Lightning Adapter - Easy connection of Apple devices
Here on the page you will find our selection of Lightning adapters, which you can use to connect devices without a Lightning port to devices with a Lightning input.
Lightning adapters can provide highly effective connectivity options when you have an Apple device that you want to connect with a device from another brand.
The Lightning plug is typically used on Apple devices, which means that you will only very rarely be able to use this type of plug on devices from another brand.
However, with a Lightning adapter, you can connect your device to both mini-jack, HDMI, Micro-USB, and many other ports in other devices.
If you are in doubt about what to look for to find the right adapter for your purpose, read on below, where we have gathered some information that can help you in your quest for a Lightning adapter.
5 things you need to know when looking for a Lightning Adapter
There are many different models of Lightning adapters, both with and without cables, and it can be a bit of a jungle to navigate through, which is why we have gathered some information below that can help you in your quest for your new Lightning adapter.
#1 - Types of Lightning Adapters
There are many different types of Lightning adapters, and it is primarily the type of plug opposite the Lightning plug that determines which types are in question.
However, there are also 2 main types of adapters, one without a wire or cable, and one type with wire or cable.
The types without a wire or cable are typically plugged into one device, depending on the connector combination on the adapter, and the plug from the other device is then plugged into the adapter.
Here, the devices are very closely connected, as the adapter is basically just a type of plug and thus does not have a cable.
This type can be advantageous to use if you want to connect an external microphone to your Apple device, as the small adapter plugs into the lightning port and the cable from the microphone is then plugged into the adapter.
You will not experience as much signal loss here, as there is no extra wire that adds resistance to the signal.
When you use a Lightning adapter with a cable, you get a bit more flexibility in the adapter itself, and this can be a good solution if you do not have an extra cable lying around.
In addition, with an adapter with a cable, you often get to choose how long a cable you want your adapter to have; they are often available with cables up to 2 meters long, but it is recommended to select as short a cable as possible, as a shorter cable reduces power loss through the cable.
#2 - Lightning Adapter with multi-cable
For some Lightning adapters, they come with a so-called multi-cable, which means that the adapter can convert the plug into several different plug types.
Often, these models of Lightning adapters will have either a USB-A or USB-C at one end, and the wire from there is distributed to, for example, a Lightning, Micro-USB, and USB-C plug.
Such a Lightning adapter can be advantageous if you have many devices you switch between, and want to use your new Lightning adapter for all the devices.
However, you need to be aware that not all models, for example, allow you to use the adapter without it being connected to a USB-A port at one end, which means you will not be able to use the adapter in the aforementioned example to convert from Lightning to Micro-USB.
#3 - Plug combination for Lightning Adapter
When it comes to Lightning adapters, there will of course be a lightning plug at one end of the adapter.
Whether this Lightning plug is a female or male plug does not matter much, aside from the fact that you will usually need a male plug that you can plug into the output from your Apple device.
Additionally, there are Lightning adapters for most types of plugs, for example:
- Lightning to MiniJack 3.5
- Lightning to HDMI
- Lightning to Lightning
- Lightning to Micro-USB
- Lightning to USB-A
- Lightning to USB-C
- Lightning to VGA
- Lightning to SD card
You should be aware that not all adapters allow the signal to run both ways, but it can on most models, and you can often read about it in the specifications if the signal can only run one way through the adapter.
When you choose the plug combination for your new Lightning adapter, it is important that you pay attention to male and female plugs.
Specifically, this means that if you can use a plug that you can plug into another plug, you are looking for a male plug, and if you are looking for a plug that can receive another plug, you are looking for a female plug.
The gender of the plugs can vary from model to model, and it is therefore important to be aware of this so you do not get a Lightning adapter with a female plug when you should have used a male plug.
For example, if you need a Lightning adapter that allows you to connect your iPhone to the car's system via an AUX input, and you already have a mini-jack cable, then you should look for an adapter with a Lightning male to plug into your iPhone, and a MiniJack female to plug the mini-jack cable into.
#4 - Lightning Adapter for data and/or Audio
Some Lightning adapters can only transfer audio, also called audio, while others can transfer images, video, sound, and other data.
Therefore, it is important to consider whether your adapter also needs to be able to transfer data to other devices, such as images, videos, and files, for example when you need to synchronize your device with your computer.
Most models of Lightning adapters can transfer sound, but not all can transfer anything beyond this.
This may be because it is cheaper to produce cables for just a single function than for cables with multiple functions.
If your adapter also needs to be able to transfer data, it may also be interesting for you to look at the adapter's power and transfer speed for data transfer.
#5 - Where you can use a Lightning Adapter
With the many possible plug combinations for Lightning adapters, it will be rare to encounter a device that cannot be connected to your Lightning device.
On the other hand, you will often find situations where you will benefit from an adapter, for example when you need to connect headphones to your iPhone and you forgot the wireless ones at home, if you want to charge your iPhone while listening to music, or if you would like to play on your iPhone on the television via HDMI.
There are countless options with the many different Lightning adapters, but be aware that not all Apple devices now have a Lightning port.
Previously, almost all Apple devices had a Lightning port, but today it is being replaced by a USB-C port on more and more models.
The Lightning plug is not obsolete, but is increasingly used for iPhones now than for iPads and MacBooks, where the plugs have gradually become USB-C plugs.
