4 things to consider when buying a dimmer
There are many things to consider when you are about to buy a new dimmer, as it can greatly affect your experiences with the product.
Therefore, we provide a range of considerations below, which you can make before you buy a dimmer, so you can be sure to get the right dimmer for your needs.
#1 - Where should the dimmer be placed?
It may be important for you to consider where you would like the dimmer to be placed, as it can influence which dimmer you should use.
The two most common dimmers, Touch and Slider Dimmers, are often placed in the relevant room where they will be able to dim the light.
It is best to place these types of dimmers close to the lamps you wish to dim, as it provides better possibilities for adjusting the light.
You can also get a panel dimmer that sits on your electrical panel, allowing you to dim the light from there.
This might be good if you don't need to dim the light very often and prefer to hide the dimmer a bit away from potential guests or children who play with the light.
#2 - Which type of dimmer is best for you?
There are several different types of dimmers on the market, each functioning in a different way.
Therefore, it might be a good idea to consider which type fits your needs best before making a purchase.
The first type you can find is a Touch dimmer, which has a nice touch display you can use to adjust the light.
This allows you to easily adjust the light on your lamps and bulbs, as you simply have to touch the display to make it respond.
The Touch dimmer works best with LED bulbs, as you don't need to install an additional transformer to be able to use the dimmer.
The second type of dimmer you can find on the market is a slider dimmer, which works by using a slider that you can adjust.
This type of dimmer requires that you install an additional transformer, as it works by adjusting the power supply to the lamps.
This makes it possible for the slider dimmer to use other types of bulbs than LED, as it adjusts the power supply and does not rely on the bulb's function to be adjusted.
This function is not available for standard incandescent or halogen bulbs, so these types of bulbs cannot be used if, for example, you are using a touch dimmer.
The third type of dimmer is a panel dimmer.
This type of dimmer is installed at the electrical panel itself, allowing you to adjust the light over a larger area than a touch or slider dimmer, which only adjusts the connected lights to the relevant switch.
Additionally, you won’t have an extra large switch that potentially takes up space on the wall in your home.
It may therefore be important for you to consider which type of dimmer suits you and your home best, so you can get the best experience out of it.
#3 - Do your bulbs have the capability to be dimmed?
It is important for you to investigate what type of bulbs you have in your lamps and whether it is possible to dim their brightness, as not all bulbs have that functionality.
If your bulbs are LED, then they have the possibility to be adjusted without requiring a more complex electrical installation to adjust the brightness.
If you have the more standard incandescent or halogen bulbs, then they do not have the ability to adjust the brightness without you installing an additional transformer for your switch.
It will therefore be a much easier installation in your home if you also use LED bulbs, as they come with that functionality included.
It is therefore a good idea to check what bulbs you have in your home and whether you need to purchase new ones, or if you need to buy an additional transformer, so you can adjust the brightness of your older bulbs.
#4 - Should the dimmer be used with a smart home system?
If you are going to invest in dimmers for your home anyway, it may also be a good idea to investigate whether a smart home system is suitable for you, as it can enhance your home experience.
LED lights already provide you with the possibility to use a dimmer without needing to add extra equipment, but by using smart LED bulbs or smart switches, you can enable direct control of your lights from your smartphone.
Additionally, you have the option to connect a smart home system, where you can set specific times during the day when you want the lights to dim.
This way, you can have the lights automatically dim in the evening, allowing you to save energy while potentially reducing strain on your eyes that can occur in bright light.
Advantages of using a dimmer
There are several benefits to using a dimmer in your home, which can be a good reason to invest in the system.
Firstly, it can help you save more energy if you use dimmers in your home.
This is because the bulbs do not need to use nearly as much power when they are dimmed compared to when they light at full power.
By dimming the light, you can potentially save up to 90% more energy and possibly save money on your electricity bill.
With a dimmer, you also gain much more control over your lighting, allowing you to adjust the brightness in your home according to your needs.
This way, you can reduce the strain on your eyes that bright light can cause and make it easier to fall asleep at night.
Additionally, you also ensure that your bulbs can last longer, as they do not need to be used as intensively as when they run at full brightness.
By dimming the light by just a quarter, you can save about a fifth on the electricity that the bulbs use and potentially extend the lifespan of the bulbs by several years, depending on the type of bulb you use.
