RJ45 Cover - protect the cable connection from damage

Here on the page you will find our selection of RJ45 covers that can protect the connection between the cable and the connector from damage.

An RJ45 connector is a small and often somewhat delicate connector, and the small locking mechanism often struggles to break off from the connector if, for example, it gets caught on a carpet or a piece of clothing.

If the locking mechanism breaks off, the RJ45 connector does not hold as securely in the socket, and can easily fall out or be pulled at an angle, which can damage both the connector in the device and the RJ45 connector.

An RJ45 cover can often help protect the RJ45 connector from this type of damage, but there are also models that protect the connection itself between the cable and the connector from being exposed to influences that can pull the cable out of the connector.

If you are unsure about which RJ45 cover to choose, read below where we have gathered some knowledge about the small connectors and the options for protecting them from damage.

4 things you should know about RJ45 Covers

There are RJ45 covers in many variations, although the RJ45 connector itself is a standard and therefore always has the same shape and size.

Below we have gathered a bit more knowledge about the protection of both RJ45 connectors and cables, with a cover.

#1 - How an RJ45 Cover Works

An RJ45 cover is a small protective cover made of robust and slightly flexible plastic, which protects both the small locking mechanism at the top of the RJ45 connector, and can secure the connector in the socket of a device, while also protecting the connection made between the cable and the connector.

These are the two areas where the RJ45 connector is most vulnerable to damage, and therefore it is a good idea to protect them with an RJ45 cover.

The RJ45 cover is placed on the cable before it is connected with the RJ45 connector, with the cable end away from the connector. Once you have connected the cable with the connector, you can carefully slide the cover up and around the connector, and be careful not to break the small locking mechanism.

It is advisable to keep the small locking mechanism down while you push the cover around the connector.

#2 - RJ45 Cover to Protect the Connection

When the RJ45 cover is correctly positioned around the connector, the cover protects the connector by preventing the locking mechanism from getting caught on something, which could cause it to break off if, for example, the connector is pulled.

At the same time, the cover also makes it a bit harder to accidentally release the connector from the socket in the device.

The RJ45 cover protects the connection between the cable and connector by encapsulating it, thus avoiding twisting between the cable and connector.

The cover functions as a strain relief for the cable and connector, similar to how you might know it from a lamp socket, where a plastic screw is used to anchor the cable in place.

The RJ45 cover also ensures that the cable cannot bend right at the connector, but rather 1-3 cm out on the cable and away from the connection, which protects against the conductors of the cable being torn inside the connector.

An RJ45 cover thus provides a secure and durable connection between the cable and connector, while also protecting the locking mechanism.

#3 - Color Coding in RJ45 Covers

RJ45 covers come in almost all the colors of the rainbow, allowing you to use covers for your network connectors to color code the connectors, making it easier to keep track of which cable belongs to which device.

There can often be many RJ45 connectors in, for example, a modem or a switch, and if you need to disconnect a device, it can be convenient and time-saving to simply identify the correct cable by looking at the color.

Color coding is easy and straightforward, consisting simply of using the same color on each end of a cable, for example, red.

When you then need to disconnect a device, such as a computer from a modem, you can simply look at the color of the cover on the connector that is plugged into the computer, and then go out to the modem and find the connector with the same color to disconnect it.

This way, you ensure that you don't have to yank on the cable to see if you have the right one, or have a colleague or family member help you.

Color coding is often used in many different contexts and for different cable types because it is time-saving and quick to interpret, even if you are not a specialist in technology.

#4 - Designs of RJ45 Covers

There are different designs of RJ45 covers, most of which surround the entire connector and relieve the cable, and most models are made from soft plastic, which is pushed over the connector.

There are both models that enclose the entire connector, but also models that only cover the locking mechanism and the connection between the cable and connector.

You can also find models made from hard and clear plastic, resembling more of a stand that you place on the connector after it has been connected with the cable.

Common to all these designs is that they relieve the cable connection and protect the locking mechanism.
