DAB+ radio - the radio of the future with traditional values

Development in electronics and digital technology is occurring at an ever-increasing pace. This is evident, among other things, in the developments related to TVs, computers, tablets, and mobile phones.

The development in radio technology is also experiencing significant advances in recent years. In the past, it was only possible to listen to radio via the FM band, which could deliver radio signals to stationary radios or the more portable transistor radios that many had – and still have – standing in the kitchen or on the dining table.

DAB radio is here to stay

Today, the solution is called DAB radio when it comes to listening to music or news in everyday life. DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting – and as the name suggests, it involves the transmission of digital technology as opposed to the well-known FM band (Frequency Modulation), which transmits analog signals.

Advantages of DAB over FM

One of the major advantages of using digital DAB signals is that they do not take up as much space in the ether as the old FM signals. This creates room for more signals – and thus more programs – within the limited space allocated for this purpose.

FM vs DAB - DAB is best in test

Another significant advantage is that with DAB technology it is possible to reduce the unwanted interference caused by different channels affecting one another. This allows for a cleaner sound, where the signals are not distorted by channels that are closely spaced on the FM band.

DAB Radio signals contain more information

Additionally, the DAB signal can contain more information. If you have tried listening to digital radio via a computer, tablet, or mobile phone, you have likely noticed that you receive information about time and other details related to the artist and titles of the music played on your device.

If you have a DAB radio with a display, you can get the same information through this display and keep up with the transmitted information, which has not been an option before.

FM signals will cease in the future

The phasing out of FM radio has begun, so it is advisable to be proactive and switch now.

Even if the FM signal is shut down, you can still listen to all your favorite channels, e.g., those from Danmarks Radio.

The difference between DAB and DAB+

Various media have mentioned that it is not enough to have a DAB radio. Instead, one should have a DAB+ radio – and there is a sound explanation for that. To make room for more channels and information, it has been necessary to revise the DAB system. This new system is called DAB+ and has given Danish radio listeners even more channels to listen to.

DAB closed and DAB+ opened

The extensive media coverage is due to the fact that as of October 1, 2017, the DAB signal exclusively operates on DAB+, and old DAB radios can no longer receive all channels. To take advantage of all the benefits of DAB+, you should get your DAB+ radio to perform an automatic tuning of all channels. This is done in the same way as when your radio was first set up. Refer to the user manual for instructions on how to perform a new tuning.

If you have an old DAB radio, you can easily find out whether your radio can receive DAB+ signals. If you can receive, for example, Danmarks Radio's regional programs, your DAB radio is already equipped with DAB+.

Only very few cannot receive DAB+

All DAB radios produced after the year 2012 are designed to receive DAB+ signals.

DAB+ will replace FM in 2019

It has been politically decided to completely shut down the FM signal when at least 50% of the Danish population receives radio via digital signals. All indications suggest this will happen in 2019 in Denmark – and it is also the trend we see in the rest of Europe. Our neighbors in Norway have already switched off FM signals in several areas.

In 2010, about 10% of people received radio signals via DAB. This figure had risen to approximately 31% in 2016. All radio and TV retailers have been mandated to inform customers that the FM signal will disappear within a few years. The same applies to car dealers, as all cars are also equipped with radios.

You can listen to DAB+ in your old car via AUX connection and a DAB+ antenna

If the number of listeners using DAB+ combines with an ever-increasing group listening to digital radio via computer, tablet, and mobile phone, the total percentage will quickly become significant.

DAB+ radios – a huge selection of different models

DAB+ radios are available in many different models and price ranges, so there are plenty of opportunities to find the model that suits your needs – both in terms of price and the features you want to have available.

Most models can receive both the new DAB+ channels and the traditional FM signals. This gives you the opportunity to store the programs you listen to the most – and easily switch between different channels regardless of whether you want to listen to DAB+ or FM.

DAB+ radio with power and batteries

Many models can be connected to regular 220V power and powered by batteries. This is a very practical detail if you want a flexible radio that can be taken anywhere – for example, on the balcony, patio, or in the garden – or if you simply want to use it in multiple locations in your home.

DAB+ radios with more options

If you sometimes want to listen to the radio without disturbing those around you, many DAB+ radios come with a mini jack connector, so you can connect headphones just like you do with stationary radios or your mobile phone.

You can also find DAB+ radios with Bluetooth connectivity. This allows you to use the DAB+ radio as a receiver and, via Bluetooth transfer from your computer, tablet, or mobile phone, play your favorite music from a downloaded playlist.

Also available with memory cards

Finally, there are also models that have the option of inserting memory cards. This makes it easy to play the music you have downloaded onto the card. Just insert the memory card and listen to your favorite music while enjoying coffee at the kitchen table or on the patio.

Find the DAB+ radio that meets your needs – and be assured of easy and hassle-free radio listening in the future.

Want to know more about DAB?

If you want to know more about DAB radios, you can visit Wikipedia and read more. You can click here: https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Audio_Broadcasting - Here you can among other things read that DAB+ has been under heavy criticism.

The ideal radio

The DAB+ radio is known to be the latest technology in the world of radio and most Danes today have a radio that can receive the digital DAB+ signal. Just like with broadband networks, interference on the line is avoided by upgrading to a digital signal. This gives you, as a radio user, crystal-clear sound and thus a better radio experience.

For what is more irritating than hearing your favorite song played on the radio, or listening to a specific radio program that is totally crackling? Nothing. The radio signal must function optimally so you can listen to music, news, or anything else you want, without any problems.

At the same time, the upgrade to the digital signal means that you can listen to several different channels. The DAB+ radio is thus ideal for you, who love to listen to the radio and appreciate really good sound. There is no doubt that the DAB+ radio is here to stay. Everyone deserves good music and good sound, and therefore every home should have a DAB+ radio.

Goodbye to FM radio – what about your old radio?

The farewell to the FM signal means that with the final and complete shutdown of the FM band, it will be necessary to have a radio with a digital receiver. By that time, only the digital signal will remain as a service air radio signal. As it is known, most DAB radios sold since 2012 are equipped with the right receiver, but if your radio is older, it can no longer receive the digital signal.

If you are about to get a new radio anyway, invest in a DAB+ radio to be completely sure of getting the best possible sound experience as well as the opportunity to listen to all kinds of exciting radio channels. But if you were happy with your old radio, do not despair, because there is a way to make it work again. Although the FM signal is shutting down, this does not mean that all FM radios become obsolete. There are plenty of options. It just requires an adapter that can easily and quickly give your old FM radio new life via the AUX connection.

Find the right DAB+ radio here with us

On the DAB radio market, you will find numerous radios. There are so many to choose from that it can be difficult to figure out which radio perfectly suits your needs. When you choose your new DAB+ radio, it is exactly your needs that should determine your choice. Consider, among other things, where your radio should be placed, how big it should be, what the sound should be like, and what design will fit into your home.

For example, should the radio be placed in the bedroom, where you sometimes might need to check the time at night or set your alarm clock? Then you might want to look for a DAB+ radio with a function as a clock radio, with a digital display. Most DAB+ radios today have a digital display that can show the time, but that is of course not true for all.

You can also find DAB+ radios that can play via Bluetooth if you want to use the radio as a speaker while you are grilling in the garden, enjoying life at the beach, or if you simply want to play music at home via Bluetooth on your smartphone. Today, there are countless exciting music services such as Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, and many more. The many options for finding good music via your smartphone and a DAB+ radio with Bluetooth make it possible for you to play exactly the music you want with crystal-clear sound quality.

Choose the right design

In terms of design, you will find a long range of different-looking DAB+ radios here with us. They are known to come both with and without battery operation, which is another factor you should consider before you acquire a DAB+ radio. Should it be placed stationary in one spot in the home?
