12 Hand Mixer Specifications and Features

When you need to choose your new hand mixer, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the specifications and features that the hand mixer offers so you get the perfect hand mixer for you.

See the most important hand mixer features below to get a better idea of which features you can benefit from.

#1 Speeds

Hand mixers typically have several different options for speed settings.

The number of speeds that different hand mixers have varies greatly, but it is often somewhere between 3 and 7 speeds.

#2 Dough hooks

An accessory that often comes with an electric hand mixer is dough hooks, which can be attached to the hand mixer just like you can with beaters.

The dough hooks are used to mix the dough well so that the dough is kneaded into a cohesive dough by the dough hooks.

#3 Design

In terms of design, it is usually quite simple in black, white, or gray plastic, and otherwise typically in brushed steel.

However, you can also find them in colors and some with a more retro look, but there may be a bit longer between them.

#4 Turbo function

The Turbo Function is also a speed function, but it is often activated in a somewhat different way than the other speed settings.

This function is the fastest speed that the hand mixer can offer as an additional help for when it needs to go really fast.

In some cases, you need to press a button or hold a button down to activate the function.

#5 Hand Mixer as a Stirring Machine

For some hand mixers, there is a bowl and a stand included, so you can actually use the hand mixer as a stirring machine.

You can place the hand mixer on the stand, so you don't have to hold it, and can instead let the mixer stir the dough by itself.

However, you should be aware that the hand mixer will never be as effective and powerful as a stirring machine.

#6 SoftStart function

When you first start on a dough, you may have a lot of liquid or loose ingredients in the bowl, which can easily spill over when you first start the hand mixer.

To help with that issue, some hand mixers have a SoftStart function, so the mixer gradually blends the ingredients together without them flying out in all directions and spilling out of the bowl.

#7 Cordless

The cord can quickly get in the way when you need to use a hand mixer, or you may also have trouble getting the cord to reach an outlet.

Fortunately, there are also cordless hand mixers, which instead work with a built-in rechargeable battery, so the cord doesn't get in your way.

#8 Release button

To easily detach beaters and dough hooks after use, there is mostly a release button on the hand mixer.

When you press the release button, the hand mixer releases the beaters or dough hooks, so you can easily get them off your hand mixer.

#9 Hand Mixer as an Immersion Blender

If you want to save some space in your kitchen, you can advantageously choose a hand mixer that can also function as an immersion blender and minichopper.

The way it works is that the hand mixer is a motor for the immersion blender and minichopper, and can be attached on top just like with a motor for an immersion blender.

So you simply swap out the whisk or dough hook with, for example, an immersion blender, and in that way, you have several different kitchen appliances in one single kitchen appliance.

If the hand mixer can function as an immersion blender, you will often be able to buy it as a set, with everything from beaters to dough hooks, measuring cups, minichopper and immersion blender.

Some hand mixers that function as immersion blenders also come with measuring cups that can be used with the immersion blender.

#10 Whisk with silicone

As extra accessories for some hand mixers, you can also get whisks with silicone protection.

The silicone is soft and thus more gentle on your bowls, where regular whisks can easily scratch and wear, especially if you have metal bowls.

However, the silicone whisk works best with softer doughs, like cake batter, as they cannot handle tough bread dough.

#11 Hand Mixer with Storage

For easy storage of accessories for your hand mixer, there are some hand mixers that come with a bag or container for things like beaters and dough hooks.

The container can also hold the actual hand mixer’s cord, as the hand mixer serves as a lid for the container.

This way, you have easier control over the cord and all your extra accessories, so you have everything gathered.

#12 Heater (HeatSoft)

Some of the more advanced hand mixers may be equipped with a type of heater or so-called HeatSoft function.

This function is useful for you who need to whip butter, which may still be hard, as the heater will soften the butter.

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Hand Mixer

It's a good idea to consider what your needs are for a hand mixer before you buy it.

#1 How much will you use the hand mixer?

If you intend to use your new hand mixer quite often, it might not be a bad idea to spend a little more money on it so you can get good quality that can better withstand heavy use.

If you need to use the hand mixer for long periods, it might also be beneficial for you to choose a more lightweight hand mixer so you don’t quickly get sore hands and arms.

You might also choose a hand mixer with a stand so you don’t have to hold the hand mixer yourself.

#2 What will you use the hand mixer for?

If you only need to whip a little whipped cream now and then, or you would also like to be able to use your hand mixer as an immersion blender or minichopper, then you should consider whether you need extra equipment.

If you'd like to use it as an immersion blender and minichopper, it’s a good idea to buy a set where everything is included.

This way, you ensure that the hand mixer supports the immersion blender and minichopper accessories.

If it should also function as a small stirring machine, then remember to check if a stand comes with the hand mixer so you can use it hands-free.

#3 What design should the hand mixer have?

Design is of course not at the top of most people's list of requirements for a hand mixer, but for some, it still matters that it fits into the kitchen's style.

In terms of hand mixer design, it is often quite simple in black, white, or gray plastic and typically in brushed steel.

However, you can also find them in colors and some with a more retro look, but there may be a bit longer between them.

#4 Do you have a dishwasher?

Make sure to check if your hand mixer parts can withstand being put in the dishwasher for the easiest possible cleaning.

However, you should never put the actual hand mixer motor in the dishwasher or in contact with water for that matter.

This can especially be an advantage with parts that can go in the dishwasher if you have measuring cups and a minichopper for your s.

#5 What functions do you need?

If you need to use special functions, such as the HeatSoft function that warms your ingredients slightly.

Or if you need many different speeds, for example, such as Soft Start, so your ingredients don’t fly out of the bowl when you start mixing your dough together. Also, see our selection of toasters, electric kettles, microwave ovens, and many other kitchen appliances.
