7 things to consider before choosing a bathing basin

Before you just go out and buy a bathing basin, there are many things to consider in order to find the perfect bathing basin for you.

There are many things about a bathing basin that are good to know before you just go out and buy one. The capacity, size, and safety are just a few of the things that are good to have sorted out beforehand.

Below are a few points presented that are good to consider before you go out and buy a bathing basin as there are many different bathing basins.

#1 - Consider the space you want to allocate for your bathing basin

The first thing you should consider carefully is how large an area in your garden you want to use for your new bathing basin.

It is incredibly important to know that various pools for the garden cover smaller or larger areas, and in many cases may also mean that the grass underneath will be a bit damaged after the summer season and will only grow back next year.

Additionally, if you live in an inner city area, there may be limited space in your garden, so it’s important to read about our bathing basin regarding how much space it takes up, so you don’t take up too much space in your garden if you don’t want to.

#2 - Number of liters

One of the biggest points to consider is the number of liters the bathing basin can hold. Aside from the size, it’s the number of liters that determines how deep and large the bathing basin is.

The more liters it can hold, the deeper it can usually also be. In addition, the number of liters also determines how long it will take you to fill the pool.

Therefore, the number of liters plays an important role when you are considering buying a bathing basin.

#3 - Size and shape

There are many different bathing basins available in many different sizes. Therefore, it can sometimes be overwhelming to choose one.

“The bigger, the better” is not always true when it comes to bathing basins. The larger the bathing basin, the more it will also require to maintain it.

It’s usually always indicated in the product description how big the bathing basin is and how many people it is suitable for.

Choose the size of the bathing basin based on how many people it is for and the sizes of the individuals.

You should also consider whether the bathing basin is just for relaxation or if there should be space for water activities and play.

The largest bathing basins can be almost 6 meters in diameter and a height of 130 cm, so there is plenty of room for splashing and engaging in water activities like water polo.

The shape of your bathing basin can also have a lot to say regarding both appearance and functionality, as well as setup and placement in your garden.

There are generally 3 shapes that are used for most bathing basins:

  • Rectangular bathing basin. Good for children due to easy access to edges. Can be made in very large models or small, suitable for both children and adults.
  • Round bathing basin. Probably the most popular shape, due to its beautiful appearance, and easy placement in the garden. Often suitable for many people, and can be found in both very small models for the littlest ones, or very large robust models for the whole family.
  • Oval bathing basin. Combines rectangular and round bathing basins with each other, forming a beautiful oval, where you can have space for many and for example, lie on your pool mattress without problems.

#4 - Children’s basin or adult basin

If it’s children who will also use the bathing basin, consider a children’s basin instead, as the larger bathing basins are mostly for adults due to the height and depth of these basins.

Children's basins are often much smaller in size and more colorful. From that, you can easily distinguish between a children's basin and an adult basin.

Children's basins are suitable for children from 1 year and can have a capacity of about 1000 liters. They are easy to use, as they generally just need to be inflated and filled with water.

Furthermore, children's bathing basins often also have some form of inflatable toy to stimulate the children.

It could for example be inflatable palm trees, basketball hoops or other inflatable pool animals.

Adult bathing basins are often larger and deeper and can hold over 6500 liters of water. Therefore, they are not intended for children under 130 cm.

In terms of size, adult bathing basins are typically so large that many people can fit in them, whereas children's basins often can only hold 1-3 children at a time.

#5 - Placement of the bathing basin

The placement of the bathing basin can be important for you, depending on how large your bathing basin is and whether it’s for children or adults.

If it is a children's basin, there are certain things to consider, both for the children and also for the basin itself.

Place the children's basin as openly as possible so you always have the opportunity to keep an eye on the children in it. Place it on a soft surface to avoid damage to the basin.

It’s a great idea to place it somewhere where the sun stands high and can shine down on the bathing basin, so the children don’t get too cold when they play in the water.

Adult bathing basins should also have some form of underlay. Because they can quickly get holes if placed on hard and rough surfaces like asphalt or similar.

Be aware that if you place a bathing basin too long out on the lawn, it will most likely leave marks on the grass when you remove it again.

Some of the larger bathing basins should be placed openly and not under trees or similar, as it can quickly become a big task for you to remove leaves and branches from the pool from the trees.

#6 - Types of bathing basins

Although the bathing basins look similar and have the same purpose, there are different types of bathing basins.

The different types of bathing basins may better suit your needs, depending on what you want to use the bathing basin for and how many people it should be for.

The following exist:

  • Children's basins
  • Fast-set-Pool bathing basins
  • Bathing basins with side walls

#1 - Children's basins

Children's basins are often inflatable and do not require much water to fill up. They have a capacity of about 1000 liters and can be filled within 10-15 minutes.

They are not very durable as the material is often made of PVC plastic and therefore not very robust or resistant to twigs and branches.

They also cannot tolerate being left outside year-round, so you should always pack them away after use to increase their lifespan.

#2 - Fast-set-pool bathing basins

These bathing basins are actually a mix between a children's basin and a bathing basin with side walls.

They are inflatable like the children's basin but can be almost as large as bathing basins with side walls.

They are easy and quick to set up and are often competitively priced compared to side wall basins.

These pools are recognizable by their inflatable edge and can typically be found in sizes from 3 - 4.5 meters in diameter with a depth of just over 90 cm.

These are therefore suitable for both adults and children over 100 cm.

#3 - Bathing basins with side walls

The largest bathing basins available are often those with side walls. This type of bathing basin is unlike the other two not made of inflatable materials.

To set up these types of bathing basins, you simply need to erect the side walls and connect them, forming a ring.

Then it is already ready for water filling. However, it can take up to 30 minutes to fill these bathing basins as they are so large and deep.

These bathing basins can have a diameter of almost 6 meters and a depth of 120 cm. Therefore, these bathing basins are more suitable for adults and teenagers over 130 cm.

#7 - How easy is the pool to install/setup?

The setup of your bathing basin depends a lot on its size and purpose.

If it is a bathing basin suitable primarily for children, these can often be inflated via a compressor or a hand/foot pump.

If it is a larger pool, typically the ones you may have seen in blue colors, it often requires a bit more setup.

This includes building the frame or “skeleton” around the pool, so the base/sides can be firmly secured and stabilized.

Additionally, larger and more advanced pools often have a filtration system, which requires access to electricity, typically via an extension cord.

It should, no matter which pool you choose, not take much more than an hour or two to set it up, and then a few additional hours to fill it, depending on how many liters it can hold.

Cleaning the bathing basin

To clean your bathing basin, it often requires a combination of various brushes/pool nets, as well as chlorine treatments.

There are a range of different chemicals used for cleaning pools such as:

Chemical for PoolFunction
ChlorineKills bacteria and algae
pH agent (+ or -)Adjusts pH value in the water to the correct level
AlgaecidePrevents and removes algae

The process itself is fortunately very easy, but it can take longer the larger your bathing basin is.

Before you chlorinate your bathing basin, it is important to filter out as much dirt, leaves, and insects as possible first.

This is easiest done with a net/pool pole, which can easily catch these residues, making them easy to remove.

Furthermore, a pool with pump is a brilliant solution, as it collects a fair amount of dirt and debris in its filter, which you can empty as needed.

After you have cleaned it, a chlorine treatment can remove various algae and ensure that the water is clean and pleasant to bathe in.

Frequently asked questions about the bathing basin

What does it cost to fill a bathing basin?

To calculate this, you must know what you pay per m³ of water and multiply it by per 1000 liters. If you have, for example, a bathing basin that can hold 4000 liters and the price for 1m³ is 54 kr. it will cost you 212 kr. to fill your bathing basin with 4000 liters.

How long can a bathing basin stay?

It is recommended to change the bathing water when it starts to feel slippery at the bottom. Otherwise, it should be changed every day if the sun is high and it is warm. Heat easily attracts bacteria, which is not good for bathing.

What should the bathing basin stand on?

The bathing basin should stand on a soft surface so that nothing can puncture the bathing basin. Grass is, for example, a fine place to have your bathing basin.
