Cat 7a network cables - Give your internet connection a boost

There can be many questions when you are faced with the decision to invest in a network cable, and it can therefore be nice to have a little guide to help you make the right choice.

How far does the network cable need to be? What transfer speed is best for you?

Fortunately, you will find 6 considerations here on the page that you should think about when you choose a Cat 7a network cable that just meets your requirements and your daily life.

7 Things to Consider When Buying a Cat 7a Network Cable

Now you have finally decided that you want to acquire a Cat 7a network cable, and suddenly there can also be differences in what the various network cables can offer you.

Cat 7a network cables have the advantage of ensuring you a fast internet connection.

But what exactly should you consider when you are about to invest in a Cat 7a network cable, and what is good to know about this type of network cable?

#1 - Length of the network cable

Cat 7a network cables are available in different lengths, and depending on how far the cable needs to be run, it is a good idea to consider which length it should have.

If you live in an apartment of 50 square meters, and therefore the network cable does not need to be run so far, you might be able to settle for one of the shorter cables.

On the other hand, if you live in a large country estate where the network cable needs to be run over longer distances, you will probably need to invest in a long cable.

You may want to ask a professional for help if you are unsure about how long your network cable should be to ensure a stable internet connection throughout your home.

Below, you will get an overview of the lengths of Cat 7a network cables available here on the page.

  • 50 m
  • 100 m
  • 250 m
  • 500 m

#2 - Data transfer speed

Another thing you need to consider when choosing a Cat 7a network cable is the data transfer speed and whether it is compatible with your broadband choice.

Transfer speed is measured in Gigabits per second.

If you find that a Cat 7a network cable has a transfer speed of up to 10 Gbit, that is the theoretical maximum speed, and therefore you cannot expect to automatically get a transfer speed of 10 Gbit when buying a Cat 7a network cable.

Your transfer speed depends on which internet provider you have and what transfer speed the internet provider offers through your subscription.

How high a transfer speed you need depends on how much you are on the internet, for example, and what you need to upload or download in your daily life.

For instance, if you are in the situation where you act as a YouTuber in your free time and need to upload data-heavy videos to your YouTube channel, you should aim for a high transfer speed.

If your only purpose for going online is to occasionally check your bank, your advance or annual tax statement, or e-Boks, the transfer speed might not be that important.

#3 - Advantages of a solid network cable

When you browse Cat 7a network cables on this page, you will notice that there is a reference to a type of cable called “solid.” But what does it actually mean for a cable to be “solid”?

The term “solid” refers to the way your Cat 7a network cable is made.

Solid Cat 7a network cables are made with a core located in the center of the cable.

The advantage of a solid Cat 7a network cable is that it can be used for wall installations mounted in wall boxes and as a regular network cable with terminating RJ45 connectors.

Network cables of the “flexible” type can only be used as network cables with terminating RJ45, and solid network cables therefore have many more installation options than “flexible.”

If you want as many installation and placement options for the network cable as possible, you should choose a Cat 7a network cable of the “solid” type and not “flexible.”

#4 - Advantages of S-FTP and LSZH

You will find that our Cat 7a network cables are defined as S-FTP and LSZH.

S-FTP means that a Cat 7a network cable is shielded so that external interference cannot damage the cable, which is advantageous as it strengthens the physical integrity of the network cable.

LSZH stands for “Low Smoke Zero Halogen” and ensures that the cable has low smoke development if it unfortunately comes into contact with fire.

Furthermore, when buying a Cat 7a network cable equipped with LSZH, you are protected against the release of harmful toxins during a fire because the cable's outer sheath is halogen-free.

Most Cat 7a network cables are PiMF (pair in metal foil) cables, meaning that the conductors of the cables are twisted together in pairs.

If a network cable is both PiMF and S-FTP, the individual pairs are all wrapped in foil, which helps prevent interference from other cables.

Cat 7a network cables with S-FTP are specifically shielded against noise from 230 V power (EMC noise).

#5 - Buy a cable with a reel

If you are looking to buy a Cat 7a network cable that is not for your private home but rather for an event, it is a good idea to invest in a network cable with an accompanying reel.

This way, you can more easily manage and move the network cable during the event.

The main reason a network cable with an accompanying reel is a good idea is that such events can quickly create a need for LAN connections across areas.

If you struggle to set up a LAN connection at an event, it is absolutely easier for you if you can avoid tangling the cables, which you can do with an accompanying reel.

The reel is made of metal and rubber, where the metal gives the reel stability so that it cannot tip over, and the rubber is placed on the handles to ensure you have a solid grip.

#6 - Colors of the network cable

When you are about to choose a Cat 7a network cable, color choice is probably not the first thing that comes to mind because you think it has nothing to do with the selection process.

But it is actually quite significant that you consider what color the cable should have.

Imagine needing to reach into the wall and rummage through your Cat 7a network cable among a multitude of cables and wires. Wouldn't it be practical if the color of your cable stood out?

By choosing a color that stands out from the crowd, you are ensuring that you can always find your network cable - even if you need to look for it among many cables.

If you are investing in network cables on behalf of the company you work for, it is also important to be aware that some companies require specific colors for their network cables.

Among the Cat 7a network cables on this page, there are two colors you can choose from.

  • Blue
  • Orange

#7 - Cat7 cable with PoE

If you want a network cable that can transfer both data and power, you should choose to invest in a Cat 7a network cable that supports PoE (power over ethernet).

When investing in a Cat 7a network cable that supports PoE, it is important to check if the input socket that the network cable will be plugged into is compatible with PoE.

Finally, you must not connect a PoE compatible network connector directly to your computer, as it may cause your computer to overheat, which in the worst case could completely destroy it.
