Harddisk Dock - Quick access to your files

Here on the page, you will find our selection of Harddisk Docks, which not only ensures you quick access to your files but also makes it easy to connect and disconnect your external hard drive.

Even though there are many services today that let you store your files in the cloud, you might prefer, like many others, to have your files on a hard drive.

With a large selection of both internal and external hard drives at relatively low prices, it's a way to store files that makes it easy to quickly find and edit your files without having to download them first.

For many people, there is a security in not having the files stored in an unfathomable place, which can just be accessed by anyone and where there is no certainty of how many people have access.

For even though cloud services are generally quite secure, it is nice just to be able to unplug the hard drive and store it away, but often you just can't seem to unplug the device because you have to disconnect cables and ensure that the disk is properly disconnected from the computer, and it is complicated.

With a Harddisk Dock, this is made significantly easier, and at the same time, the hard disk dock can ensure proper air circulation around your external hard drive.

6 things you should consider when looking for a Harddisk Dock

There are countless models to choose from when looking for a hard disk Dock for your external hard drive, and it can be difficult to figure out what to look for to find the right one.

Therefore, we have gathered some information below that can help you find the right hard disk dock for your needs.

#1 - Number of slots on Harddisk Dock

The first thing you should consider when looking for a hard disk dock is the number of slots, i.e., how many hard drives you want to have room for in the dock.

Even if you currently only have a single external hard drive, it can be worth considering a bit ahead, since there is not a significant price difference between a hard disk dock that fits one and one that fits two hard drives.

You might as well consider whether you might need an extra hard drive at a later date and if you may need a hard disk dock that fits two hard drives.

Hard disk docks can be found with room for up to 8 hard drives, so there are many options to accommodate the number you need.

If you only need a single slot for a single hard drive, you can easily choose to buy a hard disk dock that only fits one hard drive.

#2 - Harddisk dock size

Another thing that can be a good idea to consider is the physical size of your new hard disk dock.

Some models are indeed larger than others, and it's not just the number of slots that matters for the size.

A hard disk dock should ideally help you free up some space on your desk compared to when an external hard drive is simply lying on the desk.

The advantage of a hard disk dock is that the hard drive is stored vertically, taking up less space on the desk.

But if the size of the dock means that it takes up as much space as when the hard drive is lying flat on the table, then it will most likely just become an annoying element on the table.

Consider choosing a dock that not only looks good but also provides you with practical storage and desk space.

Often, it doesn't matter to the functionality of the hard disk dock if it's big or small, so you don't need to worry about the performance of the dock in relation to its size.

#3 - Transfer speed for Harddisk Dock

A very important parameter when choosing a hard disk dock, whether you choose a large or small one, with one slot or several, is the transfer speed of the dock.

The transfer speed of the hard disk dock indicates how quickly data can be transferred from the dock to your computer and back.

This speed is measured in GBps, i.e., GigaBytes per Second, and you should not choose a hard disk dock where this speed is below 5 Gbps.

At the same time, you should be aware that some manufacturers report the speed in Gigabits per second, and the abbreviation is often the same, although bits are represented by a small b and bytes are represented by a capital B, so it’s not always that a small b represents bits.

A Byte corresponds to about 8 bits, meaning that 5 GBps corresponds to about 40 Gbps, so it is advisable to ensure which unit the speed is reported in.

You should also be aware that there can be differences between write speed and read speed, as it requires more to write than to read on the disk, so it is completely normal for there to be some difference here.

All in all, you should look for a hard disk dock with a transfer speed of at least 5 GBps or more.

#4 - Compatibility for Harddisk Dock

When you have to choose a hard disk dock for your external hard drive, it is important to know what type your hard drive is.

Not all hard disk docks are compatible with all hard drives, and here the main distinction is between SSD and HDD, and there are also distinctions between different types of interfaces, such as SATA, PCIe, and NVMe.

Therefore, you can check your hard drive's specifications for the type it is and which interface it uses, and then ensure that your new hard disk dock supports this.

Most hard disk docks support several types of hard drives, but there are specific models that only support either SATA or PCIe.

#5 - Harddisk Dock Design

Even though the performance and functionality of your new dock are probably the most important to you, your new hard disk dock will often sit on your desk, and it just looks a bit cooler if it has a nice design.

The design can vary from a square block where the hard drive is visibly seen to a round unit with a lid, which is closed and most of all looks like a speaker, and everything in between.

One of the things that can be practical when it comes to the design is if your new dock actually ensures some air circulation around your hard drive.

Air circulation around the hard drive can help keep the hard drive cooler, thereby ensuring better performance.

This is difficult to achieve with a closed hard disk dock, but reasonably easy with an open dock.

Hard disk docks come in various colors and designs, but the most popular are often black units with a simple design.

#6 - Cloning function for Harddisk Dock

Some hard disk docks offer an offline cloning feature, which can be very practical if you need to take a quick backup of your hard drive.

An offline cloning means that your docking station does not need to be connected to a computer to clone your hard drive to another hard drive, this can be done with a simple press of a button on the dock, and then your hard drive gets cloned to another hard drive in the dock.

This offline cloning, however, requires that there is space for at least 2 hard drives in your hard disk dock; if you only have a single slot, you cannot perform an offline cloning but can take a backup of your computer when the dock is connected.
