GPS Navigation - Find your way with GPS for car or bicycle

When you travel around by car or bicycle, it can be difficult to find your way, especially if you are in an unfamiliar city or area where you have not been before.

Here it can be useful to have a GPS navigation that you can connect to the car, as you will always be sure to have an updated map of the area you are in.

A GPS Navigation helps you find your way around and can save you both time and money, as it significantly reduces the chance of getting lost.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is a satellite-based system, where your GPS device is connected to a satellite network that orbits the Earth, so the GPS always knows exactly where it is located.

This also means that you are not bound to having a wireless internet connection to find your way around, as the GPS system does not use the same connection at all.

Therefore, a GPS navigation can be more reliable than if you use your smartphone to find your way, as you need an internet connection for the navigation to work optimally with a smartphone.

5 Things to Consider When Buying a GPS Navigation

If you want to be sure to find your way around when you are in a new area, it can be a good idea to make some considerations about which GPS navigation you should use.

Below we give you a couple of examples of considerations you can make, so you have a better overview of what you should think about when you need to buy a GPS navigation.

#1 - Where will you mount the GPS Navigation?

The first thing you should consider when you are going to buy a GPS is where you would like to have it mounted, as depending on whether you are going to use it in a car or on a bicycle, there are different types of GPS devices you should consider.

A GPS for the car will generally be quite larger with a big screen and built-in touch functions, making it easier for you to access the GPS while driving.

This also means that it will be easier for you to see the screen while you drive, as it will often be some distance away from you and may be difficult to see the details.

Since you have more space to work with in a car, this allows the GPS to be larger and thus have many extra features, compared to other smaller GPS devices for bicycles.

A GPS for the bicycle will generally be quite smaller and compact, as they need to be mounted on the bicycle handlebars, and they must not be too heavy.

This can lead to poor balance while cycling if the GPS were too heavy, and therefore they do not weigh much.

Bicycle GPSs also often do not have the same functions that a GPS for a car would have, as they need to be as compact as possible.

#2 - The Size of the GPS Navigation

If you need a GPS for your car, it can be a good idea to consider how large it should be, as otherwise it can be difficult to mount it properly in the car.

Depending on which car model you have, it may be difficult to find an appropriate place to mount the GPS, as not all have a large and flat dashboard where you can mount it.

So you may need to consider whether you should have a smaller GPS, as that would make you more confident that there is space in the car for it.

Examples of sizes of GPS screens:

  • 5 inches
  • 6 inches
  • 6.95 inches

The GPS should preferably be mounted somewhere where you can both see it and reach it, so you do not have to lean too far forward if you need to turn it off while driving.

If you have a larger and more modern car, there is often plenty of space on the dashboard or direct holders for a GPS, and you will likely have fewer problems getting it mounted.

So you may want a GPS with a larger screen, as it can help you better see which way you should go, ensuring you are less likely to get lost.

Therefore, it can be a good idea to consider what size your GPS should have, so you are more confident in being able to see the screen optimally, and also that it fits your car and is easy to mount.

#3 - Bluetooth Connection for Your GPS Navigation

Many modern GPS models also give you the option to connect your smartphone with the GPS, so you can drive more easily without having to take your hands off the wheel.

This allows you to use the GPS as a hands-free system in the car, enabling you to make and receive calls while driving.

This allows you to simply speak to the GPS, so you do not have to hold your smartphone to your face to have a conversation with the person on the other end.

A GPS with Bluetooth functionality makes it both easier and safer for you to talk on the phone while driving, as you must not speak on the phone in the car in the usual way while you are driving.

#4 - GPS Navigation with Extra Features for the Car

Many GPS navigations have a lot of extra features that you can use to make your driving a little easier.

With a GPS for cars, you can get models that can show you live information, so you are constantly updated regarding traffic and road work.

This allows you to know if you will be delayed or if you should avoid the specific roads where traffic and road work are in full swing.

Live information can quickly help you save both time and money, so you do not end up stuck in traffic and waste fuel by idling.

If you are going on vacation, you may want a GPS that shows you points of interest in your area as you drive through.

This can be great if you are going on a road trip with family and you are passing through unfamiliar areas where you may not have explored what attractions you can find.

#5 - GPS Navigation with Extra Features for the Bicycle

You can also get GPS navigation with extra features for your bicycle, so you have a better experience while you are out on a ride.

A bicycle GPS is not only useful for showing you the way, but you can also use it to set specific routes that you prefer or to enter routes for professional cycling.

Here you can, for example, enter a route you would like to follow, and the GPS will then measure the distance, elevation differences, etc., and give you a difficulty rating, so you can be better prepared for what challenges you will face on your ride.

Additionally, the GPS can provide you guidance on fluid intake and training balance, so you can prepare for your ride with the right amount of fluids, etc.
