Here on the site, you will find radios in modern and sleek designs within both classic and modern aesthetics.
There are radios in several categories such as:
5 things to consider when looking for a Radio
When searching for a radio, there are several things and features you can look for.
Below are some of these aspects that can make it easier for you to choose the right radio for your needs.
#1 - Signal type
When you are looking for a new radio, the first thing you should consider is the type of signal.
The signal types include:
- DAB/DAB+
- FM
- Internet/Streaming
The DAB signal is a clear and interference-free digital radio signal, first broadcasted in 1995. DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting.
The new standard within DAB is called DAB+, and in this newer version, the sound quality has been further improved.
DAB and DAB+ have the advantage that often there is a display on the radio that shows what you are listening to and often which song is playing.
You can listen to DAB channels 24 hours a day and search channels by interest, so if you, for instance, only want to hear pop music, there are channels that play nothing else.
The FM signal is probably the signal most people know, as it is the good old analog signal that has existed since around 1950.
On most FM radios, you cannot see on a display which music is playing, but if it is a newer model, you will often be able to see the channel's name once you've found the frequency.
FM is frequency-driven, which means that to find a radio channel, you will find it easiest by remembering the frequency number for your favorite channel.
Although the FM signal is still the most widespread in all of Europe, it is intended that the FM signal will be phased out once about 50% listen to the radio via the DAB signal.
According to the latest statistics, approximately 38% of Danes listened via the DAB signal, but it has not yet been determined when and how the FM signal will be phased out, so you can still consider a radio with the classic analog signal.
Internet/Streaming requires access to your WiFi network to retrieve one of the more than 20,000 radio stations available on the internet.
Connecting to WiFi may require some initial setup for the radio, and it may take some startup time, but once the radio has caught your WiFi, there are no limits to what you can listen to.
There is music, news, sports, and entertainment around the clock as you have access to internet radio stations all over the world.
Often you can program your favorite stations into the device so you can quickly find them again.
#2 - Design
If you want a radio that fits your decor style, there is plenty to choose from.
Radios, regardless of type, are available in both classic retro designs and completely new and modern designs, so aesthetically, there are very few limitations.
Another consideration regarding the design of your new radio is whether it will be used in a fixed location or if it is one you need to be able to take with you on a camping trip, bike ride, or other places you go.
You can also find portable radios; here, it is often the FM signal that is possible to pick up, but they are easy to carry as they don’t take up much space.
A portable radio, of course, doesn't have the huge speaker, as it would then take up too much space, but you still get fantastic sound on the go.
It could also be that your car needs a new radio, and here there are specific measurements for the size of the radio you need to pay attention to.
Car radios can be available with both DAB/DAB+ and FM, so here you can choose which signal you prefer.
#3 - WiFi, Bluetooth or Cable
If you would like to connect another device to your new radio, it is worth considering how this should be done.
Many radios have the option to connect, e.g., a pair of wired headphones via a jack or minijack cable, but if you have wireless headphones that you would like to use with your radio, you should consider the wireless options.
Many new radios, both DAB and FM radios, offer Bluetooth for connecting additional equipment, extra speakers, or for casting music from services like Spotify or similar.
If you choose an Internet radio, you won’t have any issues with connecting to WiFi, as this is essential for listening to music on this, but be sure that you get the Bluetooth feature as well.
The WiFi function means that if you have speakers in multiple rooms, you can often connect them together in a network, so you can choose whether you want to play music from your radio on all of the house’s speakers, on a couple of them, or just from one single one.
#4 - Mains or Batteries
If you need to use your radio in one of the rooms in your home, you may have no problems finding a power outlet for your new radio, but if it needs to be used in the shed or taken with you on trips, you might need to consider whether the radio should have power via mains, batteries, or possibly via solar cells.
Some radios have the option for all options, while others only have the option for either mains power or batteries, and others have the option to charge the battery via solar cells and require it to be a rechargeable radio.
#5 - Extra Features
Radios come with various extra features available.
This could, for example, be the option to insert a CD into the radio and play it or connect a turntable.
Some can even be available with a cassette player, a clock radio function, or other features that make the radio more versatile.
What you need to consider is that these extra features also take up more space and can limit you regarding the appearance of the radio.
But if you have a favorite CD that you would like to play or a LP, you can consider finding a radio that offers these extra features.
These extra features are often not offered when you are looking for a pocket radio or a portable radio.
In such cases, you can research whether it’s possible to connect a CD or LP player via a jack or minijack cable, or a USB cable.
