Insect lamps - Avoid annoying buzzing and insect bites

Here on this page, you will find our selection of insect lamps that ensure your summer evenings are free from mosquitoes, moths, flies, and other bothersome creatures.

Essentially, everyone can greatly benefit from an insect lamp in their house or open areas, such as on the terrace, in the barn, or similar.

Insect lamps typically use very little electricity and are also very practical; you also don't have to deal with any complicated installation.

Insect lamps are for those who:

  • Camp, hike, and other outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Live near a river, lake, or swamp.
  • Want to spend time outside in the backyard, on the terrace, etc., without having to deal with mosquitoes or insect bites.
  • Have certain insect allergies.
  • Prefer not to use solutions or chemicals to prevent insects.

Insects and other small creatures can be a significant frustration both indoors and outdoors, and sometimes insect lamps are simply easier and more effective than other methods.

4 things to consider when looking at insect lamps

There are essentially two different types of insect lamps; those that attract insects with light or insect lamps that eliminate insects using a blower or other wind-based technology.

The first type of insect lamp is typically the most common; these are the ones you see lighting up with purple, blue, or UV light, tricking insects into thinking the light means food.

This is because insects associate UV light with warm-blooded creatures and therefore fly towards it with the thought of getting an easy meal, but instead, they are met with electric coils.

Most insect lamps have built-in trays that catch the insects when they come into contact and fall, while others have a blower that sucks the dead insects into the tray.

You can also increase your insect lamp's effectiveness by adding to the system; for example, octanol is a very effective liquid to add, as it smells like human blood and sweat, thus attracting many mosquitoes.

On the other hand, insect lamps that use wind or blowers to trap insects often have suction-generating blowers; these blowers are designed to pull the insects around and down into a container.

The container will keep the insects trapped, so there is no chance for them to escape, and here they will eventually die and dry out.

Such systems often require very little maintenance, but they can be quite noisy.

#1 - Optimal placement of the insect lamp

Nearly every insect lamp has a coverage area, which is often measured in square meters.

Typically, most insect lamps will have a coverage area of about 50m², where they work optimally and efficiently; if your space is larger than this, it may be necessary for you to invest in multiple units to achieve maximum coverage.

Although it may be nicer or more practical for many to have lamps and similar placed in corners, you get much more out of having the insect lamp positioned in the center of your space.

If it is positioned against the wall, the effectiveness will typically be halved, and therefore you should consider where you want to place the lamp before purchasing it.

When you want to place your insect lamp, it is important that it cannot be seen from outside.

The majority of insects come in from outside, and therefore, it is crucial that your insect lamp does not attract even more insects inside.

You should therefore be aware that there are no doors, windows, or mirrors that can lure insects inside by reflecting the lamp.

The most common flight height for most insects lies between 1.5 - 2.5 meters, which should also be taken into account when hanging your lamp.

#2 - Design and construction of your insect lamp

The design and construction of your insect lamp play a significant role in its durability and effectiveness; this is also why insect lamps are often far more effective than electric fly swatters, as they are typically made from more robust materials to withstand almost all kinds of weather year-round.

The design and construction of your insect lamp should be top-notch, and therefore you should also ensure that your unit comes from a brand you can trust.

If you have children or pets, you should also make sure that the insect lamp you are considering is child- and pet-safe to avoid accidents at home.

The reason this is so incredibly important is that some insect lamps can exceed 2000 volts, which can cause significant harm to both animals and people if not used correctly.

It is also essential to pay attention to whether your insect lamp attracts several different types of insects and not just mosquitoes.

#3 - Indoor or outdoor insect lamp

Some insect lamps are made to fit only one type of environment, such as outdoor or indoor.

However, most manufacturers create insect lamps that are more versatile and can be used in several different types of environments, allowing you to use them indoors during the colder months when insects seek refuge inside, and outdoors in warmer months, so you can sit on the terrace in peace.

However, it is still important to check whether the lamp is suitable for the environment you intend to place it in; this can typically be seen on the box or packaging.

The only real difference between the two models is that indoor models are often not as powerful as outdoor models, while outdoor models typically do not have a tray that collects the dead insects.

You will often also need to clean the indoor models more than the outdoor ones, as they are equipped with trays or containers for the insects.

Therefore, it will often also be very helpful to have a tray or container that can be removed and washed, as well as brushes that can help clean the coil and grid.

#4 - What does an insect lamp cost in electricity?

If you are worried that an insect lamp uses a lot of electricity, there is fortunately good news, because even though it may seem that the light in an insect lamp uses an incredibly large amount of electricity, this is rarely the case.

Below you get an example of what it costs to run an insect lamp 24/7, using one of the most powerful models we have available.

The price for an 18W insect lamp can be calculated as follows:

  • 18W x 24 hours=432 Wh (Watt hours)=0.432 kWh
  • Electricity consumption is calculated in kWh, the price for 1 kWh is approximately 3.50 DKK on average
  • With an electricity price of 3.50 DKK, the cost for this lamp will be=3.50 x 0.432=1.512, or about 1.50 DKK per day

However, it is essential to keep updated on electricity prices, so you know exactly what you will need to pay to keep your insect lamp running.

It can, however, be incredibly cheap to have even a very effective insect lamp hanging, even if it is on 24 hours a day.

There are also insect lamps that only use 1W, making them incredibly cheap but, of course, also less effective than the more powerful insect lamps.

Always remember to check your own kWh price, as it can fluctuate depending on who your electricity provider is in your area.
