Why you need a smoke alarm
Smoke alarms are a really good investment that can end up making the difference between life and death if a fire were to break out in your house, apartment, stairwell, or building. It is important to choose a proper and reliable smoke alarm.
Also remember to ensure that the smoke alarm works and that it has sufficient power.
How does a smoke alarm work?
A smoke alarm detects if there is smoke in your home. If there is, the alarm will emit a loud sound. The purpose of the sound is to warn you of the fire so that you and the other occupants of the home can get out in time or extinguish the fire.
Most fire-related deaths occur at night when you can succumb to smoke inhalation and be trapped before you even detect the fire. In such cases, the smoke alarm can save your life.
Advantages of smoke alarms
- It wakes you if a fire occurs in your home.
- You can get out if a fire breaks out.
- You can contact the fire department faster, giving them a greater chance of limiting the damage.
- You can sleep safely in your home.
- It can save your life.
Disadvantages of smoke alarms
- The only real disadvantage of a smoke alarm is that it can give you a false sense of security. This only applies if your alarm is not functioning properly. Therefore, you should always check that it is working, as well as that there is power in the batteries, at regular intervals.
Where should smoke alarms be placed?
When you need to install a new smoke alarm, it is far from unimportant where you place it. It is vital for both safety and the effectiveness of the alarm that it is positioned correctly. Below you can read our advice on where to place your smoke alarms.
- Make sure to place smoke alarms on the ceiling on all floors of your home. Ideally, there should never be more than 10 meters between two smoke alarms.
- Ensure that smoke alarms are placed near all bedrooms in the home. This ensures that you and your family will always be awakened by the smoke alarm, even at night.
- Make sure not to place smoke alarms within one meter of windows, ventilation fans, and doors. Why, you may ask? Because these things can blow smoke away, which would cause the smoke alarm not to activate when it is needed.
- Furthermore, you should also avoid placing smoke alarms in the kitchen, the bathroom, or near a fireplace or wood stove. This is because things like cooking fumes, steam, and smoke can unnecessarily trigger the alarm.
- If your home has a vaulted ceiling, loft, or similar, you should place the smoke alarm at the highest point. You should do this because smoke will rise and gather under the ceiling.
- If we are dealing with a stairwell, it should be placed at the top of the uppermost floor.
- If we are dealing with a very long hallway, a smoke alarm should be placed at each end of the hallway.
- Always remember to read the instructions from the supplier when installing it.
Regulations for smoke alarms
There are some few rules regarding smoke alarms that must be adhered to. It is a legal requirement to have a smoke alarm system connected to the power grid if the house or apartment was built after December 1, 2004. In this case, the system must be installed and set up by a licensed electrician.
As a general rule, it is the builder's responsibility to ensure that smoke alarms are installed in a dwelling. If you are building a new house, for example, you are the builder, and thus it is your own responsibility to have smoke alarms installed.
It may occur that the municipality requires you to install a smoke alarm system when you renovate or make an extension.
Don't forget to check your smoke alarm!
It is extremely important to regularly check your smoke alarm. The best thing to do is to make it a routine to check your smoke alarm, for example, the first Sunday of the month, so once a month.
If you are going on vacation or otherwise away from the house for a few days, it is a really good idea to check it both before and after the trip.
As a general rule, a smoke alarm connected to the power grid will be more reliable in operation compared to a battery-operated smoke alarm. This is simply because you do not have to change the battery as often.
Most smoke alarms are equipped with a test button, where the smoke alarm will start to sound when you press it. If it sounds when you press the test button, it is working. If it does not sound, something is wrong.
Start by replacing the batteries. Most of the time, this will simply be the problem. If changing the batteries does not resolve it, it is probably time for a replacement of the alarm.
Additional tips for the smoke alarm:
- Do not paint over a smoke alarm.
- A smoke alarm typically has a lifespan of 10 years.
- Vacuum your smoke alarm regularly. Dust and dirt can reduce the alarm's response time.
