Discman - CD Player on the go

Much music and their players have transitioned to a digital format where there is no need for cassette tapes, CDs, or vinyl records.

These have instead become retro and niche products that most people no longer use, but have gained sentimental value and many music enthusiasts are still very interested in continuing to play the old classics.

With a Discman, you get the chance to continue playing your old CD collection that you have lying around, so you can still enjoy the music many years later.

A Discman also gives you the option to listen to music when you're on the go, whether you're out for a walk, cycling, or running for exercise.

Some types of Discman also have built-in speakers, so you can enjoy the music together with family and friends when you're out in the summer or at the beach to enjoy the weather.

With a Discman, you get many more options to listen to your old music or audiobooks that you have lying on CD.

If you also have a CD burner, you can also make your own CDs that can take the music you want on vacation.

You are also not bound by having to have a constant internet connection, where for example, apps like Spotify require an internet connection to play your music for you.

Therefore, it can still be an advantage in this digital age to have a good Discman that can help you play your old classics so they no longer lie and gather dust.

3 things you should consider when buying a Discman

If you want to buy a Discman so you can enjoy your old CD collection, it's a good idea to make a few considerations so you get the right Discman home.

We provide you with a few examples of considerations so you are better equipped to make the right choice of Discman.

#1 - What types of CDs should your Discman be able to play?

There are several different types of CDs, and it can be important to know which type of CDs and files your Discman should be able to play.

If your Discman cannot play a specific file type, it may mean that you cannot play that specific type of CD.

A regular CD is a CD that has been produced professionally with exactly the content it should have.

It is often this type of CDs that you find when you buy a music album or an audiobook in stores, and it means that you cannot make changes to the CD yourself.

If you want to make your own music collections, you often use a type of blank CDs that have no existing content on them, which are either of the type CD-R or CD-RW.

CD-R stands for CD Recordable, and allows you to transfer music files to the CD via a CD burner.

With CD-R, you can only transfer the file once, after which that CD cannot be changed anymore, so it's important to carefully consider which files you want to have transferred as you only get one chance to get it right.

CD-RW stands for CD Rewritable and works very similarly to the CD-R type, except that you have the option to change the content here.

The difference is that with a CD-RW, you have the ability to transfer files to the CD again and again.

This gives you more flexibility to create your own CDs and means that you won't waste a CD if you make a mistake during the CD burning process.

With these two types of CDs, you can create your own music albums of mixed artists that you can take with you on vacation or just carry around in your daily life.

Types of CDs

  • CD
  • CD-R
  • CD-RW
  • CD-MP3

If you want CDs with many songs on them, it may be that your Discman needs to be able to play CD-MP3.

They can contain many more songs than other types of CDs since the MP3 file type does not take up as much space as an audio file used for regular CDs.

Therefore, you can get a much greater selection of songs, music, and audiobooks transferred to the CD, so you don’t need to change CDs nearly as often in your Discman.

The downside is, however, that the sound quality of MP3 files is worse than audio files since MP3 files are much more compressed, which deteriorates sound quality.

It can therefore be important to investigate which file types you want to play in your Discman so you can get one that fits you.

#2 - Which type of Discman is right for you?

There are several different types of Discman on the market, so it may be a good idea to consider which type best suits your needs.

The most common Discman can play your CDs through the accompanying headphones, allowing you to enjoy the music while you're out and about.

They are very compact and can fit in small bags or can be clipped to your belt.

Most Discman have the option to use batteries, but there are also models that can be recharged via a regular power outlet.

You can therefore be sure to have the opportunity to listen to your music while you're moving around in daily life, whether it’s while you’re exercising or just going for a long walk.

There are also Discman models that have built-in speakers, so you can hear the music even if you don’t have headphones connected.

This can be an advantage if you want to share your music collection with friends and family while you are on vacation or on a trip to the beach to relax.

With a Discman, you get many options for taking your classic music collection with you, so you get much more enjoyment out of it in the long run.

#3 - Extra features for your Discman

It may also be that you want a Discman with a range of extra features that can enhance your enjoyment of the music over time.

Many modern models of Discman have a built-in anti-shock feature that helps keep the music flowing while you move.

Older Discman models had difficulty playing the music while you were, for example, running and your Discman would jump up and down during movements.

This caused the laser reading the CD and the CD itself to become slightly displaced, which disrupted the reading process and caused the music to skip.

Anti-shock features minimize this problem, so you can still use your Discman while doing light exercise.

You can also find Discman with a resume feature, where you can start a music file from where you left off last.

This is a very common feature for those of us used to digital players, but a CD player usually has to start from specific points, e.g., between songs or chapters in an audiobook.

The resume feature can therefore make it easier for you to listen to audiobooks on your Discman, as you do not have to restart the chapter over and over again if you don't get through it completely.
