The 4 different types of juicers
There are mainly 4 types of juicers:
- Centrifugal juicer
- Slow juicer
- Lemon squeezer
- Mechanical juice press
You can read more about the different types of juicers below.
#1 Centrifugal juicer
A centrifugal juicer extracts juice by typically partially grating vegetables and fruits like on a very fine grater, and then spinning it around to force out the juice.
Thus, it operates in the same way as a washing machine, which also quickly spins clothes to squeeze out water.
A centrifugal juicer essentially does a bit of the same, just with fruits and vegetables instead of clothes.
Centrifugal juicers are one of the fastest ways to make juice, and the larger models can often juice whole fruits at a time, with cores and all.
#2 Slow juicer
The slow juicer is considered to be the most effective way to get juice from fruits and vegetables.
It works in such a way that it mashes or crushes the fruits to squeeze the juice out of fruits and greens.
You may have heard many talk about the slow juicer because it is a very popular choice among the different juicers.
This is likely due in particular to the way the slow juicer makes juice, which is good at retaining many of the beneficial nutrients contained in the fruits and vegetables.
The nutrients also last longer in the juice under refrigeration, which is possible due to the slow extraction of the juice.
For as the name likely reveals, a slow juicer is a slightly slower way to make juice compared to a centrifugal juicer.
#3 Lemon squeezer
With a lemon squeezer, you cannot juice other citrus fruits and it cannot be used for vegetables and is not particularly effective with other fruits.
Lemon squeezers are available in both a simple manual version and in an electric version, where you do not have to press the citrus fruits around yourself to get juice out.
#4 Mechanical juice press
The mechanical juice press is most often used here at home in Denmark to press apple juice and is therefore best suited for people who have large quantities of fruit that need pressing.
They are particularly good for pressing many liters of fruit, and cannot overheat like many electric juicers would.
Therefore, it is probably not the juice press for you if you just want a glass of juice or two, but it is great for you who have a garden full of apples that you do not know what to do with.

7 things to consider before choosing a juicer
Before you choose your juicer, you might want to consider and be familiar with a few things.
Below you can see our suggestions on what you should be aware of and consider to find the perfect juicer for you.
#1 Capacity
There are two things you should be aware of in terms of capacity, as both the jug for the juice itself and the container for the pulp have a limited capacity.
The capacity is not that decisive, as you can also place regular jugs, bowls, and glasses under the juicer.
So if you were to fill the entire jug with juice, you can still continue, with a new juice container underneath.
The container for the pulp can also be emptied during use, so the maximum capacity is not critical for how much juice you can make.
#2 Size
There are juicers for both small and large kitchens, so especially if you have a small kitchen or have limited space for kitchen machines, you might want to consider how large a juicer you have space for.
#3 Speeds
With many of the cheaper juicers, you often do not have the option to change the speed, but only have the option to turn the machine on and off.
This means that these types of juicers have a preset speed that they always use.
If you go a bit up in price, you will be able to find juicers with several different speed settings, so you can choose the pace yourself.
#4 Material
Typically, you will find juicers where the body is either primarily made of metal or plastic.
If you choose a juicer in plastic that has a light color, you should expect that the juicer will discolor over time.
Especially if you choose it in white, you will quickly see that the plastic begins to take on color from the juice.
This is not something that affects function as such, but it can annoy some, as the juicer may end up looking dirty.
#5 Juice tube
The size of the juice tube (where you put your fruits and vegetables into the juicer) is crucial for how large pieces of fruit and vegetables you can put into the juicer at once.
If you choose a juicer with a small juice tube in the lid, you can expect that some fruits and vegetables will need to be cut into smaller pieces to pass through the tube.
On the other hand, if you choose one of the larger juicers with big juice tubes in the lid, you can often fit a whole apple or orange at a time.
This also makes it a bit quicker for you to make juice, as you do not have to remove things like cores and small seeds, since the juicer can easily handle these.
If you use fruits with large and harder pits, such as apricots or cherries, however, the stones must be removed.
#6 Spare parts and accessories
If you buy a juicer from a larger and more known brand, you will find it easier to buy spare parts for your juicer if a part gets damaged.
This can include when you need spare parts like blades/graters/screens, juice bowls, lids, plugs, juice press augers, or others.
It can also be in the form of extra accessories like jugs, cleaning brushes, or containers for fruit and vegetable waste.
#7 Design
When it comes to a juicer, design is of course not the most important thing, but it is still significant for some.
Many juicers look very similar and are typically made from white or black plastic, or brushed stainless steel.
However, you can also find juicers in colors, and some have fun and different designs, but you will typically see many standard models, so you might need to look a bit harder for them.
The difference between a slow juicer and a juicer
If you are choosing between a slow juicer and a centrifugal juicer, it might be a good idea to clarify what differences there actually are between them.
To start with, the two juicers extract juice in two different ways.
The slow juicer mashes fruits and vegetables in a kind of crushing motion, while the centrifugal juicer grates it and spins it to extract the juice.
When it comes to speed, the centrifugal juicer is the fastest method of the two, and you will therefore need a bit more patience with a slow juicer.
However, there are advantages to the slow juicer extracting juice so slowly, as it better preserves the nutrient content from fruits and vegetables during the process.
Cleaning the juicer
When it comes to cleaning a juicer, it is important that you are careful and have a bit of patience.
Of course, it is important that you are cautious when disassembling the juicer to clean it so that you do not cut yourself on the sharp blades of the juicer.
If your juicer has sharp blades/graters, these are often easiest to clean with a small dishbrush, which you often see comes with a juicer.
However, you should not use your regular dishbrush for this, and instead ensure that the juicer has its own brush, so you do not get unnecessary bacteria into the small grooves of the grater.
It is highly recommended to clean your juicer right away, as fruit and vegetable pulp can easily dry and set in the juicer.
