3 things to consider before buying an XLR cable

Are you completely new to the music scene, being a new musician and not yet mastering all the equipment and accessories like an XLR cable, then just relax because we have an overall guide on XLR cables below, so you can become an expert in them.

It is a good idea to set aside ample time for reading before you dive into buying an XLR cable that you can benefit from for your music equipment.

We will go through the different types of XLR cables available on the market and their exciting features.

We will also make you aware of the different lengths of XLR cables and delve deeper into the difference between XLR cables and DMX cables.

#1 - Types of XLR cables and characteristics

There are several different types of XLR cables available on the market and all of them are used in the audio and music industry.

As a musician, you might consider what type of XLR cable you need right now, before you go on tour.

We have compiled a list of the different types of XLR cables, so you can be informed about their characteristics:

  • XLR 3 cable. This is the type of XLR cable that is commonly used to connect microphones to an amplifier. If you have a microphone with a three-pin input, then you need an XLR 3 cable.
  • XLR 4 cable. This type of XLR cables is used for intercom headsets and professional film equipment. It can also be used for tabletop microphones that have four pins, of which the fourth pin can be used to keep an LED light on the microphone lit.
  • XLR 5 cable. An XLR 5 cable is used for stereo microphones and stereo intercom headsets. XLR 5 cables are especially used for digital control of lighting on stage and for most other music equipment.
  • XLR 6 cable. It is similar to an XLR 6 cable, but it is primarily used for intercom systems with dual channels and for the equipment used to control lighting on stage. You can also use an XLR 6 cable for professional stereo headsets with a balanced microphone.
  • XLR 7 cable. XLR 7 cables have seven pins and are commonly used for large concert halls. They are also used for intercoms that news broadcasts use during their live recordings.
  • XLR adapter cable. If you need to connect some professional audio equipment like a microphone to a 3.5 mm device like your computer, you can do so using an XLR adapter cable.

It is recommended that you take your time exploring our large selection of XLR cables and click on each one to view their technical specifications.

This way, you can be sure to purchase the right XLR cable.

#2 - Cable length of XLR cables

You can purchase XLR cables in various lengths depending on your needs.

If you are performing as a musician or a DJ on a large stage, it will be appropriate to buy an XLR cable of a certain length, so you can ensure that the connectors can reach your music equipment.

If it is a small setup on a smaller stage, where a shorter XLR cable is sufficient, then that is obviously what you should go for.

The XLR cables you can find in our selection have a minimum length of 1.5 meters and a maximum length of 20 meters.

You have the option to click on each of the XLR cables and see the different lengths they are available in before you make your purchase of an XLR cable.

#3 - The difference between XLR cables and DMX cables

As you can see from our selection of XLR cables, we also have DMX cables which may seem confusing at first glance.

We have both cable types because they are used for the same purpose, but there are some differing differences in their internal technology and efficiency.

Both XLR cables and DMX cables often have three pins, which you can see on the cable ends and connectors, and you can also see more about this in our selection of them.

Here is something about the concrete difference between them:

  • XLR cables. XLR cables are typically referred to as microphone cables, as that is their primary function for most stage setups. If you, as a musician, have not planned a large stage show, then XLR cables are perfectly fine to use for a smaller setup that does not require extensive technical maneuvers.
  • DMX cables. The good thing about DMX cables is that they are somewhat more versatile and effective, as they can cover several things, even if it involves using a microphone, an amplifier, a soundboard, and also for lighting on your stage. A DMX cable has a somewhat higher OHM value compared to an XLR cable, which is relevant when you need to pull some cables over more than a couple of meters distance, as they are better at transmitting the signal to, for instance, your microphone.

The advantage of having XLR cables

If you are a serious musician or DJ, you also need to be serious about the sound work of your show.

In this context, you cannot do without the use of XLR cables, as they are a good and effective solution.

With XLR cables, you can be sure to have a stable connection to your setup and have good sound quality, so you can deliver a fantastic music experience to your audience.

Furthermore, many audio devices for professional use actually require that you use XLR or DMX cables, so you cannot use the equipment optimally without them.
