Satellite receiver - TV box for receiving satellite signals

If you think that the selection of TV channels in Denmark is limited, and you don't want to pay to multiple different providers to get the channels you want, you can acquire a satellite receiver.

A satellite receiver gives you access to the so-called FTA channels. FTA stands for free to air and mainly includes English and German channels that, unlike Danish channels, are not encrypted.

This gives you access to many, many more channels, which are also free, and if you buy a satellite receiver with MPEG4 reception, you can also watch foreign TV in HD format.

Free to air channels

A satellite receiver is only for FTA channels, and cannot be used for regular antenna or cable TV. It requires that you have a satellite dish installed so you can receive the various satellite channels.

FTA (free to air) are channels that are broadcasted for free via satellite, and therefore you need a satellite receiver to watch them.

You can receive FTA channels via e.g. Astra and Hot Bird satellites.

These satellite receivers are only for FTA

Most satellite receivers are only designed to receive FTA channels. This means that you cannot use cards for e.g. Boxer or YouSee, and you cannot connect cable TV or an old-fashioned antenna to the box.

Some models do have this option, but they also cost a bit more.

So if you only have a satellite dish in e.g. the summer house or in the camper, you can easily settle for the cheapest satellite receiver to receive and show all the channels that are broadcasted as FTA, and there are actually quite a few that do, especially foreign ones.

The nature of a satellite receiver

A satellite receiver, also called a satellite receiver or satellite dish receiver, usually has USB, HDMI, and Scart connections. This makes it easy to connect to any TV, and many satellite receivers also have an electronic program guide, which allows you to easily get an overview of which programs the various channels are showing.

Via the USB connection, you can also connect an external hard drive so you can record directly from the channels, and since they are not encrypted, the recordings can also be easily played on other devices.

The slightly more expensive models also have MPEG4, which ensures that you can watch broadcasts in HD format with sharp images and fantastic sound if your TV is HD compatible. With resolutions up to 1080P, you are guaranteed the best quality.

The setup is incredibly easy. You just need to connect your satellite receiver to the TV and to the cable from the dish, and you are ready to go right away.

You can set up to 5000 channels, giving you plenty of options when you want to watch TV from other countries.

All satellite receivers come with their own remote control, which makes using the satellite receiver very easy, both when it comes to installation, which is straightforward, and later also the daily use of the receiver when you want to watch TV from distant countries.

Many satellite receivers also have a timer function, making it easy to program them to record a program if you don't have time to watch it, but are not home to start the recording manually.

Watch recorded movies, view pictures, and listen to music

The USB connection also allows you to connect an external hard drive with avi videos or jpg images for easy viewing.

You can also use the satellite receiver to listen to mp3 music files, which you can play through your TV's sound system.

Multilingual menu

When you set up your satellite receiver, you can easily set it to the language you prefer, including Danish, English, German, French, etc.

Many satellite receivers have OSC (on screen display), meaning that the setup menu is displayed on the TV screen. So you don't have to keep an eye on a small LCD display on the receiver itself to set it up.

For all types of TVs

Even if you don't have the latest flat screen TV, but an old CRT TV, you can still use a satellite receiver as long as the television is equipped with a Scart output.

A satellite receiver can handle most screen sizes, such as 4:3 and 16:9, and resolutions ranging from 480i and 480p up to 1080i and 1080p. So your TV has to be very old for you not to be able to use it with a satellite receiver.
