LED provides effective light
Light is extremely important for us humans to feel comfortable. If we walk around in too much darkness, we risk becoming slightly depressed. Therefore, it is also important to have some good, powerful light at home or at work. It can enrich you with energy, especially in the dark winter months, artificial light is important.
And precisely a good, powerful light is something LED bulbs can deliver. However, providing good light is far from the only strength of LED bulbs. In the section below, we highlight several additional advantages of LED bulbs.
Advantages of LED bulbs
One of the major advantages of LED bulbs is that bulbs of this type are extremely energy-efficient. Compared to a regular energy-saving bulb, an LED bulb uses about 25% less electricity.
When it comes to expected lifespan, the LED bulb also delivers the goods. Such bulbs have an expected lifetime of between 10 and 25 years, while the average energy-saving bulb typically lasts between six and 10 years.
Moreover, the LED bulb also has the advantage that it turns on instantly. You have probably experienced bulbs that need to warm up before they really light up. That is not the case with LED bulbs. They shine brightly as soon as you turn on the switch.
Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that many LED bulbs are adjustable in terms of brightness, which can be really useful in many rooms.
Last but not least, a strength of LED bulbs is that they are durable, which means they can certainly be used outdoors. Thus, they also differ from energy-saving bulbs in this area. Energy-saving bulbs are quite sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which is why they typically break quite quickly when used outdoors.
Look for the Ra value when choosing LED bulbs
An LED bulb is unfortunately not just an LED bulb. If you become too price-conscious and buy the cheapest LED bulb you can find, you will likely get a rather poor bulb.
At avXperten, we focus on both price and quality. This means that our products are affordable, but never so much that we compromise on quality.
If you want to increase the chances that the LED bulb you buy is of some quality, you should keep an eye on the Ra value, which stands for color rendering. The higher the Ra value, the better light quality you get. An LED bulb should have a Ra value of at least 80.
Also look for color temperature and Lumen
In addition to the Ra value, it is wise to look for the conditions 'color temperature' and 'Lumen'. The color temperature is likely indicated as the Kelvin value. In Northern Europe, the standard has almost always been 2700 Kelvin, while in Southern Europe it has typically been around 3000 Kelvin.
If you want an LED bulb that delivers what you associate with a regular light, you should therefore buy a bulb with a color temperature of 2700 Kelvin.
The last condition you should be aware of is, as mentioned, Lumen. Lumen can be said to be the replacement for Watt.
If you are looking for an LED bulb that corresponds to 60 Watts, you should buy a bulb with about 800 Lumen. At avXperten, we try to specify both Watts and Lumen to help you as a consumer as much as possible.
No bulb types last longer than LED bulbs
LED bulbs are the bulbs that have the longest lifespan. Therefore, you shouldn’t worry about soon replacing bulbs or spots if you invest in LED bulbs for your home.
The bulbs that, traditionally, have the shortest lifespan are incandescent and halogen bulbs, which rarely last much longer than three years. An energy-saving bulb usually performs a little better with its average lifespan of between five and 10 years.
Fluorescent tubes have almost as long a lifespan as LED bulbs, but must see themselves beaten to the finish line. The lifespan of fluorescent tubes is usually 10-20, while LED bulbs' lifespan, as previously mentioned, is 10-25 years.
LED bulbs are always a good investment
The sooner you replace your current bulbs with LED bulbs, the greater service you are doing for yourself. LED bulbs are extremely energy-efficient, which means that in the long run, you will always save money by installing LED bulbs throughout your home.
How much potential savings there are depends on which bulbs you currently have. If you have incandescent and halogen bulbs, the savings will be extremely high. In that case, it won't be impossible to achieve a savings of up to 85%. You can combine the use of LED bulbs with other energy-saving solutions like a power-saving strip. This strip ensures that your devices do not use standby power, and together with switching to LED bulbs, it can result in significant savings on your overall electricity bill.
Are LED bulbs more expensive than other bulbs?
We have already mentioned the many advantages associated with LED bulbs. With that in mind, one might also imagine that LED bulbs are significantly more expensive than the alternatives.
LED bulbs are typically a little more expensive than other bulbs, but the extra cost is always quickly recouped due to the many different advantages that LED bulbs offer.
Especially the bulbs' energy efficiency means that economically it always pays to spend a little extra to get an LED bulb instead of another type of bulb.
Furthermore, the lifespan of LED bulbs is also quite long, so you avoid quite a few expenses for bulb replacements.
A concern you will undoubtedly have if you instead go for a cheaper solution and invest in incandescent and halogen bulbs.
That’s why LED bulbs are well-suited for all types of rooms
LED bulbs are perfect for lighting everything from bedrooms and living rooms to kitchens and office spaces, which is quite impressive, as the need for light typically varies from room to room.
The reason why LED bulbs are the perfect lighting source in all rooms is found in the flexibility of the LED bulb. Many LED bulbs allow the consumer to adjust the brightness. This way, one can easily find the light balance that is perfect for a given room. Note that not all LED bulbs have this valuable functionality.
LED bulbs for outdoor lighting
If you need quality bulbs for outdoor lighting, you should choose LED bulbs due to their durability. LED bulbs are by no means fragile and easily cope with temperature fluctuations, which many of the alternatives cannot do.
As previously mentioned, LED bulbs are extremely flexible, so you will have no trouble ensuring they provide the amount of light you desire.
The bulbs can thus be used to create a particular atmosphere. If you have a cozy garden with beautiful plants and such, a subdued light will likely be very beautiful, and LED bulbs can certainly provide that.
On the other hand, if you have an area that you want well-lit, LED bulbs can also easily handle this task for you.
How does an LED bulb work?
LED stands for 'Light Emitting Diode'. Like all other diodes, a light diode is a semiconductor. A semiconductor is a special material where one side is negatively charged, while the other is positively charged. In other words, one side has an excess of electrons, while the other side has holes for the extra electrons to fall into.
In a light diode, the semiconductor is mostly made of gallium arsenide. This special material releases particles called photons (light!) when the electrons fall into a hole.
When you apply current to a light diode, the electrons move and fall into the holes, resulting in light.
There are LED lights in all colors
Initially, most LED light was red, and there is a specific reason for that. To understand the reason, you need to know that the easier the electrons fall into the holes, the lower the frequency is.
Red light has the lowest frequency of all visible light, and thus it is the color that is easiest to create with LED light.
Today, manufacturers are very sharp and can easily create light in the desired color. Most people prefer white light, and how to create that type of LED light is almost a chapter in itself.
In reality, white light from an LED bulb is all the colors of the rainbow – just like sunlight. However, we humans do not perceive all the nuances but instead only see the sum of the mix, and this sum is therefore what we refer to as white light.
The history of LED
LED is, as such, not a new invention. The first LED lights can be traced back many years.
Research into LED light sources took off in the 1960s, which oddly enough was due to a device that few associate with light, namely a remote control.
The very first remote controls used sound signals with frequencies outside our hearing range. It worked quite well in many areas. For us humans at least. For pets, it was a different story. Dogs, for example, had no trouble hearing the sounds, and thus they were greatly disturbed and irritated by the noises.
Therefore, an alternative had to be found, and this goal spurred the development of LED light. Many of the subsequent remote controls were indeed with infrared diodes.
In the beginning, the light from the diodes was not visible to the human eye. Creating visible LED light has thus been something that has been worked on and refined since then, and today significant progress has been made. Therefore, a modern LED bulb can deliver a completely sublime visible light, which is crucial for this type of bulb being the best on the market.
