Micro HDMI - Easy data transfer from your mobile phone
Here on the page, you will find our selection of micro HDMI adapters and cables, ensuring an easy transfer of data from your mobile phone to, for example, a TV or a screen.
You probably know the regular HDMI connector from your TV, which has become the most commonly used connection method for transferring data, audio, and images.
The Micro HDMI connector looks very much like the regular HDMI connector but is significantly smaller than the standard HDMI Type A.
Micro HDMI is also known as HDMI Type D, and this type can do the same as the regular HDMI connector; it is just the smallest connector among HDMI types.
If you are unsure which micro HDMI cable or adapter to choose, read along below where we have gathered some useful knowledge that can help you find the right solution for your needs.
5 things you should know when looking for Micro HDMI
Like the regular HDMI connector, micro HDMI comes in many varieties and models, whether you are looking for a cable or an adapter.
Both resolution and price can influence which micro HDMI you should get, but also something as simple as the connector combination can matter, so we have compiled some information to help you find the right connector for your needs.
#1 - Here you can use a Micro HDMI
The Micro HDMI connector is often used in smartphones and cameras, or other devices where there is not enough space for one of the other HDMI types or sizes.
HDMI as a whole is a standard in most modern image and audio devices, including mobile phones, camcorders, and photographic equipment.
If you have a digital camcorder or a newer mobile phone, you may need a Micro HDMI connector, and this should not be confused with the slightly larger Mini HDMI connector, as mini HDMI will not fit into a micro HDMI connector.
When you need to get a micro HDMI connector, you will see that it is most often adapters and cables that have micro HDMI on one end and a regular HDMI connector on the other, because you will very rarely need to transfer from one device with micro HDMI to another device with micro HDMI.
Instead, you will often need to “empty” your camcorder of recordings of both images and video, and transfer these to either a computer or a screen, but here it will often be the regular HDMI connector that needs to be used.
#2 - Micro HDMI cable or adapter
When looking for a micro HDMI connector, you can get both cables and adapters that convert micro HDMI to regular HDMI, and in some cases also to USB.
If you are unsure whether to choose an adapter or a cable, you might want to check your drawers to see if you already have an HDMI cable lying around.
If you have an HDMI cable lying around, you can just buy an adapter for the micro HDMI connector, whereby the micro HDMI connector on the other end has an HDMI female connector where the cable can be plugged in and routed to a TV or another device.
Micro HDMI cables work on the same principle, but here you are not dependent on having an HDMI cable beforehand, and these cables can only be used for this purpose as they have a micro HDMI connector on one end and a regular HDMI on the other end.
When choosing a micro HDMI adapter or cable, the connector combination can be very important, and you should be aware that the correct connectors are respectively male and female connectors.
#3 - Micro HDMI resolution
The resolution in which you can transfer sound and image is important for the quality in which the image and sound are displayed on your TV.
The resolution is more important now than it has ever been before, and this is because there are now resolutions up to 8K, which is a significant leap from the standard full HD resolution.
Therefore, you should pay attention to which resolution you want your micro HDMI connector to support and at which Hertz.
If your camera or mobile phone only supports Full HD or 4K, there is no reason to choose an 8K cable or adapter, as this will not make any difference for the resolution.
If your camera, on the other hand, can record in 4K and you only have a full HD cable, you will not experience the benefits of 4K, as the cable can only transfer a full HD resolution.
Most HDMI connectors, including micro HDMI which has the same characteristics as HDMI-A, can transfer 4K resolution at 30 Hz, but you can also find connectors that can transmit, for example, 4K at 60 Hz or 120 Hz.
The resolutions are thus for the different classes:
- Full HD = 1920 x 1080 pixels
- 4K = 3840 x 2160 pixels
- 8K = 4096 x 2160 pixels
However, it is not enough for the cable to support the desired resolution, because if you choose a micro HDMI adapter, both the adapter and the cable, as well as the devices, must support the resolution.
#4 - Micro HDMI connector combinations
When choosing your micro HDMI cable or adapter, you should be careful to get a cable or an adapter with the correct connector combination.
Some adapters or connectors on cables are indeed female connectors, which means that you need to ensure that you have a male connector that fits into this.
You can find the following connector combinations:
- HDMI male / Micro HDMI male
- HDMI female / Micro HDMI male
- Micro HDMI female / HDMI male
- Micro HDMI male / USB male
Which connector combination you need to look for will depend on the connectors on the devices you need to connect.
#5 - Cable length for Micro HDMI
If you choose to invest in a Micro HDMI cable, you should consider how long the cable needs to be, as this can indeed be crucial for which type of cable you should choose.
If you choose a cable longer than 3 meters, it is recommended that you choose an active cable.
An active cable has less loss of resolution, as it is unidirectional, meaning that the signal can only travel in one direction, and here you should be aware that you will most often need the signal to run from micro HDMI to HDMI.
If you choose a cable shorter than 3 meters, you can easily use a passive cable, where the signal can travel both ways.
In general, it is best to choose the shortest cable possible to minimize any loss in resolution, and the longer cable you choose, the better quality you should also choose to minimize this loss.
