14 things you need to know about tea machines
If you are about to choose a tea machine or consider buying one, then here are 14 things you should know about tea machines.
#1 Capacity
If you expect to be able to make larger batches of tea at once, you should of course ensure that the capacity is large enough.
Most tea machines make around 1 - 1.5 L at a time, but there are also smaller and larger sizes.
On many of the teapots, you will be able to see a measuring indicator, so you can easily see how much water you are adding to your tea machine.
#2 Materials
Most tea machines have a pot made of glass, which makes it easier for you to keep an eye on the color of your tea.
Sometimes it can be easy to tell by the color whether the tea has steeped for too long or not enough, so it becomes easier for you to brew good tea when the pot is made of glass.
Other parts of the tea machine are typically made of materials like stainless steel and plastic.
Additionally, components like handles are sometimes made of other materials such as wood, to provide a nice design, or rubber, which offers a good surface to hold on to.
#3 Tea filter
To make it easy to brew the tea, the tea machines have a tea filter where you can add loose tea.
The tea filter can mostly be removed, so it can be cleaned easily, but also so the kettle can be used just to boil water without the filter.
For example, if you are making matcha, it should not go in a filter, but instead be whisked out in the water, and therefore you need to boil the water separately and pour it into a cup with matcha afterward.
#4 Keep warm function
Most tea machines have a keep warm function, where the tea stays heated at a specific temperature that you can often specify.
This way, you have the opportunity to keep your tea warm for a longer time and do not have to make a new batch every time you want tea, which is convenient if you drink tea many times a day.
#5 Brewing time
It varies how long the brewing time is with the different machines, as well as there being differences from program to program.
#6 Adjustable temperature
On most machines, you can set the temperature yourself so you can get exactly the temperature you want your tea to be brewed at.
This means that you can easily get the right temperature for different types of tea, to achieve the best flavor.
#7 Timer
A timer can help you brew the almost perfect cup of tea, as you can easily time how long the tea steeps.
It is almost a bit of an art to brew tea, and all types of tea are different and therefore require different steeping times, and a timer is a great help to keep track of.
#8 Control lamp / indicator light
On the tea machine, you will almost always find a control lamp or indicator light, which is on when the machine is turned on and off when the machine is turned off.
This way you can also easily keep an eye on whether the auto-off function works, if the machine is indeed equipped with such a function.
#9 Non-slip protection
Under most hot plates, there are non-slip feet, to prevent the tea machine from sliding around on the kitchen counter when you boil water.
It is a really good idea to have non-slip protection when you are dealing with very hot water, so that the tea machine is not too easily pushed and tips over onto the floor.
#10 Pre-set programs
On some tea machines, you can specify what type of tea you want to brew, for example white, green, or black tea.
The tea programs help you prepare the different types of tea so they get the right temperature specifically for that type of tea, and typically they also assist with the best steeping time.
However, on some tea machines, you can also find programs for coffee, or other types of hot drinks.
When you need to boil water for coffee or other things that require boiled water, you can simply choose not to use the filter.
This means that you can use the tea machine to boil water for many other things besides just tea, although it may be a good idea to rinse the pot afterward so the water does not take on flavor from residues.
#11 Hot plate
There are primarily two different types of hot plates for tea machines, where one is specifically a hot plate that resembles induction cooktops quite a bit.
The other is a heating element with a heating spiral, where the kettle is placed over and
#12 Auto-off and dry boil protection
It is a really good idea to ensure that your tea machine has an auto-off or dry boil protection function, so you do not risk the tea machine burning out.
Additionally, auto-off is also a good idea to save a bit on electricity, so the tea machine does not just stay on for an extended period of time.
#13 Measuring spoon
Some tea machines come with a measuring spoon, so you can easily get the right amount of tea for just your tea machine or portion size.
#14 Water filter
Some tea machines have a built-in water filter that filters out limescale from the water.
This helps both to provide a better and cleaner taste, as well as keeping limescale away from the machine so you do not have to descale it too often.
Limescale does wear on the kettle and can reduce the machine's functionality and thus also its lifespan.
Tea machine vs. Electric kettle vs. Hot water dispenser
When you look at some tea machines, you might think they look quite a bit like an electric kettle.
Electric kettles and tea machines actually resemble each other quite a lot, where the only major difference is the built-in tea filter that is in the tea machine.
However, there are also some other minor functions that you primarily see with tea machines, but which can actually also occur with electric kettle models.
This includes the keep warm function and various temperature settings.
Some tea machines resemble hot water dispensers, which, like electric kettles, boil hot water.
This type of tea machine can in many cases both make tea and hot water, so it is a tea machine and hot water dispenser in one.
However, you usually see them in larger workplaces and office environments, which is why they are typically quite expensive and take up a lot of space.
At avXperten we have a wide selection of kitchen machines, among other things you can find hot water dispensers, preserving pot, brewing kettle and timer.
