VGA to HDMI - from analog to digital
Here on the page you will find our complete selection of VGA to HDMI adapters, which can convert an analog signal to digital.
If you have an older computer and want to connect a new monitor, you might encounter that the monitor requires an HDMI port, but that there is none such input on your computer.
The computer will typically have a VGA port and to convert this port to an HDMI port, you will need an adapter, which is also called a converter, known as VGA to HDMI.
You cannot buy a cable that has VGA on one end and HDMI on the other, because VGA is an analog signal and HDMI is a digital signal, and therefore you need to use an adapter.
However, the adapter can be permanently attached to a cable, so you get a cable with a converter in the middle.
5 things you should know when looking for VGA to HDMI
There are several models of adapters for VGA to HDMI and even adapters that go the opposite way, and if you are in doubt about what to look for, read along here, where we have gathered some points that are good to be aware of.
#1 - Type of VGA to HDMI adapter
There are several types of adapters for VGA to HDMI and one of the things you can particularly look for is the number of pixels that can be transferred.
Typically, newer monitors should display HD format, which corresponds to 1080 P, meaning that your adapter should be able to convert the analog signal to 1080P digital signal.
It is also important that you choose a good quality adapter to get the best possible signal out of your VGA port.
Examples of types of VGA to HDMI adapters include:
- HDMI to VGA adapter
- VGA to HDMI adapter
- VGA to HDMI cable
The types primarily depend on the port combinations on the adapters, while the function remains the same.
#2 - VGA to HDMI with or without sound
If you also need to transfer sound to your monitor, you should be aware that this cannot be done via the VGA port.
For this, you can get an adapter that simultaneously converts from VGA to HDMI and also transfers sound to the adapter via a 3.5 mini-jack port, so both sound and picture are transferred to the monitor via the HDMI port.
You can also use such an adapter only to transfer sound and for example connect external speakers.
Some adapters can also transfer sound and audio via a USB port in the same way as the 3.5 mini-jack port can.
USB ports in connection with a VGA to HDMI adapter are sometimes also used to power the adapter via the USB port.
Sound can also be transferred through adapters that can accept RCA plugs, which are the small plugs with red and white colors, providing very good stereo sound.
#3 - Port combinations for VGA to HDMI
When you need to choose your adapter, you should be aware of which port combination you need.
There are both female and male connectors for both HDMI and VGA ports, and these can be combined in different ways.
For example, if you have a female HDMI connector, where a cable can be inserted, it requires that you have an HDMI cable with a male connector, since monitors often also have a female connector.
On the other hand, if you have a male HDMI connector, you can place the adapter close to the monitor, so the adapter can go into the monitor's female connector.
On the other end, it works in the same way for VGA connectors.
You can find models of adapters with almost any combination:
- female/female
- female/male
- male/male
What you need can best be seen by looking at the ports on the two devices you want to connect; if there is an indentation where you can insert something into the device, you need a male connector, and if there is something protruding, you need a female connector.
#4 - Get the best experience with VGA to HDMI
VGA to HDMI converters can be found in various qualities, and it may not pay off to buy the cheapest one if you want a better quality image displayed on the monitor.
Quality and price are quite closely related for these converters, and when an analog signal needs to be converted to a digital one, there will always be some loss of signal quality during this conversion, and noise may also occur in the signal.
By choosing a good adapter, you can minimize this signal loss and noise, giving you the best possible image and audio.
You should also consider the quality of your HDMI cable, because if it is one of the cheap ones from the local supermarket, you may lose more signal quality, as the resistance in the cable is greater than in the more expensive HDMI cables.
Therefore, it is advantageous to use a good HDMI cable.
When you connect your adapter, it can be a good idea to restart the devices, as the VGA signal can achieve better compatibility with the connected device.
#5 - Combination with other adapters
If you need to connect multiple devices to your computer via the VGA port and you only have a single VGA port, a VGA to HDMI adapter can potentially be combined with a VGA Splitter.
This way, you split the VGA signal up to multiple adapters or HDMI cables and can possibly connect multiple monitors to even an old computer.
However, you should be aware that for each device or adapter connected to the VGA signal, you will lose some signal quality.
Alternatively, you also have the option to connect an HDMI splitter, which only splits the signal after the conversion from VGA to HDMI has taken place; this can sometimes lead to better quality.
In addition to adapters that convert from VGA to HDMI, there are also adapters that can convert VGA to other types of plugs, for example:
- VGA to DVI
- VGA to RGB
- VGA to SCART
