Jack adapters for splitting, joining or extending
Here on the page, you will find our complete selection of adapters for jacks.
Jack adapters are the devices that ensure you can always use your devices with jacks.
A jack is available in three versions
- standard
- mini
- micro
This means that you often may need to connect electronic equipment that has a different jack input than the jack you have.
In such a situation, an adapter is advantageous.
The adapter is a kind of converter, but it can not only change the size difference but also, for example, split the Jack signal or connect two jack cables.
Here on the page, you will find the following types of adapters:
- Jack - Jack
- Jack - Minijack
- Minijack - Microjack
- Minijack - Minijack
7 things you need to know before buying a Jack adapter
It is important to get the right adapter, so you don't have to wait longer than absolutely necessary to be able to join, split, or convert your jack.
Therefore, some things are gathered below that you may consider when searching for a Jack adapter.
#1 - Joining Jack plugs
If you need to join two jack cables, you can use a female/female or male/male adapter.
Here, you insert a male plug into both ends of the adapter, and now you have joined two jacks.
The advantage here is that you have the option to use an extra cable, with a jack on each end, to extend your jack.
This can be used if you do not have a specific extension adapter, which is a cable with female on one end and male on the other.
Be aware of which type of jack the adapter fits.
#2 - Splitting Jack
To split a Jack signal, a Y-splitter can be used.
A Y-splitter usually consists of either 2 female plugs and 1 male plug, or 2 male plugs and 1 female plug.
Y splitters can have different purposes, such as:
- combining 2 mono signals into 1 stereo signal
- allowing connection of 2 headsets to one audio output
- combining 1 microphone and 1 headset to 1 audio input
Y-splitters are particularly useful when two people, each with their own headset, want to listen to music from the same smartphone.
Here, you plug a male connector into the phone and each of the headset cables into the female end, and then both can hear the same music at the same time.
It can also be practical if you are holding a video meeting over the PC and only have a separate microphone and a headset.
In this case, you can combine sound from both the microphone and headset into one audio input on the computer.
#3 - Extending jack cable
If you need to extend your jack cable, you will need a male/female extender or a female/male extender.
Here, you simply insert the plug from the headset or similar into the socket of the extension cable and the other end of the extension cable into the audio output.
The advantage of the jack cable extender is that you do not lose much sound through the cable since there is only 1 connection.
At the same time, it is a flexible connection of the cables, and the cables fit well together.
Be aware that the sizes of the plugs fit together.
#4 - Converting Jack plugs
If you need to convert, for example, your minijack to a standard jack, this can be done by using a so-called female/male plug.
This can be used if you, for example, have a pair of headphones with a microjack that you need to connect to a PC; you simply insert the microjack into the adapter and the adapter into the PC.
The converter simply allows you to increase or decrease the circumference of your jack.
These adapters are available both with and without gold plating, and this plating ensures a stable connection between the male and female plugs.
You can also get adapters to switch a standard jack to a minijack or microjack.
#5 - Mono or Stereo?
If you are unsure whether the jack you are using is mono or stereo, you can take a look at the plug itself.
The black rings tell you whether the plug is mono, stereo, or stereo with built-in microphone.
Number of black rings | Mono or Stereo? |
1 | Mono |
2 | Stereo |
3 | Stereo and microphone |
There are very few jacks today that are mono, whether they are standard, mini, or micro.
Most plugs will have 2 rings or 3, thus delivering sound in stereo.
Now that you know what type of plug you have, you can search for products that fit this type of plug.
Be aware that you can use a stereo product with a mono plug; however, you will not get stereo from it, but functions such as conversion and extension can still be used.
If you have a microphone and thus 3 rings, be sure to get an adapter that supports the microphone, if you intend to use it.
#6 - Angled or straight?
Jack plugs come in many shapes and features.
You can get completely ordinary straight plugs, angled plugs, or plugs that are suitable for use on a plane.
The angled plugs are especially suitable for places where space is tight, for example, behind a speaker or behind a shelving unit, computer, or similar.
The angled plugs have a practical 90-degree angle on the adapter, which can also be used to connect a speaker or headset to your smartphone.
The straight plugs do not necessarily require an adapter to be used, but can sometimes be impractical due to their length.
If you are flying and want to listen to in-flight music or movies, you cannot just connect your own headphones to the plug.
Here, you will need a plane adapter, which you can buy on the plane, or you can plan ahead and save money by buying it in advance.
#7 - Gold plated or not?
When a plug is gold plated, it is said that the sound is better because there is a better and more stable connection between the male and female plugs.
Gold is an excellent electrical conductor, and since a jack plug, whether it is standard, mini, or micro, is an electrically conductive plug, gold is usually preferred over, for example, silver and copper.
Whether you need better sound than you can get from a silver plug is something you will have to assess, but it may be worth considering.
On this page, you will find both gold-plated and non-gold-plated adapters.
