Safe for secure storage of valuables
Here on the site, you will find our selection of safes that provide you with secure storage for valuables, whether you are on the go or at home.
Safes come in many models, sizes, and designs, and also include key boxes where you can store your spare key to the house.
Safes are often made of strong metal and have a robust locking mechanism, making them extremely difficult to break into in the event of a burglary.
Some models of safes are even made from materials that can keep the contents secure in case of fire, so if you want to secure videos and photos from your children's baby time, you might consider a fireproof safe.
A safe was previously referred to as a cash box, but since most safes increasingly contain jewelry, papers, and memories, rather than money, they are now often called a safe, security cabinet, or fireproof box.
If you are unsure of what to look for when finding your new safe, you can read below, where we have gathered some useful knowledge that can help you find the right safe for your needs.
7 things you should know when looking for a new safe
It is easy to get a bit confused when looking at the market for safes, as there are countless models in different sizes, designs, and properties.
Therefore, we have compiled some things you should pay attention to when searching for your new safe.
#1 - Consider your storage needs
Before you begin your search for a safe, you might consider some things that can narrow down the product range a bit before you really get started with the hunt.
Think about what you want to store in your security cabinet; is it, for example, jewelry or credit cards, or does it require a bit more space, such as documents, papers, folders, and other larger items where you need extra space.
This way, you can determine how big your safe needs to be to accommodate these items.
Another thing to consider is the type of protection you want, i.e., whether you want protection against theft, fire, or both.
If you are only storing jewelry and valuables, it may primarily be a safeguard against theft, but if it is important documents, a fire protection may also be necessary.
It is important to remember that a fireproof cabinet is not necessarily secured against theft, just as a safe is not necessarily secured against fire.
You should also consider what kind of lock you want in the safe; should the box be opened with fingerprints, a key, or a code? There are many options, and it may be a good idea to consider this before you start looking.
If you would like to mount the safe in a wall or in the floor, make sure to search for a safe designed for this; if it is to be mounted above the floor, it is a good idea to consider whether it should be movable or bolted to the floor.
#2 - Type of safe
When you look for a safe, you will often come across several types of safes, which largely depend on what they are intended to store.
Some security cabinets are intended to contain weapons, others for keys, papers, or jewelry, and it is often a question of keeping these and other items securely locked away to prevent both theft and fire from damaging or stealing them.
The most commonly used types of safes are key boxes and smaller safes, and the vast majority of models are increasingly fire-resistant, partly due to the strong materials they are made from.
Examples of safes:
- Gun cabinet
- Safety cabinet
- Key box
- Fireproof cabinet
#3 - Lock type for safe
There are different types of locks in the various safes, and which lock suits your needs is a matter of preference.
Combination lock
A combination lock or a mechanical code lock often consists of some wheels with numbers that must be set to the correct combination to unlock the lock.
The advantage of this type of lock is that there is no battery to replace, so you risk not being able to open the safe because the power is out.
The downside, however, is that it takes longer to open the box and it is more cumbersome to set a new code, which may mean that you do not change the code as often as you should.
Electronic code lock
An electronic code lock in the safe often consists of a numeric keypad, where you can determine a code and it is easy to change it as often as you wish.
This lock type requires batteries and often gives a signal when the battery needs to be changed, when the power level is low.
The downside of this type of lock is that if you forget to change the battery in time, the lock cannot be unlocked with the code and you must use the emergency key that often comes with this type of lock.
However, the advantages are many for this lock type, as you get many options for special security features that make it difficult to guess the code until you find the right one.
Electronic code locks indeed come with options for, for example, time delay, alarm for incorrectly entered code, and individual user codes.
Key lock
The key lock is the traditional type of lock, which is both popular and reliable, and works without codes or batteries.
But if you lose the key, you cannot open the box, or if the key is not well hidden, you risk that the thief can unlock the safe.
The advantage of this lock type for the safe is that it is relatively cheap and at the same time very secure.
Fingerprint
The latest trend in lock types for safes is the fingerprint lock, and this is often a double lock, where you also have either a key or a code lock in combination with the fingerprint.
The fingerprint is secure because it is unique, and when you also have an emergency key, you can be sure that you can always access your safe.
#4 - Size of safe
When you have to choose your new safe, the safe must of course be able to contain the items you wish to store in it, but it should also fit the location you have chosen for it.
You should be aware that the internal size may be considerably smaller than you expect, and therefore you might find a small box, such as a cardboard box, that is roughly the same size as the internal dimensions of the safe, place all the desired items in the box, and see if it is large enough.
Or place the same items in a box that can contain them and measure that box, so you have a good sense of how large a safe you need.
If you have not had a safe before, it may be wise to choose one that is a bit larger than your current need, as it is quite common to end up using the safe for more items than you may have initially planned.
#5 - Safe Design
Safes are often just rectangular metal boxes, as this shape provides the highest strength in the construction.
However, there are safes that resemble, for example, a book, which can easily be hidden on a bookshelf.
The safe shaped like a book is no larger than an ordinary book, but has plenty of space for jewelry, passports, and extra money if you are, for example, going on holiday.
Besides the outer design, there are many options for internal design in the form of, for example:
- Drawers or shelves
- Storage in the door
- Opening of the door (does it swing out, down, or up, etc.)
- Hooks for keys
- Lights
- Lining or bottom mat
- and much more.
There are many options, and it is only your wishes that determine how your safe should be arranged, or your budget, as all these arrangements can make the safe considerably more expensive than if you simply choose a box with shelves.
#6 - Safe with alarm
Some safes have an alarm that sounds if you, for example, have entered the code incorrectly 3 times, or if the box cannot recognize your fingerprint.
This feature is usually only possible when you have chosen a safe with electronic code lock or fingerprint.
The alarm is not so easy to turn off again, as you either have to enter the correct code or unlock the safe with an emergency key.
#7 - Installation of safe
Not all safes need to be mounted in a wall or on the floor; some are also particularly suitable for just resting in a cabinet or on a shelf.
The safest safe is, however, the models that are bolted to either the floor or the wall, as the thief cannot simply run off with the entire box and just open it in peace elsewhere.
Some safes may provide deductions in your insurance premium, but in such cases, there are certain requirements for the installation and securing of the box, and if you want to know more about what requirements your insurance company has, you may want to call them.
