Fiber Cable - Safe and fast data transfer
Here on the site you will find our large selection of fiber cables in various variants, types, and lengths.
Fiber cables are a type of network cable, with new technology that makes them incredibly efficient.
Fiber cables are cables that transmit data as light pulses through flexible fibers made of glass or plastic; they have gradually become a very popular choice for ethernet and antenna cables, thanks to their fast data transfers over longer distances.
Fiber cables typically consist of five elements, namely:
The Core
In the center of a fiber cable is a thin glass tube, referred to as the core, that transports light; this light is generated by a laser or by LED.
Singlemode cores typically measure around 8.3 or 9µm (micrometers), while multimode cores can be found in 50 and 62.5µm diameters.
The Cladding
A thin layer of glass surrounds and thus protects the fiber core.
At the same time, the light is reflected back into the core, resulting in light waves traveling up through the fiber.
The Primary Layer
The middle layer is made of a thicker plastic, also known as the primary buffer.
The reason it is also called the primary layer and buffer is due to the fact that it is designed to absorb shocks and impacts, prevent extreme bending and twisting, and at the same time reinforce the fiber core.
The Reinforcing Layer
From gel-filled pockets to Kevlar threads, the reinforcing layer is designed to protect the fiber core against severe pulls and strains, as well as against being crushed.
This is especially applicable during installation.
The Cable Jacket
The outer layer is called the cable jacket, and it provides the fiber cable with a final layer of protection and reinforcement.
The jacket is typically color-coded to help you better identify the type of fiber in the cable.
Yellow is typically used for single mode, orange for multimode, and similar.
3 Things to Consider When Looking at Fiber Cables
Fiber cables can be difficult to look at, as the market is so large.
You can find a large selection of different cable types, performance characteristics, and specific installation requirements.
However, there are certain factors you can base your decisions on, such as:
- Cable Jacket
All indoor fiber cables must comply with local safety regulations regarding fire.
If your cable is going to run through riser or plenum spaces, you should ensure that the cable jacket is approved by the fire department.
Apart from safety regulations and certifications, other cable jacket elements such as flexibility and strength under strain should also be considered.
- Connector
The fiber cable connections are typically dictated by the ports on your network equipment; if your 10G Ethernet switch has multi-fiber MTP ports, you will need to use cables with the required number of fibers.
When you, possibly based on these factors, have managed to narrow down your options, you should also consider both price and future-proofing.
There are, however, many things you need to know and consider before looking at fiber cables, and it can be quite challenging to navigate.
Below, you can find three points to start with, and then figure out exactly what you should look for when examining fiber cables.
#1 - How Fiber Cables Work
Light pulses down through the cable's core by reflecting itself against the sides of the cable; except for the light source, no form of operating power is required to send a signal.
Light will continue to travel for many miles before it needs to be regenerated; however, it is important to know that the size of the core is crucial when it comes to assessing how far a signal will travel.
Generally, smaller cores often allow the light to travel further before it needs to be regenerated.
Single Mode Fiber (SMF) has a smaller core, which keeps the light narrow and allows it to travel up to 100 km.
Multimode Fiber (MMF) has a larger core, which carries more data but is also more prone to signal issues over longer distances.
Therefore, MMF is often better suited for private homes where you have better possibilities for short-distance networking and associated cables.
The actual range of the signal is heavily dependent on the type of cable, wavelength, and the network itself.
Typical range is around 300 meters for a multimode cable, and up to 40 kilometers for singlemode cable.
If you need more range, repeaters will often be a sensible investment, so you can strengthen and increase your signal's strength and range.
#2 - The Different Types of Fiber Cables
First and foremost, fiber cables typically come in two different “modes,” namely multimode and singlemode; mode refers to whether it is one or multiple light beams being transmitted through the cable.
Multimode fiber cables (MMF) most often come in two different core sizes:
50µm and 62.5µm.
The relatively wide core can carry multiple different types of data simultaneously, as it uses something called VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser), or LED, as its light source.
Multimode fiber cables are generally used to carry a high amount of data over shorter distances, due to the high attenuation and dispersion rate.
Multimode fiber cables are categorized as either 50/125 or 62.5/125, referring to the diameter of the core and cladding.
Singlemode fiber cables typically have a significantly smaller core, usually around 8.3µm or 9µm, and typically a single light beam can travel further.
Singlemode fiber cables use a laser diode to operate in the 1310 and 1550 nanometer ranges.
This type of cable is typically used for longer spans, such as cable TV, campus data networks, and telecommunications networks.
Simplex vs Duplex
In addition to Multimode and Singlemode, there are also Simplex and Duplex.
A Simplex cable uses a single strand of fiber with a transmitter (TX) on one side and a receiver (RX) on the other side.
The cable does not go both ways, hence only sends in one direction.
This type of cable is mainly used in monitoring tasks, where a sensor sends data back to the central system in real-time.
Full-Duplex cables have two fibers that both send and receive data simultaneously, and function more or less like two Simplex cables that work synchronously to handle two-way data transmission.
The two twin connectors at both ends can send and receive simultaneously, whereas Half-Duplex cables can facilitate two-way communication, but not simultaneously.
Duplex cables are mainly used to connect network devices in a high-speed network, such as storage devices, servers, and similar.
#3 - Network Speed and Distance
Multimode fiber cables are typically what is used by larger businesses and data centers, as it is often the cheaper option and you also get more data sent at once.
Thanks to the continuous innovation in technology, the price difference is often insignificant, and thus there is typically more focus on the actual range of the signal and the speed of the network, and what you personally will need.
To move a large amount of data over a short distance, you will often get more out of MMF cables, whereas if longer distances and speed are necessary, SMF cables will often be the better alternative.
