Vent hood filters for better suction power

Here on the page, you will find our selection of vent hood filters that can help provide better suction power when you replace an old filter with a new one.

The vent hood filter should be replaced regularly, both to maintain the suction capacity of the hood and to ensure that the risk of old grease dripping into your food or, in the worst case, causing a fire is minimized.

There are many types of vent hood filters, and some can be reused after cleaning, while others need to be replaced with a new one at regular intervals.

You may not think much about the filter in your vent hood until it starts making more noise than usual, cooking odors are not being exhausted, or when the stove starts having small grease spots around it.

When you suddenly experience some of these issues, it may be a sign that it’s time to change the vent hood filter, and not necessarily the whole hood.

But which vent hood filter should you get?

We attempt to assist you with some useful information on what to be aware of when looking for a new vent hood filter.

6 things you should know when looking for vent hood filters

There are many different vent hood filters, and it is rarely necessary to buy original filters.

Vent hood filters come in many shapes and types, and below you will receive some useful information that can help you on your way to finding the best filter for your hood.

#1 - Types of vent hood filters

There are several types of vent hood filters, and they are suitable for different types of hoods, so the first thing you need to find out when looking for a new vent hood filter is what type of vent hood you have.

The two most commonly used types of vent hoods are:

  • Extraction hood - here the air is vented outside
  • Recirculation hood - which captures cooking odors and grease and then recirculates the air back into the kitchen.

If you have an extraction hood, it is usually a metal or aluminum grease filter that you need, but it is not necessary to replace these hood filters very often as they can typically be washed, either by hand or in the dishwasher.

Note that not all metal filters can withstand the dishwasher, so it may be beneficial to check the hood's instruction manual for cleaning instructions.

However, there are some older models of this type of hood that may occasionally have a grease filter made of felt, and in such cases, this filter must be changed at regular intervals.

On the other hand, if you have a recirculation hood, there will often be both a grease filter and a charcoal filter, where the grease filter only removes grease from cooking odors, and the charcoal filter can effectively purify the air before it is recirculated back into your kitchen.

The grease filter is often made of metal, but it can also be a thin layer of felt, and the charcoal filter is often a thicker filter, which is usually black.

Charcoal filters and felt grease filters cannot be cleaned but should instead be replaced at regular intervals, as the hood’s function will otherwise deteriorate over time.

#2 - Size of vent hood filter

Vent hood filters can be found in many sizes and it is not a necessity that you choose filters from the same brand as the hood.

Most metal filters for vent hoods come in specific measurements without adjustment, and here you can optionally check the hood's instruction manual to see the size or measure it with a tape measure.

Filters in the form of felt or charcoal filters can often be purchased in larger sizes, which can then be cut down to fit your hood, and it can be advantageous to buy several at once, so you always have some in stock when it’s time to replace the vent hood filter.

Some charcoal filters are placed in a frame with specific measurements, and these cannot necessarily be adapted in size.

#3 - Universal vent hood filter or original?

Most vent hood manufacturers also produce filters for their own models, where you can often use a model number to find the right filter for your vent hood.

Typically, original filters cost a little more than universal vent hood filters, but the effect is the same, and the durability is often the same as well.

You can therefore definitely use universal vent hood filters in your hood without compromising the suction power or effectiveness.

Manufacturers of universal vent hood filters are often just as competent as the big brands in developing and producing these filters, so you won't be sacrificing quality.

It can be costly to have to replace your vent hood filters every couple of months, and therefore, there can also be some savings by choosing universal filters.

#4 - Round or square vent hood filter?

Vent hood filters can be found in both round and square shapes, including with cutouts or without, in frames or without frames.

There are many models and shapes, and the best thing you can do to determine which shape you need for your vent hood filter is to open the hood and see what shape of filter is currently installed.

You can of course also refer to the instruction manual to see what shape and type the hood filter should be.

#5 - How often should the vent hood filter be changed?

If you have a hood with a metal filter, this filter should be changed very rarely but kept clean instead.

On the other hand, if you have grease and charcoal filters in your vent hood, these should be replaced at regular intervals, for some models as often as every 3 months and others 1-2 times a year.

When the hood starts making more noise than normal or does not suction as it should, you can benefit from changing or cleaning the vent hood filter.

Some grease filters made from fiber materials, for example, can withstand being washed in the dishwasher, and if so, you will be able to see that on the filter packaging.

You just need to be careful not to wash them together with glass or porcelain.

#6 - Cleaning vent hood filter

It is important that you keep your vent hood clean, as otherwise, remnants of old grease can fall into your pots.

Depending on which filters your vent hood has, these should also be cleaned.

Metal and aluminum grease filters can often handle a trip in the dishwasher, and you can advantageously do this once every other month.

However, you should be aware that aluminum filters can be discolored by the dishwasher, but that doesn’t affect the function.

Some grease filters made from fiber materials or, for instance, polyester can also handle a trip in the dishwasher, as long as they are not washed together with porcelain and glass.

If the grease filter is very dirty, you might want to soak the filters in a good cleaning agent first.
