The History of Samsung

Here on this page, you can see our large selection of Samsung products.

Samsung is a South Korean company, and one of the world's largest manufacturers of electronic devices, but Samsung actually started out as a small grocery store in 1938.

Samsung was founded by Lee Byung-Chull in Taegu, Korea, where he primarily traded in noodles and similar items in and around the city, importing them to China and its provinces.

After the Korean War in the 1950s, Lee expanded his business, began trading textiles, and opened what was then the largest wool mill in Korea.

By the late 50s, Samsung acquired three of Korea's largest banks and an insurance company, as well as firms that produced cement and fertilizer.

It was not until 1969 that Samsung entered the electronics market, where their first products were black and white televisions.

In the 1970s, the company began exporting home electronics abroad; by this time, Samsung was already a major producer in Korea and started manufacturing washing machines and refrigerators.

In the late 70s and early 80s, Samsung's electronics businesses expanded enormously, and separate branches of the company focusing on electronics were established.

Lee Byung-Chull died in 1987 and the company was taken over by his son, Lee Kun-Hee.

Under the leadership of Lee Kun-Hee, Samsung grew in electronics in the 1990s, and in the 2000s, the first Samsung Galaxy smartphone was launched.

In the first quarter of 2012, Samsung Electronics became the largest mobile producer in terms of sales.

Since 2006, the company has been behind some of the best-selling televisions, and in 2010, the Galaxy series expanded to tablets and, in 2013, smartwatches.
