Floor Cleaners - The way to shiny floors
Here on this page, you will find a selection of floor cleaners that can help you achieve shiny clean floors.
If you have hard floors made of wood, tiles, linoleum, or other materials, a floor cleaner can make the cleaning process a bit easier when it comes to floor washing.
The machine does the work for you, without you needing to have your hands in dirty water, wring out cloths or bend down into uncomfortable positions.
So regardless of whether you have a large or small home, are young or old, floor cleaners can be the way to shiny floors.
7 things you should know when looking for a new floor cleaner
There are many types of floor cleaners on the market, and they have different features, qualities, and price ranges. Therefore, we have compiled some things you can look for when finding your new floor cleaner.
#1 - Battery or cord
The first thing you should think about is whether you want a floor cleaner with a cord or if it should be cordless, i.e., operate on battery.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both battery and cord; with a cord, for instance, you are ready to wash floors as soon as the plug is plugged into the outlet, and it doesn't matter if you used the machine 5 minutes ago or last week.
However, you are also limited in range and may need to move the plug several times depending on the layout of your home to reach all areas.
With a cordless floor cleaner, you aren't limited by a cord but can move freely around the house, although a battery-powered floor cleaner can run out of power and needs to be recharged, which can be annoying if you just need one more room.
If you choose a corded floor cleaner, it can be beneficial to pay attention to the length of the cord; the longer the cord, the greater freedom of movement.
If you prefer a cordless model, look at the charging time of the battery and how long a charge allows you to wash your floors, as well as how the battery needs to be charged; for example, do you just place the floor cleaner in a dock, or do you need to remove the battery and place it in a charger?
There are many different cord lengths and batteries, so there is likely to be a machine that suits your needs.
#2 - Water capacity
Another thing to look for is the water capacity of the floor cleaner, as it can be annoying to run back and forth between the faucet and the floor cleaner to fill and empty.
Most floor cleaners have a 2-tank system, which means there are two tanks on the floor cleaner: one for clean water and one for dirty water.
This means the floor cleaner ensures that the washing part is supplied with water while also sucking up excess and dirty water into a separate container.
However, it is worth considering that the two containers also add weight to the floor cleaner when you need to handle both dirty and clean water.
Therefore, it might be advantageous to consider the water capacity in the floor cleaner, so you do not have to handle the weight of water for 120 square meters if your house is only 60 square meters.
#3 - Working area
The working area is usually specified in user manuals and product descriptions and tells you whether the machine is designed for large areas or smaller ones.
Here you should remember that if you have carpets in some parts of your house, these should obviously not be included in the area size.
The working area also indicates how much floor you can clean on, for example, one charge of the battery or within the cord's range, but the water tank's capacity also counts in the calculation of the working area.
#4 - Steam mop, floor cleaner or vacuum cleaner?
There are several types of floor cleaners and the floor cleaner is often confused with the electric steam mop.
There are two differences between these two types: all steam mops are electric, but not all floor cleaners have a steam function.
The steam mop uses hot steam to dissolve dirt, which is then collected in the attached mop.
This type is particularly suitable for slightly smaller areas that are not too dirty, as you would need to change the mop quite often because of the dirt.
The floor cleaner is suitable for larger areas where the floors are a bit dirtier and uses water and often also rotating rollers, which actively loosen dirt from the floor.
The floor cleaner often also has the function that it can both vacuum and wash in one go, while the steam mop can only wash.
The vacuum cleaner in this context is often designed for both wet and dry vacuuming and often works as a 3 in 1 machine.
Often it can be used on both carpets and hard floors and can vacuum, wash, and dry the floor.
#5 - Roller count and width
Most floor cleaners utilize some rotating rollers that actively clean the floor.
These rollers affect the maneuverability of the floor cleaner and how easy the machine is to steer into corners and edges.
Some machines have a single wide roller that covers a wide area of floor but can also be a bit tricky to cover uneven surfaces or even small level differences in the floor compared to several narrower rollers.
The narrower rollers cover a smaller area of floor each and are better at handling unevenness; they are also easier to steer into corners and crevices.
Often the width of the floor cleaner, mop, and vacuum cleaner is indicative of how easy it is to get the machine into corners.
#6 - Weight
If you need to clean all the floors in your home with your new floor cleaner, it is beneficial to consider the weight and ergonomics of the floor cleaner.
A heavy floor cleaner is not just heavy to move from room to room; the weight can also affect the strain on your body when you are maneuvering it on the floor.
Even if there is only a difference of 100-300 grams, it can significantly affect how heavy the machine feels to use.
The weight can also affect the pressure the machine has on the floor, so if you have a soft wooden floor or parquet floor where scratches and marks can easily occur, choose a lighter machine, possibly with a lower roller speed.
You can also look for machines with an ergonomic design in the handle so that the handle has a natural shape regarding maneuvering the machine.
#7 - Maintenance
Like most other machines in the home, a floor cleaner, steam mop, or vacuum cleaner is not entirely maintenance-free.
However, maintenance is limited to cleaning of rollers, mops, and water containers, and of course, charging the battery if the machine has such.
Most mops and rollers can go in the washing machine or can easily be washed by hand, and to get the best results, this should be done regularly, if not after each use.
The water tank for dirty water does not need to be cleaned with detergent every time you use the machine, but you should rinse it to remove dirt before putting the machine back in the cupboard.
The water tank for clean water should be emptied of any remnants to avoid algae and limescale buildup.
Additionally, you can benefit from thoroughly drying the machine with a wrung cloth once in a while, so you avoid having to wash the floor with a dirty machine.
