Slides and Negative Scanners – Convert negatives to digital image files
If you look through your belongings, you might come across something that is soon considered a rarity; old negatives and slides – also called transparency films.
If you are very young, you may have never taken pictures on "old-fashioned" film or slides. If you are a bit older, you probably have negatives or slides from your childhood or youth lying in a drawer.
These images can be brought back to life again – also here in the digital age via a slide and negative scanner.
A slide scanner makes it easy to convert old transparencies into digital files; here are the great advantages of a slide scanner:
- Easy conversion of 35 mm negatives, film, and slides
- Saved as JPG files on your PC or Mac via USB
- Full color scanning
- Automatic exposure
- Automatic color balance
- Charged with USB cable (the same as for transfer)
Almost all pictures today are taken as digital image files. They are taken either with a digital camera or with our new smart phones, and can immediately be viewed on a phone, computer screen, or displayed in larger form on our TV.
In the past, you would put a roll of film into a camera, after which you could take a certain number of pictures on that roll.
This was developed in several different solutions and became negatives. These negatives were "exposed" onto photographic paper, which was also subsequently developed in several solutions, before you were left with a finished picture.
If it was a slide (or transparency) film you put in the camera, it also had to be developed.
After this, you had a number of slides that could be viewed by putting them in a projector. This was equipped with a powerful bulb that "threw" the image onto a screen on the wall, where you could see the picture in large size.
All these measures were cumbersome and time-consuming – not to mention that they were also relatively expensive solutions.
If the memories hidden on the old negatives and slides are to be revived, we have several different slides and negative scanners that solve the problem easily and cheaply.
Slides to digital images - fast and simple
A slide scanner – doesn’t take up much space. It is a small “electronic device” that can scan the inserted negatives or slides and convert them to digital image files.
These are transferred via the included USB cable to your computer, after which you can immediately view them on the screen.
Some models can also scan the image files directly onto an SD memory card, so you don’t need to sit at the computer while you scan. Afterwards, you can transfer all pictures from the SD card to your hard drive.
You can also find models that are equipped with a screen where you can see the picture before you scan it – and some models can even use an included video cable to show the picture directly on your TV.
These are practical options if you are, for example, dealing with many negatives or slides and need to select which ones you want to scan as electronic image files.
The scanner comes with adapters that allow you to scan various film formats.
The most common were super 8 (film), 110 format, 126 format, and 135 format – and all of these can be scanned using the different adapters. This obviously also applies to the old black-and-white pictures.
When you are choosing a film scanner, you should also consider how many MP (MegaPixels) you want to scan with.
You probably know from your digital camera or phone camera that more MP offers a higher resolution and thus sharper and better images. The same principle applies when you scan negatives or slides.
You don’t need that many MP if you want to send the pictures to family or friends via email or possibly share them on Facebook, Twitter, or similar.
If you are the type who likes to work with your scanned images on your computer, a slide scanner with higher MP would be preferable.
Scanning negatives - the perfect backup of old images
In addition to the great advantage of being able to view the scanned images here and now via the computer or TV – and the possibility of sharing them with friends and family – scanning also has another advantage; you simultaneously create a “backup” of the old negatives and slides.
Negatives and slides are fragile. They cannot tolerate moisture, high heat, and similar conditions, which creates a high risk that they will be lost over time.
Once you have used the slide scanner and placed the images on an electronic medium, you have also secured them for the future.
If you are about to start scanning negatives or slides, you might want to warn your partner or family, as you will surely get caught up in it – and spend many enjoyable hours as the memories come forth from the depths – all while ensuring them on your hard drive.
You might consider buying a slide scanner with the option to connect to the TV and let the family participate when the pictures are to be selected. It can lead to unforgettable evenings for all of you.
Therefore, explore our selection of slides and negative scanners and find the model that meets your wishes and needs.
