What is a Laminating Machine exactly?
A laminating machine, also called a laminator, is a fantastic tool for making your documents more durable by creating a kind of shield around them using plastic.
By using smart plastic pockets, as well as the laminating machine itself, you can therefore encase your paper documents in a layer of durable plastic so you don't have to worry about spilled coffee or other forms of accidents or damage.
Many use laminating machines especially for informational postings, which often need to hang for a long time.
With a layer of plastic, you ensure that your paper documents can hang for nearly infinite time, as the material is really robust.
Laminating machines are used both in office environments and in private homes.
Many enjoy the benefits of laminating machines at home as they are also fantastic for protecting one of your favorite recipes, other important paper documents, or pictures.
Due to the robust material, you don’t have to worry about spilling on your recipe while cooking, you can simply wash it afterward.
How does a laminator work?
A laminating machine/laminator transforms your normal documents, photos, or other items into a more robust version of itself.
This is done by using some special laminating pockets, and then inserting these into the laminating machine.
You can do this with paper documents in both A3 and A4 sizes.
There are two types of laminating, which are typically called “hot laminating” and “cold laminating”.
Hot Laminating
The laminating method that most people are probably familiar with is called hot laminating.
When using this method, the aforementioned laminating pockets are used along with a significant amount of heat, which seals the pocket around your document.
The pocket itself is not connected to the machine in this method but is simply passed through.
When you use a hot laminator, the following method for laminating should be used:
- Take your document and place it in a laminating pocket
- Turn on the laminator/laminating machine and let it heat up
- Once the machine is ready, place the pocket/document in the machine’s opening
- Thereafter, the machine will pull your document through and heat the laminating pocket, sealing your document
The hot laminating machines are suitable for general use and can easily create a protective layer for your paper documents, pictures, business cards, etc.
Cold Laminating
For the slightly more sensitive documents, another form of laminating has been created, known as cold laminating.
Here, instead of heat, a certain amount of weight is used to press the plastic layers together around your document.
Just like the hot method, you should place your sensitive document in a laminating pocket and then pass it through the machine.
Here, the machine uses a “rolling function” that ensures the two layers of plastic are pressed tightly together so they keep your document sealed.
The cold form of laminating can be beneficial for items that cannot tolerate heat, such as various photos or ink documents.
General tips when using a laminating machine
Using a laminating machine is fortunately not rocket science.
The laminating machines we use today are more or less automatic, which ensures that your laminating work turns out perfectly almost every time.
In the old days, it was not uncommon for one to have to manually control the heat on their laminating machine, which created problems as it was not always easy to find the perfect temperature.
The machines we have today are much better at finding the right temperature, and most do it automatically with preset functions.
Here are some good tips for using a laminating machine:
- When laminating, it's often a good idea to insert the closed part of the laminating pocket into your laminating machine first, as this ensures the best laminating and reduces the risk of your document getting stuck in the machine.
- Be careful that your document is not pulled too quickly or too slowly through the machine, as this can result in a flawed laminating job.
- If you are using hot laminating, ensure that the temperature is not too high or too low. If it is too high, there may be heat bubbles in the plastic or even damage to the document itself. If the temperature is too low, the seal will not hold, meaning you have to start over with your laminating work.
Laminating machine for both A4 and A3 documents
Here on the page, you will find a practical and cheap laminating machine that is available for both A3 and A4 sizes.
This allows you to laminate a full A4 sheet or a larger poster as long as it is A3 size or smaller.
Remember that laminating machines for A3 documents are larger and require more space than the smaller models that can only handle A4 size.
Most laminators only handle standard documents, but if you have large laminating tasks, a combination laminating machine that can handle both A3 and A4 is the safe choice.
Use a paper cutting machine to cut the papers precisely to the laminating pockets.
