Switches for socket - Find the one that fits perfectly in your home
Here on the page you will find our selection of switches for any socket, both for private homes, industrial buildings, offices, and wherever else you have outlets installed.
Switches are often a more overlooked type of a room's decor, which is a shame.
Not only do they protect you from the internal wires, but you can also personalize the switches to match your walls, lamps and light sources, cabinets, and whatever else you want to match your switch with.
5 things to consider when looking at switches
Switches often provide the finishing touch to outlets and light switches.
They protect the devices while also giving a decorative finish, whether you choose to blend them with or contrast them against the wall.
Your switches will often come in the same package as the outlets themselves, but you can also easily find them sold separately.
Switches come in a wide range of configurations, from single to multiple modules, as well as switches for outdoor and indoor use.
They are typically made of plastic, thermoplastic, or stainless steel, and are typically available in standard, medium, and jumbo sizes.
#1 - Types of Switches
When you think about which types of switches you want in your home, it’s important that you choose the one that best fits your home and your outlets.
The most common switches are those that fit light switches, where you can control the lights in the room, and the switches that fit outlets with 2 modules (the entry ports for the actual plugs), where you can connect lamps, smaller appliances, and other household devices.
You can also find switches with larger openings, which adapt to both rocker and dimmer switches, as well as switches designed for universal USB outlets.
In many newer homes, you will also find switches that adapt to coaxial and HDMI connections; these types of switches are intended for cable TV, satellites, and audio-video connections.
#2 - Switch Configurations
Switches come in many different configurations, so they can fit nearly all different types of socket and plug requirements.
The most common types of configurations are:
- Light switch: typically accommodates a single light switch.
- Socket: typically accommodates one or two sockets.
- Blank: typically isolates unused boxes, thus hiding wires.
- Combination: often has a selection of both light switches and sockets, or other types of configurations.
- Section: used for multi-installations. Homeowners can build a larger switch by matching their configurations and snapping them together for a smooth look.
Switches are divided into what are called modules; for example, a switch designed for light sockets is often called a 1-module switch, whereas if there is also an accompanying input in the form of a single socket, it will be called a 1½-module switch.
#3 - Switch Sizes
Switch sizes are an important consideration, both for functionality and aesthetics.
Aesthetics matter significantly when it comes to switches, as it is often something you will have to look at for a longer period; therefore, it’s important that the switch doesn’t become a definite nuisance for you to deal with.
Typically, 1-module switches come in three different sizes:
- Standard: 11 x 6 cm.
- Medium: 12 x 7 cm.
- Jumbo: 13 x 8 cm.
It varies greatly, and there will be exceptions, but these are usually the sizes you encounter when it comes to 1-module switches.
The switches should completely cover the electrical box, so they can hide wires and similar items.
If you use a larger switch, you will often also be able to cover any reductions in drywall, painting errors, or overly large openings.
In the case that you have small children in the home, you can also find screwless switches, which instead use an internal plate that snaps into the electrical box, and a smooth outer plate that covers the screws.
#4 - Switch Materials
Switches can be made in almost all types of materials, so it’s about finding the material that will best suit the environment it will be in.
The most commonly used material is plastic, also called polycarbonate, which is a sturdy and inexpensive nylon that can withstand several years of use without breaking or cracking.
Some types of thermoplastic switches are flexible enough to adapt to textured and uneven walls.
Wooden switches provide a more rustic and charming look to a room, while ceramic switches fit well with tiled walls.
Other types of materials include metal, ceramic, stone, wood, and glass, but the most popular types of materials are:
- PCT, polycarbonate thermoplastic:
Unlike traditional plastic switches, PCT switches are nearly indestructible, they cannot be damaged.
The material also has great resistance to extreme heat and also to light exposure.
Therefore, the material is especially effective in private and commercial buildings.
- Stainless Steel:
Unlike plastic, switches made of stainless steel are extremely durable and have a high resistance to heat, fading, and corrosive materials.
Stainless steel is the most common type of metal switches, and is therefore used for various types of applications, especially in the industry and commercial sectors.
- Polished Metal:
This gives you the same strength and the same properties as stainless steel, but with a more stylish and refined look.
This type of switch can come in a wide range of different finishes, with chrome and copper being the most popular variants.
Polished metal switches are often alloyed and can therefore also come with brushed finishes.
#5 - Switch Colors
While many choose the classic and minimalist white switch, you can still get several different colors that either blend in with or, on the contrary, contrast with their surroundings.
Choosing the right color can often be a daunting task, but it becomes easier when there is more to choose from.
Standard colors
These types of colors are most often always available for the general artist, and you can find them in several different sizes and styles, while designer switches are often more limited and expensive.
Standard colors are typically:
- White
- Black
- Ivory
- Light almond
- Brown
- Gray
Designer colors
These colors have been developed with high-end home decor in mind, and therefore there’s also an important thing to remember.
Standard colors are more universal and fit into nearly everything, while designer colors can limit the style and type of device you can install due to availability and demand.
While there is a wide variety of different colors, it also varies from company to company.
Here you will find a list of the most common designer colors:
- Nickel
- Gold
- Silver
- Dark bronze
- Rose gold
Finish and Texture
Many consumers on the market for switches will often encounter different types of finishes.
Typical switch finishes and textures include, but are not limited to:
- Glossy
- Matte
- Brushed
- Framed
- Textured
- Patterned (embossed)
