The difference between a food processor and a blender
A food processor and a blender are very similar to each other. Both in terms of appearance, but also functionality. There are just small differences that separate the two kitchen tools.
The biggest difference between a food processor and a blender is how the two kitchen tools work with the ingredients.
A blender is especially good for dishes where liquid is added to the dish. The blender works best with a more liquid consistency, such as smoothies, milkshakes, or soups.
Without a bit of liquid, the blender’s blades will struggle to blend all the ingredients, and it will be difficult to get a completely smooth mixture.
A food processor, in contrast to a blender, works best with dry and hard ingredients, such as nuts, carrots, and other hard vegetables.
Another difference is the number of extra parts included with each machine. Typically, you get more parts with the food processor than with the blender.
Therefore, the food processor is more versatile than the blender, as it is not only more powerful but can also perform more tasks than the blender, thanks to the many different parts.
A food processor is so powerful that it can also be used as a mixer for making various doughs, for example, pie crusts or pancakes.
These kitchen tools can a food processor replace
- Mini chopper
- Mixer
- Blender
- Hand mixer
- Mandoline/Grater
Why you should have a food processor in the kitchen
If you enjoy cooking at home in the kitchen, a food processor is a must-have. It is a kitchen tool that can make your cooking much easier and even better.
A powerful food processor has many functions that can help chop, grate, and slice various ingredients in a short amount of time.
Here’s what you can make with the food processor
- Ground meat
- Butter
- Peanut butter
- Dough
- Grated cheese
7 things to consider before you buy a food processor
Before you go out and invest your money in a food processor, it is important to find out what you will use it for.
The food processor is, as described, one of the most versatile kitchen tools that can really elevate your cooking skills to new heights.
A food processor can quickly cost a lot of money if you do not specifically know what you will use it for.
Therefore, you can easily save money by considering the points below so you find the food processor that best fits your needs.
#1 Size
The food processor takes up quite a bit of space with the accompanying parts. Therefore, it is a good idea to consider whether you actually have room for it in the kitchen.
If you live, for example, in an apartment and do not have much cupboard space, you may need to look at a blender, mini chopper, or a hand blender instead.
A food processor is also generally larger and taller than normal blenders. This is partly due to the large base and high filling tube.
With a larger and heavier base, it also ensures that the food processor does not slip while you are using it.
Some food processors even have suction cup feet to ensure that it does not slide back and forth when you run it at full speed.
#2 Cleaning the food processor
After using a food processor, it can leave a lot that needs to be cleaned. However, this can be done quickly if the parts are dishwasher-safe.
Most parts of our food processors are dishwasher-safe, so they can be easily cleaned with a quick run in the dishwasher.
We recommend hand-washing the blades, as they can wear out if washed in the dishwasher.
If washing the blades by hand, be careful not to cut yourself on the blades. The blades are quite sharp when they are relatively new.
#3 Size of the filling tube
The size of the filling tube determines how much you can throw into the container at one time. With a larger filling tube, you also have the option of putting in larger items.
However, we always recommend cutting the ingredients into smaller pieces before putting them into the container.
This makes the food processor's job much easier. It also prevents overheating because the motor has to exert extra effort on the larger pieces.
It also helps the food processor to blend the ingredients more evenly, resulting in a finer consistency.
Most filling tubes are round, but they can also be found in a wider shape, allowing you to, for example, slice a cucumber lengthwise to get longer strips.
#4 Extra parts for food processor
One of the reasons the food processor is so functional is because of all the parts that come with it.
Before investing in a food processor, it’s a good idea to compare it with other food processors to see which parts you get.
There are many different parts that can be useful depending on your needs. Therefore, there may be some parts in another food processor that suit you better.
Often, you can buy extra parts directly from the manufacturer's website. This way, you can also add the parts you need.
These parts typically come included:
- Grating disc
- Blades
- Citrus juicer
- Slicing disc
- Peeling knives
#5 Capacity of the container
A food processor often comes with two different containers. A pitcher-shaped one and a mixing bowl.
The capacity determines how much content you can have in them. If you put too much content in the container, the motor will struggle to operate.
The pitcher can hold between 1.8 L - 2 L, which is usually enough to make several cocktails, smoothies, and soups for several people.
If you are not using the food processor to serve larger portions, you can easily use the mixing bowl, which often can hold at least 1.5 L and is perfect for smaller tasks.
#6 The wattage of the food processor
The wattage of the food processor also reflects how powerful it is. The more watts it uses, the more powerful it is as well.
To be able to handle the following:
- Dough
- Hard nuts
- Hard cheese blocks
It requires a motor with a consumption of 400 - 700 W to handle the task without problems.
All food processors over 1000 W are considered large food processors. They can easily handle larger ingredients in a short time without overheating.
Overheating is a problem that can occur if you force the food processor to work for extended periods or try to blend something that it is not designed for.
This can damage the internal parts of the motor, as well as damage the food processor itself and its parts, such as the blades or the container itself.
At avXperten, we have several different food processors that use between 600 W - 1500 W.
#7 Quiet Food Processor
A food processor is one of the kitchen tools that makes the most noise in the kitchen. Therefore, it can be annoying to have the food processor running for extended periods.
The noise level is measured in decibels (dB), which is the unit used to measure sound levels.
You can often find the food processor’s dB in either the product description or on the manufacturer’s website.
Food processors generally have a higher noise level as the motor is slightly more powerful than other kitchen tools.
If the noise level is low on a food processor, manufacturers are usually quite good at highlighting it.
Often the number of watts and the noise level are linked, as generally the more watts a food processor has, the higher the noise level.
