Dehydrator - Make your own dried fruits, vegetables, etc.
With a dehydrator, you can make your very own delicious dried snacks.
The dehydrator removes moisture from various raw materials, but without taking away all the vitamins and minerals, so you still get the good nutrition from your food.
The most popular use is primarily for fruits and vegetables, where you can make incredibly tasty snacks, such as dried bananas, pineapples, and much, much more.
Below you can read more about our smart dehydrators.
We will quickly go through how they actually work, as well as what you should look for before your purchase, so you get the right unit for your needs.
How does a dehydrator work?
A dehydrator removes moisture from raw materials, which is a popular way to preserve raw materials, especially fruits and vegetables.
The taste can change significantly, but the amount of vitamins and minerals is actually close to the same.
Using a dehydrator is actually incredibly easy:
- Cut your raw materials into thin slices of roughly the same size for best results.
- Place them in one of the trays in your dehydrator, without stacking them on top of each other.
- Start the machine by selecting the temperature and possibly time if you know the recipe well.
- Keep an eye on your food along the way, to ensure it doesn't get too much.
- When you think they are done, simply turn off the heat.
- Let your raw materials cool completely in good time before storing them.
- Preferably store them in a completely airtight container to keep them fresh longer.
Dried fruits and vegetables last a remarkably long time compared to normal, giving you long-lasting snacks that are ready to eat whenever you want.
Look for these 5 things before you buy a Dehydrator
Choosing a dehydrator is fortunately very easy.
They are each relatively close to the same, but there are some specific conditions and functions that don't necessarily apply to all models.
Read more about what functions they might have right below.
#1 - Size
The first thing you should consider is how big your dehydrator should be.
The size obviously allows you to make more dried raw materials at the same time, which is suitable for the large family or for you who just want to make a lot at once.
The models you find in our selection have different sizes according to needs.
You will quickly notice that various models of dehydrators have different numbers of trays, and it is these trays that determine the size.
Each tray is used to store the raw materials that need to be dried, and the more, the better if you want a large dehydrator.
#2 - Design, color, and material
This point is not necessarily important for the actual food you want to make, but more a thing to consider in relation to the style of your home.
A dehydrator can be relatively large, and therefore many actually choose to hide it away when they are done using it.
However, it can take a while to finish, so it is an advantage to choose a machine designed in a material and/or color that fits your kitchen decor.
The colors are typically very neutral, where you often choose a mix of white, black, and stainless steel as materials besides plastic.
#3 - Adjustable temperature
With adjustable temperature, you can set how much heat your dehydrator should use when drying your raw materials.
This may be necessary for specific recipes that require a certain temperature.
The function is typically controlled by a button or dial on the dehydrator, which you can press or turn to the desired temperature.
This way, you get the precise temperature you need and can ensure that your recipe is followed to perfection.
#4 - Cooking options
When you choose a dehydrator, it's important to consider what you actually want to make with it.
Some dehydrators are specifically made for dehydrating various foods, such as focusing on vegetables, fruits, or meat.
Overall, most dehydrators can dry any food, but it may be advantageous to separate meat from vegetables and fruits.
Here are just a few examples of what you can make with a dehydrator:
- Dried bananas
- Dried meat
- Dried cucumbers
- Dried carrots
- Dried tomatoes
- Dried mango
- And countless other raw materials
It can indeed be a bit challenging to get the taste/smell out of the machine if you don't clean it frequently, which is why many choose to use one or more dehydrators depending on whether you want to dry both vegetables, fruits, and meat or even bread.
#5 - Power consumption
Depending on the brand you choose, you can expect different power consumption.
The power consumption is of course often higher in larger machines, as they can handle more raw materials at once.
However, there are still differences between brands, even if they have equally large capacities, and this is where you should pay attention if you're concerned about power consumption.
For example, we have had 2 equally sized dehydrators from different brands in our assortment.
One had a power of 240W while the other had a power of 280W.
Thus, you could save a little on power simply by choosing another brand.
However, you will find that the power consumption is very close to each other, so it may be that you'd prefer to spend a little more on the electricity bill to get the precise model you want.
