Good scissors are rarely something you think about replacing.

Scissors can be found in almost every home, and are a must-have in almost every drawer, whether it be kitchen drawers or office desk drawers, or otherwise.

Good scissors can often cut through all sorts of different materials and similar, everything from meat and bone to thick cardboard and fabric.

Scissors can often replace a knife in many tasks, and often give you a better grip, and thus better control, than what many knives can.

The scissors are therefore, in many cases, often an indispensable piece of tools.

6 things to consider when buying scissors

If your current scissors either suffer from weak or dull blades, or small handles, you should buy a new pair.

When looking at new scissors, there are several things you should keep an eye on, such as your new scissors should of course be well constructed and balanced, as well as have comfortable handles, so you can easily use your scissors for longer periods if necessary.

If you also want to take good care of your new scissors as much as possible, it will often be of great benefit if you store them with your knives in a knife block, or ensure that you protect the blades with fabric.

If you use your scissors for something that requires them to be cleaned, it will often also be beneficial to wash them by hand, regardless of whether they are dishwasher safe or not.

It actually helps to prolong the life of the scissors, and you will thus enjoy your scissors for a longer time.

#1 - Sharpness

Scissors, and especially kitchen scissors, are designed to cut, so therefore sharpness and a sharp edge is one of the first things you should consider when looking for new scissors.

Some scissors are razor sharp when you first buy them, and can cut through tougher things such as bones and thick fabric, but lose their sharp edge over time.

To ensure that you have the best possible experience, you should consider what materials your scissors are made of. 

Some scissors also have a serrated edge, which helps the blades to maintain sharpness and therefore often have a firmer grip on the material you cut through.

#2 - Grip

There are rarely people who want to end up cutting incorrectly or in themselves, neither while preparing food nor wrapping gifts, or anything else you are in the process of cutting.

A pair of scissors that slips in your grip or on whatever you are cutting can often go very wrong, and therefore you should look for two specific safety measures:

• Latex, rubber, or textured plastic on the handles, so you have a good solid grip.
• Serrated blade to ensure that the blade does not slip when cutting through the material.

Many scissors today also come with ergonomic grips, so you can use your scissors for longer periods, or use them even if you may be mobility impaired, without having to fear soreness afterwards.

#3 - Easy to clean

Scissors, especially kitchen scissors, should be easy to clean, as it is unpredictable what specifically you are using them for.

Often, you may find yourself in a situation where residues of whatever you have cut, such as glue, meat juice, or other things, stick to the blades, and therefore your scissors should be able to be thoroughly cleaned.

Many scissors also come with the feature that the blades can be separated, making it easier to clean them, whether by hand or in the dishwasher.

You can often find scissors, most often kitchen scissors with extra features, such as bottle openers and nutcrackers, and it can often be essential to have those extra features available.

The serrated piece on your blade has many clever purposes, and simply the fact that it helps you get a firmer grip on whatever you are cutting is incredibly useful.

However, you can often also use this piece to grip stubborn lids and easily open them.

Plucking herbs

Having to pick and peel herbs for cooking can often be tedious work, and not everyone feels they have the time or desire to stand and fiddle with it.

However, you can easily find scissors that are equipped with one or two small holes between the blades, which helps to easily tear the leaves from the stems, so you can quickly pick the herbs and get back to cooking.
