Philips

The Story of Philips

Philips is a Dutch company, whose full name is Royal Philips, which was started in 1891 in Eindhoven.

The company was founded by Gerard and Frederik Philips, and they started by producing carbon filament lamps and other electronic products.

In the early 1920s, the company also began producing vacuum tubes, and by the late 1920s, Philips launched a shortwave radio station, which was later expanded to broadcast in Indonesia, which was a Dutch colony, as well as in England, Germany, and Spain.

However, after the liberation, the radio station was bought and nationalized.

In the early 1930s, Philips introduced the first radio with a built-in speaker, and in the mid-1930s, the company decided to revive the Stirling engine, which was a small portable generator with low power because Philips believed it could affect the sales of radios in parts of the world where the power supply and the ability to obtain batteries were unstable.

At the end of the same decade, the company launched their first electric shaver called Philipshave, and it has remained part of the company's product range up to the present day.

After the war, in 1949, Philips began producing and selling televisions, a branch of the company that still exists today.

Philips also produces electronics for other brands, which they use inside their TVs.

In 1963, Philips introduced an invention that would prove to be a huge success, the cassette tape player.

The cassette tapes quickly gained popularity as a dictation medium for stenographers and professional journalists, but also for recording music, in line with vinyl records that record companies had used.

Later, Philips came out with a combined radio and cassette player, which meant that one could now record radio programs and listen to them later.

Cassette tapes were also developed in various sizes including mini, C-cassette, and micro cassette.

The many sizes meant that tapes could be used in everything from computers, most famously from the Commodore 64 cassette, answering machines, and much more.

In 1972, Philips introduced the world's first video tape player, and the first machine could record about 45 minutes of film, but this was quickly surpassed by competitors from VHS and Sony Betamax.

In 1977, Philips made a final attempt with video tapes that could record on both sides and store up to 8 hours of recordings, but Japanese manufacturers copied the idea and could produce it significantly cheaper, therefore leaving this branch of the company to VHS.

Philips partnered with Sony to release a new invention called the Compact Disc, which was launched in 1982.

The CD has since been further developed into both DVD and Blue-ray, as we know it today.

In 1984, Philips took over the leadership of Grundig with a third of the shares in the company, gaining new expertise, technologies, and knowledge.

That same year, Philips split the company and created a separate company, ASML, which produces and develops chips for integration into electronic devices.

Throughout the 2000s, Philips continuously developed their business, new products, and expanded their product range within consumer electronics.

However, Philips' focus areas in the 2010s shifted to concentrating more on medical technologies and the development of electronics for healthcare systems around the world.

Today, Philips still produces and develops consumer electronics on a large scale, but the focus remains on developing new technologies for diagnostic imaging, for example.

Examples of the selection from Philips

Philips is known by many for their various types of electronic products, and Philips is a recognized brand in everything from televisions to toothbrushes.

As an ordinary person, you probably know Philips best from the electronic products you can buy for the home, garden, car, and boat, but Philips also has a very large division in health technology.

For example, it is Philips that supplies many of the diagnostic imaging devices to the healthcare system, such as the CT scanner and MRI Scanner, or at least the electronics for them.

If you know Philips from products and machines for the home, you know that Philips has a very large selection, for example:

The above products are just a small part of Philips' large selection in consumer electronics, and there is also a large spare parts program for the products.

At the same time, you retain all the good vitamins, minerals, and flavors in your food.

Philips air fryers are known for their efficiency and quality, along with the many features and pre-programmed settings for different foods, while the air fryer is very easy to clean.
