear, on-ear, or over-ear headphones
The first thing you should consider is the type of headphones you prefer.
- In-ear headphones are also called “Earbuds” and are a variation that sits directly inside your ear but takes up much less space. This type of headphones is often used for example during training or for talking on the phone, as they are small and practical to carry around.
- On-ear headphones are a variation that sits on the ear from the outside but does not cover the ear completely. This variation is typically chosen if you want to expose your ear as much as possible, as both in-ear and over-ear headphones can irritate some people’s ears.
- Over-ear headphones are one of the most widespread variations, and this type sits over the ear and completely encloses it. This provides fantastic sound quality and greatly ensures that no types of noise can enter from outside, so you get the best sound experience. This variation is especially used for gaming, where sound is incredibly important.
The choice depends a lot on your personal preferences, as well as what you actually want to use your headphones for.
#2 - Design, color, and comfort in your headphones
Headphones are of course designed to play the sound from your media, but it is still an advantage to be able to choose a design that suits you.
This is especially important if you have a setup in specific colors and want a headset in the same color.
As you can see at the top of this page, there are countless different designs, and it is up to you to find the right design that meets your personal requirements.
We have a long series of headphones here on the page, in beautiful designs, and countless colors such as:
- Blue
- Brown
- Black
- Silver
- Red
- Pink
- White
- Purple
- Yellow
- Green
- Gray
- Camouflage
- And many more
In addition, it is also important to find a pair of headphones that have the right fit and comfort, so you do not experience irritation at the ears while using them.
This can be difficult to investigate before you buy your headphones, but fortunately, they can be returned if they don’t fit properly.
An advantage here could be if you have a friend or acquaintance with the headphones you are considering buying.
You can in this way try them first, so you are sure they fit properly before you buy them online.
#3 - Active Noise Cancelling Headphones - a brilliant invention
Recently, there is a technology in a range of headphones called “ANC” or “Active Noise Cancelling”.
- This feature is made with the purpose of completely removing all unwanted noise around you, so you ONLY hear the sound from the media you are playing.
- ANC achieves this by constantly playing a sound that you do not perceive, but which actually creates noise that masks any noise and other sounds around you.
This ensures that you, for example, do not have to hear yourself typing on your keyboard, or perhaps your colleague talking on the phone next to you.
Thus, you can achieve complete concentration while you work, or let yourself be 100% absorbed by the song you are listening to, or the movie/series you are watching.
All our products indicate whether they have this feature or not, just remember to read the product description so you are completely sure before you make your purchase.
#4 - Wireless/Bluetooth headphones
Wires are rarely fun to deal with, and this applies especially to headphones and especially to earbuds.
We have all probably dealt with cable spaghetti in our pockets, with various wires from our earbuds, but fortunately, this is something you can choose to avoid today.
Wireless/Bluetooth technology has never been better, and today there are a long range of Bluetooth headphones that allow you to get rid of wires that twist together or break.
The only downside to wireless headphones is that you need to ensure they are charged, as they are not connected to your device and thus receive power from a rechargeable battery.
At avXperten, we also have many other sound devices with Bluetooth, such as a smart bluetooth speaker.
#5 - Headphones for music
If you want the absolute best sound experience for music, there are some things you should consider.
First of all, it is typically over-ear that are considered the best for music, as they cover the entire ear and thus you get the full effect from the sound.
That said, there are incredibly good on-ear and in-ear variations today, such as the mentioned AirPods, which actually have incredibly good sound, also for music.
You will, however, find that most enthusiasts almost always use over-ear, as they provide the ultimate experience.
Another thing you should be aware of is the frequency response in the headphones you choose.
Always look for as high a range as possible (typically 20 to 20,000 Hz, preferably higher).
The larger this frequency range is, the more specific sounds your headphones will be able to convey, and the better the sound quality.
#6 - Headphones for office
One area where many people use headphones is in the office.
When working, it can actually be very nice to listen to music or something else so you can better maintain your concentration.
This is especially true in workplaces where you have employees around you, who can disturb if they are for example making calls or anything else.
Here it is again a good idea to choose a pair of headphones with Noise Cancelling, so you block out as much sound as possible.
In addition, it is often an advantage to choose a headset, so you have both microphone and sound in the same device, especially if you often make calls to customers or similar.
#7 - Gaming headset
Gaming headsets can be said to be a must-have for people who game in their free time.
A headset designed for gaming focuses both on good sound quality, as well as good quality in the built-in microphone that usually comes with.
In addition, wireless gaming headsets have become incredibly popular, where it was previously preferred to have a wired headset, as the wireless technology was not completely reliable yet.
This has changed, and today many gamers actually prefer wireless gaming headsets, so they can avoid hassle with cables.
#8 - Headphones for children
If you have small children who have started listening to music, playing various computer games, or other things that involve digital sound, you should consider specific children’s headphones.
There are designed specific children’s headphones, focusing on protecting children’s ears so they do not risk hearing damage from a young age.
This is done by for example adding a limitation on how loud the headphones can produce sound, where the level typically does not go above 85 dB in children’s headsets.
You can also watch our short video below, where we explain more about why it is smart to equip your children with specific headphones made for children:
As a rule, you should just remember to avoid in-ear earbuds for children, as these send the sound directly into the ears.
Additionally, you should set limits on how long your children use their headsets, and give them good breaks so that their ears are not constantly exposed to high digital sound.
#9 - Headphones for phone
This is especially true for those who often talk on the phone on the go.
With smart Bluetooth/wireless headphones, you can easily connect to your phone and receive calls in this way.
This also ensures that you can actually leave your phone in your pocket or bag and just talk through the headphones, provided they also have a built-in microphone.
An example of earbuds that fit perfectly for this is the famous Apple AirPods, which meet all requirements when you need to talk effectively on the phone while on the go.

#10 - True Wireless Earbuds for running and training
Another place where Earbuds, such as the Apple Air Pods, are preferable is when you train or run, or perhaps just go for a walk.
Earbuds are indeed very small and typically sit well in the ear, which ensures that they do not fall out when you move.
This ensures that you can listen to music, podcasts, audiobooks, or anything else while you train, without worrying about whether they fall out and get damaged.

Additionally, it often looks a bit less intense to use earbuds in public, as headphones are, after all, a bit larger and more prominent in their design.
FAQ
What is the difference between headphones and headsets?
The two terms "headphones" and "headsets" cover exactly the same, and are more accurately also called "on-ear" or "over-ear" headphones. This type of device is often large and obvious, while earbuds/headphones are more "invisible" as they sit directly inside the ear.
Do headphones have a microphone?
Not all headphones have a microphone, but those that are suitable for gaming or office work often have a built-in microphone. There are also headphones without microphones as these are often designed especially for music or other situations where only sound is important.
Can wireless headphones be used for TV?
Wireless headphones can connect to televisions that have Bluetooth integrated. If the television does not have Bluetooth, you cannot wirelessly connect your headphones to your TV. However, you may be able to connect your headphones with wires even if your television does not have Bluetooth, though this means they won't be wireless, of course.
What is true wireless?
True wireless is a term that covers devices that can be 100% wireless. An example is Apple's AirPods, where everything can work wirelessly, both charging and the actual use of the earbuds. This means you completely avoid having to use wires when you use headphones like these.
Are earbuds good for training?
Earbuds are fantastic for training, as their size means they do not disturb you as much as a pair of headphones would. There are also earbuds that are specifically designed for training, which ensure that they do not fall out when you move.
