Toaster - the easy solution for toasted bread

A toaster is a device that many of us already own.

The toaster is a faithful companion in the kitchen, as it allows you to easily and quickly make your old dry bread more delicious.

A toaster does precisely what you think it does; it browns/toasts bread so that it becomes deliciously warm and crispy.

It does this with the help of electricity and a series of heating elements that are typically located at the bottom or along the sides of the toaster.

Consider these 11 things before you buy a toaster

There are incredibly many different models of toasters, and therefore it can be overwhelming to choose.

Below you can read about a long range of different specifications and features that toasters can contain.

In this way, it will be a little easier for you to choose, as we quickly guide you through the various functions, so you can see if it is something for you.

#1 - Size of your toaster - how many slices fit?

The first thing you should consider is whether you want a normal or a slightly larger toaster.

The most common toaster often fits 2 slices of bread, or up to 4 slices if it is a flat version.

However, there are toasters that can hold even more slices.

The larger models of toasters are particularly suitable for bigger families, where it can take a very long time to make enough bread for everyone with a normal/small toaster.

In our selection, you will find both toasters for 2 or 4 slices.

#2 - Color, design, and material

Toasters come in countless different designs and colors, each providing a completely unique expression in your kitchen.

A toaster is often a device that stands out on the kitchen counter, so it’s nice to have one that you actually think looks good.

In our selection, you will find many different designs, both modern designs in stainless steel, or some beautiful retro models in pastel colors.

You can find toasters in many different colors in our selection, including colors such as:

  • Black
  • Pink
  • Blue
  • Stainless steel
  • Green
  • Beige
  • Red
  • White
  • Bronze

Of course, the color choice does not affect the actual performance of your toaster, but is simply a way to make the choice more personal, so it fits your décor.

#3 - Pop-up toaster

The classic toaster that many of us know and own is a so-called pop-up toaster.

This type of toaster is set to a specific temperature and time, and after this is reached, it “pops” the bread up out of the machine.

This type of toaster is often the quick solution, as it heats both sides of the bread simultaneously.

#4 - Flat toaster

A flat toaster can, unlike a pop-up toaster, only heat the bread on one side at a time.

Where a flat toaster is advantageous is that it typically has space for at least 4 pieces of bread at a time, while a pop-up version typically only has room for 2.

This means that you can have 4 slices of bread ready at the same time, which for some families or workplaces is a big advantage.

#5 - Bread rack in a toaster - that's why it's smart

Some pop-up toasters come with a small extra feature called a “bread rack”.

This is an extra addition that can be attached to the top of the toaster, which allows you to warm bread without toasting it.

You can use the bread rack to warm many different types of bread, such as:

  • Rolls
  • Burger buns
  • Hot dog buns
  • Pita bread
  • Buns
  • Etc.

#6 - Toaster with timer

Some toasters have only one setting, where you start the machine and it stops after a standard setting.

However, this can be a bit frustrating if you prefer your bread in a certain way.

A toaster with a timer allows you to set the time yourself, so you get exactly the type of toasted bread that you prefer.

#7 - Toaster with defrosting

If you have frozen bread that you would like to prepare, selected toasters can handle this.

Some toasters are indeed able to handle defrosting, for example frozen toast or other types of bread.

It is important for a toaster to be able to handle defrosting; not all can do this.

If the toaster does not mention that it has a defrosting function, it is important that you do not use it for this, as it can damage it.

#8 - Toaster for reheating

A toaster can easily reheat old bread that has already been prepared once before.

If it is toasted bread that you may have forgotten and want to get warm again, you can easily do this.

You just need to remember to set the toaster correctly so that the bread does not burn.

You can also use a toaster with a bread rack, as this solution completely spares the bread from being toasted.

#9 - Toaster with automatic shut-off function

If you are the type who often forgets to keep an eye on your kitchen appliances, then this type of toaster is advantageous for you.

With the automatic shut-off function, your toaster ensures that you don’t burn your bread.

It will automatically turn off once the bread is done, or when the timer you have set is finished.

This gives you the opportunity to do all sorts of other things while your bread is being prepared, making it quicker for you to get ready in the morning.

#10 - How many heat levels does the toaster have?

Toasters are very different when it comes to heat settings.

Some have only one single setting, where the only thing you can do is adjust the time level.

Other toasters have settings that change the actual temperature, so you can toast bread quickly or slowly depending on your needs.

If you for example want to toast a very thick piece of bread, it is an advantage to be able to heat at a lower temperature so that the outside does not get burnt.

On the other hand, if you want to toast thin slices, it is an advantage to use a high temperature, as this will handle the task very quickly.

Our toasters come in all models, both those with a single setting and other models with up to 7 different temperature settings.

#11 - Toaster with automatic centering

The high/closed toasters surround your bread completely and heat from all sides.

Therefore, it is important that the bread is as centered as possible to achieve evenly distributed cooking.

Some toasters do this better than others, with a smart “automatic centering” function.

This function typically consists of some metal holders that center the bread precisely in the middle of each chamber.

This way, the bread receives exactly the same heat on both sides, so you can get perfectly toasted bread every time.

Cleaning the toaster

A toaster makes the bread very dry, and it typically creates a larger amount of crumbs over time.

Therefore, it is important to keep your toaster clean regularly, so it can function optimally without various crumbs blocking the heat.

Toaster with removable grill

Some toasters, typically the flat versions, have a grill that you can loosen and completely remove.

This makes it easy and simple to clean it, as you can just take it off and gather all the crumbs together and throw them out.

Some grills can also be washed in the dishwasher, or by hand, if they have become dirty during cooking.

Toaster with crumb tray

For the more closed/high models of toasters, it can be a bit more cumbersome to clean them.

Therefore, many of this type of toaster often have a crumb tray.

The crumb tray is located at the bottom of the unit and can be easily pulled out, and will have collected most crumbs in it.

Then you can easily empty the contents of the tray in the trash and put it back in the toaster again.

This solution is however not completely thorough, as there may still be hidden crumbs inside the machine that may require a bit more work to get out.

At avXperten, we have countless smart toasters, as well as other smart devices for your kitchen such as cheese machines, wine coolers, tea machines or brewing kettles.
