With a light chain, you can decorate for any occasion, whether it's for coziness or a party.
The light chains can be used all year round to create coziness both indoors and outdoors but are mainly known from festivities like Christmas and New Year.
10 things you should know before buying light chains and Christmas lights
If you're in doubt about different types of light chains, as well as their many specifications, we will help you here.
We have gathered a number of important things you should consider before buying light chains for the first time.
#1 - Types of light chains and Christmas lights
There are several types of light chains and Christmas lights, which offer different possibilities for use and placement.
Type of light chain and Christmas lights | Characteristics and use | Power or battery |
Curtain light chain with LED | Often for both indoor and outdoor use, particularly suitable for mounting on a balcony or window. | power supply or battery |
Christmas tree lights with LED | For indoor use on the Christmas tree, as they often have clips for attaching to the branches of the tree. | power supply or battery |
Candle lights with LED | For indoor use in a candlestick, as they are designed to fit into a standard size candlestick. | Battery |
Light chain with LED | For both indoor and outdoor use, and for various purposes e.g., decoration in bottles, vases and mirrors, or for decorating e.g., trees, shrubs, and houses. | power supply or battery |
Light net with LED | Often used outdoors, but can also be used indoors for decoration of shrubs or balconies, etc. | power supply and cable |
Light stake | For both indoor and outdoor use and often has a stake for using to put it in the ground. | power supply and cable |
Light chain | Light chains for both indoor and outdoor use, with and without LED | power supply or battery |
Music Dongle USB | Used to control the light in relation to music, when light chains and Christmas lights are connected to WiFi. | Power supply |
#2 - The length of the light chain
The actual length, and thus the size of your light chain, is one of the most important things to investigate.
If you for example buy a light chain that is too short/small, you might end up with a half-decorated Christmas tree, which is obviously not fun.
A good idea is to measure with a string or similar, and pull the string as you would want your potential light chain set up.
Additionally, you can just measure the length of the string, and thus have an approximate length you know you will need for your upcoming light chain.
Just be careful not to buy a light chain that is far too big, as this can also lead to a bit of a messy decoration and setup if there is too much of the light chain/wire left over.
Lengths are always specified in the product info of the light chain, and are typically indicated in number of meters.
#3 - Light chains with colored bulbs
For a more festive decoration, you can choose light chains that have bulbs in different colors.
This is for example a good solution if you are throwing a party, where you want something colorful and festive lighting.
Colors are often very vibrant and can be found in variants such as:
- Red
- Orange
- Blue
- Purple
- Green
- Yellow
There is also the option in some light chains to adjust the colors yourself, allowing you to get the exact shades you need.
You can choose between light chains that either have large bulbs, or the very small ones you might have used for Christmas decoration.
Some light chains for festive occasions also have a built-in microphone, allowing them to blink to the rhythm of the music.
#4 - Energy-efficient and environmentally friendly lighting
Most light chains and Christmas lighting are made with LED bulbs, as it provides beautiful light and is cheap to operate.
LED also ensures that you can have your light chain for several years in a row, as LED has a longer lifespan than the incandescent bulb.
At the same time, LED bulbs use minimal power, so when Christmas lights and light chains are turned on, the power consumption doesn't skyrocket, and neighbors don't lose power because the grid becomes overloaded.
#5 - Power supply or battery
Although light chains and Christmas lights with LED use very little power, they still need power to light up.
The most common is that either a power supply with a cable is used, or that the unit uses batteries.
Depending on where the unit will be used, whether outside or inside, it almost makes sense whether there should be a power supply or battery.
Other times the choice is made because a given device is only available with one or the other power input.
Functionally, there isn't a big difference between whether the device has a battery or power from a power supply.
They work as they should, and the biggest difference is that for the battery-operated units, you need to remember to change the battery occasionally.
#6 - Color temperature (Kelvin) in light chains
Light chains and Christmas lights come in many different colors and in several shades of white, often referred to as "color temperature".
Color temperature is a term for how the actual color of the light from the light chain looks and feels.
Here are examples of different Kelvin numbers, and where they are typically used:
Color temperature (Kelvin) | 2700K | 3000K | 5000K |
Appearance | A warm white, sometimes a bit yellow color | A warm white color | Bright as daylight |
Mood | Cozy light for relaxation (Primarily used in homes) | Warm and welcoming | Very illuminating, and "sharp". |
Most used in | Kitchen, living room, bedroom. Typically for floor/table lamps, pendant lamps or chandeliers. | The garage, basement, attic. Very strong light, typically used for powerful lamps for work or safety. |
So whether you need a light chain that can light up in different colors, or one that can light up in a particular shade of white, it is possible to find a match.
White shades are often assessed in terms of whether they are cold or warm white, indicating how blue or yellow the light is.
A cold or clear white is typically more blue in the light, while a warm white often has a slightly more yellow or beige hue.
It is also possible to find light chains that have a golden, also called gold, hue.
#7 - Light chain with Remote Control, timer, or manual operation
Would you like to be able to turn on the light in the garden, from the sofa, with a remote control or perhaps an app?
Or should the light come on at 8 PM and turn off 3 hours later?
Light chains and Christmas lights come with many options for on and off functions, some chains even have the option to adjust the brightness.
If desired, the light chain or Christmas light can be controlled via an app, although this requires the light chain has WiFi functionality.
This means that if you already control all your lighting with an app via your WiFi connection, you can also connect the light chain to this network.
You can get light chains with remote control, where you can both adjust the brightness and turn the light on and off, without touching the plug or the light chain.
Other devices have a timer that turns the chain on and off at fixed intervals typically with 3, 6, and 9 hour intervals.
You can also choose the very simple solution, where you walk up to the light chain and turn it on either at the switch or the chain.
#8 - Indoor or outdoor
A light chain that is intended for indoor use cannot simply be assumed to be usable outdoors.
There are indeed different requirements for light chains used outside and inside.
A light chain used outdoors must obviously be able to withstand wind and weather, without short-circuiting at the slightest drop of rain.
An outdoor chain often also needs to endure larger temperature fluctuations than an indoor chain.
It is therefore important to clarify where the light chain or Christmas light will be used.
Some light chains and Christmas lights are approved for both indoor and outdoor use, and therefore meet both the IP44 classification.
#9 - Decorative or functional lighting
Light chains can be used all year round, both as decorative lighting and as functional lighting.
You can use light chains indoors to highlight or hide elements, or find a light chain intended to put in a bottle and quickly create a beautiful lamp, with cozy light for outdoor and indoor use.
Some light chains have the option to adjust the brightness, these will typically be well suited as functional lighting, where there is no need for a strong lamp, but a soft background light.
You can create beautiful chandeliers to hang outside on the terrace and extend the grilling evening, only your imagination sets the limits.
#10 - Types of Christmas light chains
There are Christmas light chains that come in the same color as the tree, thereby “camouflaging” nicely into the tree's decoration.
You can also get light chains that look like real candles, but have the advantage that they obviously do not use open flames, and thus pose no danger of igniting the tree.
You can also find beautiful light chains that have large bulbs instead of the very small ones if you want a beautiful and powerful lighting in specific areas of your Christmas decoration.
Christmas lights are also available in the form of a small LED tree, which can be set up outdoors or in a windowsill indoors to beautifully illuminate during the Christmas season.
FAQ about light chains
How much power does an LED light chain use?
Most light chains use LED bulbs to illuminate with. Small light chains use as little as 0.04W per hour, whereas the slightly larger variants with big bulbs use 5-7W. You just have to sum this for all light chains you have and the number of hours you use them, thereby knowing your total power consumption for your light chains.
Can all light chains be used outdoors?
Most light chains are designed and classified to be used outdoors. However, there can be exceptions where some light chains are only suitable for indoor use. Look for the IP65 classification, as this means the light chain is suitable for outdoor use in very cold or very hot climate.
