Lamps - Huge selection of lighting solutions for home and workplace

No private or public space can do without lamps.

Lamps obviously create light, which is important both for seeing in dark times of the day and for working and relaxing properly.

If you work a lot indoors, it might be nice to buy lamps that provide a pleasant light so that you don't strain your eyes while working.

We have a sea of different types of lamps here on the site, which we will go into detail about below.

We quickly go over the types of cheap lamps we have available, as well as which rooms in the home they are popularly used in.

11 Things You Should Consider Before Choosing Your Lamps

The selection might seem a bit overwhelming, and if you are unsure about which type of lamp you could actually benefit from the most, we try to help guide you below.

We inform you about the different types of lamps, as well as which rooms they fit best, and various specifications you can look for.

#1 - Lamps for Dining Table

For use over the dining table, especially pendant lamps are popular, as they create a focused and good light for the table's surface.

Pendant lamps hang down from the ceiling at a height that you can often adjust yourself, so you get just the right amount of light for you and your family, as well as any dinner guests.

You can also use table lamps, but they have the disadvantage of taking up space on the table, so you don't have as much room as if you use a lamp that hangs from the ceiling.

Ceiling lamps that sit very close to the ceiling can also be used, but unlike pendant lamps, they do not provide the same amount of focused light on the table.

If your dining table is against a wall, you can actually also use a wall lamp, but there is also the disadvantage that the light may not always cover the entire table perfectly, as can be done with a pendant lamp.

For these reasons, it can be said that pendant lamps are regarded as the best solution for the dining table.

#2 - Lamps for Bathroom

If you need lighting for the bathroom, there are especially 2 types of light that are very popular and effective.

If we are talking about light around the mirror, you can for instance find specific LED fixtures for mirrors, or use wall lamps that hang either above or on the sides of the mirror.

If you need well-distributed light for the whole bathroom, you can install an effective ceiling lamp.

Typically, many use both these solutions for the bathroom, as especially the mirror isn't very well lit if you only have a ceiling lamp.

Conversely, the entire room is also not perfectly lit, if you only have wall lamps around the mirror, and do not use a ceiling lamp.

#3 - Lamps for Kitchen

In the kitchen, there are a variety of solutions that you can use advantageously.

If there is talk of light over a dining table, especially pendant lamps are a solid solution, to provide good focused light for dinner.

Additionally, you can also get lamps and light for instance for lighting under cabinets, over a possible cooktop so you can better see what you are doing while cooking.

Ceiling lamps are also typically used as a pleasant diffused light in the entire kitchen, but do not create focused light for specific purposes like the other mentioned solutions.

#4 - Lamps for Hallway

For lighting in the hallway, there are especially a couple of solutions that are advantageous.

Many prefer to avoid wasting too much space on the floor, and therefore most use ceiling lamps or wall lamps for their hallway.

Both of these solutions take up no space on the floor, allowing for good room for other elements in the decor.

If you have a small table or similar in the hallway, you can also utilize a table lamp, if there is sufficient space.

#5 - Lamps for the Corridor

In narrow corridors, there is often relatively cramped, and not much floor space for lighting or other things.

Therefore, solutions such as ceiling lamps, and especially wall lamps are incredibly good, so that no space is wasted on the floor, which can make the corridor even narrower than it might already be.

Wall lamps in the corridor are also an easy way to combine lighting with some form of decoration for the corridor, as it is not always easy to find decor elements for the narrow corridors in the home.

#6 - Lamps for Living Room

The living room is one of the rooms in the home where you have a plethora of options when it comes to lighting.

Most types of lamps can in fact be used in one way or another in the living room, here are some examples:

  • Ceiling lamp. Ceiling lamps in the living room provide a covering and evenly spread light, which can largely cover the entire living room.
  • Floor lamp. If you need targeted light, for instance for the reading chair in the living room, a floor lamp is perfect for this. It can be adjusted as you wish, and direct light straight down to for example reading height, so you can read a good book in the evening hours.
  • Wall lamp. Over for instance a dresser, or similar, you can advantageously mount a wall lamp, which provides good focused light, either upwards or downwards. The wall lamp has the advantage of not using space on the floor or furniture.
  • Spots. A popular solution in recent times is to install spots in the living room, which is a stylish and sleek alternative to normal ceiling lamps. Spots can be built into the ceiling and be very hidden, but provides an incredibly good and covering light in the whole living room.
  • Pendant lamp. For the coffee table, you can advantageously make use of a pendant lamp, as long as it does not hang so low that you cannot see the television. Pendant lamps save space on the coffee table and provide a good focused light from above, which you can use during the dark hours of the day.
  • Table lamp. If you have small tables, dressers, or other stands around the living room that have space for a table lamp or two, this can provide good lighting in the entire living room. Table lamps can also be an alternative to floor lamps, if they can stand at a height that suits the sofa or the reading chair.

You should always consider your decor in the living room carefully, before you choose the lamps that might fit in, so you ensure they meet your needs.

#7 - Lamps for Bedroom

In the bedroom, especially table lamps in small sizes are good solutions.

However, you can also choose to make use of for instance a wall lamp or even a floor lamp if you want more space on the nightstand.

For the room itself, a normal ceiling lamp is a solid solution.

We also have solutions for lighting inside your wardrobe, should you wish this.

#8 - Lamps for Outdoor Use

If you need lighting outside, there are several solutions you can take advantage of.

For outdoor use, you can use lamps like:

  • Post lamp. A post lamp is especially smart for example in garden flowerbeds, or driveways. They can be placed along your flower beds or gravel in the driveway, and can be easily moved if desired.
  • Spots. Spots for outdoor use are typically seen for instance on the terrace where there is a cover from the house, which has the option to use spots as a light source. Just like in the living room, they provide a good and sharp light and draw no attention as they can be built in.
  • Wall lamp. Wall lamps along the wall around the property provide a perfect and easy solution for additional lighting in the evening hours, and can also be set up with potential light sensors to turn on/off automatically.
  • Solar lamp. A modern solution for outdoor lighting is smart solar lamps, which use the sun's rays to create their own energy, which they convert into light. These can be mounted outside, preferably where there are moderate amounts of sunlight, and are also available with their own built-in light sensors in some cases.

It’s important to point out that far from all types of lamps are designed for outdoor use.

Before you buy a lamp for this purpose, make sure it is actually approved for this, as it can easily break if you use it outdoors.

#9 - Color Temperature (Kelvin) in Lamps

When you look at lamps and light in general, you will often see a term called color temperature, or Kelvin, which is the unit of measurement for this.

This number shows how the light itself appears and what "color" it gives off.

It can be very relevant as there is a big difference in how one relaxes or is active depending on the light’s color temperature.

For instance, for the home, it is advantageous to have a relatively low color temperature, as you often want to relax and clear your head at home.

Conversely, for example at work or in the gym, there is a need for a slightly higher color temperature so you can better keep your focus and stay alert.

Color Temperature

2700K

3000K

5000K

Appearance

A warm white, sometimes a bit yellow color

A warm white color

Bright like daylight

Mood

Cozy light for relaxation (Primarily used in homes)

Warm and welcoming

Very illuminating, and "bright".

Most used in

Kitchen, living room, bedroom. Typically for floor/table lamps, pendant lamps or chandeliers.

Bathroom, hallway, outdoor lamps. Popularly used for skylights

The garage, basement, attic. Very powerful light, typically used for high-powered lamps for work use or safety.

Ultimately, the color temperature is a question of personal taste, but it is often an advantage for many people to choose low color temperatures for the home, while lamps with higher Kelvin are often reserved for places where one needs to stay focused and active.

#10 - Dimmable lamp or not?

Not all lamps have the ability to dim the light, and it is important that you actually look for this feature if you desire it.

In addition to the lamp itself needing to be able to dim the light, it also requires that you have a bulb in the lamp that can be dimmed.

Both of these things must be ensured before your purchase if you want to make use of smart dimmable light, which can be set precisely according to your needs.

#11 - The lamp's power consumption

The lamp's power consumption primarily depends on the type of bulb it uses, but also how efficient the lamp is at creating light.

The power consumption can be read on our various lamps by looking for wattage or “W”.

The amount of watts they use can quickly be converted to kWh by dividing by 1000, and thus you can find the price by multiplying this by the cost you pay per kWh from your electricity provider.

Remember to factor in how many hours you use the lamp each day; here’s an example:

I have a table lamp that is on for 4 hours a day, it uses 5 watts (with LED).

  • 5 watts x 4 hours = 20 W
  • 20 / 1000 = 0.02 kWh
  • 4 kr. (Example of kWh price) x 0.02 = 0.08 öre a day

That amounts to only 29.2 kr. a year, which is very low as it concerns a small LED table lamp.

The price quickly gets much higher, especially if you do not use LED bulbs, but still use the old halogen bulbs, as these use up to 10 times as much power as LED bulbs.
